Wildlife Painting Basics: Deer, Antelope & Other Hooved Animals Review

Wildlife Painting Basics: Deer, Antelope and Other Hooved Animals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great book to use for anyone interested in wildlife painting, specifically hooved animals such as deer, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, zebras, etc. Obligatory information such as surfaces, grounds, brushes, acrylic paints and gathering reference material is provided. Each animal gets its own chapter and each chapter follows a standard format. First, anatomy and how to sketch the featured animal is shown, then mini-demonstrations that show close ups of key features such as the head, neck, eyes, legs, etc.
The format of each demonstration is clean and easy to follow. There are numerous reference photos of the various animals as well as photos of the painting process. The close-ups of painting things such as fur and antlers is particularly helpful. The final chapters show step-by-step demonstrations of the environment as well as the animals and the author supplies ideas for how to compose your own original paintings from reference material. I would like to mention that although the author uses acrylic these painting techniques work just as well for other types of opaque paints. Even though I use acrylic paints myself I plan to use these techniques for some wildlife paintings using casein as well. The only painting media I use that might need other techniques than those demonstrated here are watercolor and pastels. Overall, an excellent book for any beginning wildlife painters reference shelf.

Donkey Training Review

Donkey Training
Average Reviews:

I ordered this book the day after I bought my first donkey. I was really looking forward to learning about donkeys, since I had only had horses in the past.
I was very disappointed in the book when it arrived. I read it cover-to-cover and felt that I had just read another "horse training" book like any other. I thought to myself, "but wait, aren't donkeys different?"
I have now had my donkey for a year and a half, and the more I am with her the less I like this book. I find nothing in the book that celebrates donkeys for being donkeys, for their unique attributes that make them so different from horses (and often make them such a challenge!). To me, it appears Ms. Hodges spent all her time turning her donkey into a horse - would have been easier for her to just buy a horse.
This book was written by a very wealthy woman who found exactly the right donkey and taught it exactly the right things to be able to win a lot of show prizes and become very famous, and thus sell books and videos to the donkey crowd. In most of the pictures, Ms. Hodges does not seem to be even enjoying herself at all.
Basically, I find it a lot of hype with little substance, and of little use for the average back-yard donkey owner who wants to have fun with his/her longeared friend. ...

Boddington proves once again why he is the best general hunting writer alive today. In his usual style, he covers nearly all of the huntable species in North America, blending together information about the game, the method of hunting it, appropriate rifles, and his personal experiences hunting that species. Not only is it informative and useful as a reference work, it is simply enjoyable to read.

California Wildlife Viewing Guide (Wildlife Viewing Guides Series) Review

California Wildlife Viewing Guide (Wildlife Viewing Guides Series)

I love to go out into nature and view any type of wildlife, especially birds. My husband and I enjoy weekend driving trips in California where we live. The California Wildlife Viewing Guide has been a constant companion for us since we purchased it about two years ago. In fact, I purchased a second copy when I could not find my original copy and we were driving to the Central Valley of California. We wanted to view the migratory ducks and geese that come to that area each winter but needed to know where to go and how to get there. This book provides detailed information on wildlife viewing areas throughout the state with directions and maps and great pictures. It lists what can be seen at what times of the year and what to watch out for (eg. rattle snakes, heat, road conditions, etc.) I found out that the publisher, Falcon Press, publishes these same guides for most of the US states. These guides are apparently the official series of guides for The National Watchable Wildlife Program whose sponsers include Defenders of Wildlife, The USDA Forest Service, BLM, The US Fish and Wildlife Service, The Bureau of Reclamation and The National Park Service along with state sponsers depending on which state the guide is for. As an added plus, as you are driving along, there is often a sign with a binnocular that points to the wildlife viewing spot you are headed for, making it even easier to find the desired location. Wow! Now when I decide to go out of state, I make sure that I have the Wildlife Viewing Guide for that state. I just ordered four more books for a birding trip to Texas, passing through Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.

This book is a question and answer book. The entire book is full questions about the whitetail deer. Leonard usually has data to support his answers to the questions in his book. He also gives other people credit when he uses an answer that he learned from their studies. This is a great book for either beginners or experienced hunters. I have been hunting for 14 years and I learned a lot of things from this book.

Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal: A Swift, Effective Method for Permanently Shaping a Horse's Lifetime Behavior Review

Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal: A Swift, Effective Method for Permanently Shaping a Horse's Lifetime Behavior

I bought this book by Robert M. Miller with my very first
miniature horse foal, and it WORKS!!!!
I imprint trained him at birth and some the next day and
everything I did, helped that horse just like he said it would.
His personality is beautiful, he learned the desired responses
well and I know its because of the imprint training. It does not
take much time or effort on your part. I bought a foal that was
not imprint trained and the difference between the two horses
later on is UNBELIEVEABLE. The imprint trained horse is
friendly, obedient, and unafraid of anything ,thanks to this
book. TO me it was well worth the money I paid for it.I expect
2 more foals this year and already have my book ready to
do everything he suggests, I know it will make my life easier
when that little foal becomes a weanling thru full-grown.
For me, it was especially helpful because of my inexperience
with horses but this book would work just as well with the
experienced. It does shape the horses behaviors for LIFE.

IMPRINT TRAINING OF THE NEWBORN FOAL offers an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach to handling and training newborn foals, as well as numerous techniques and exercises that aid the foal in halter training and later in performing riding maneuvers. Imprinting can be defined as a learning process occurring soon after birth in which a behavior pattern is established. The newborn foal is imprinted to follow and bond with whatever large object looms above it at the time of birth.Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them. The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.

Women and the Law of Property in Early America (Studies in Legal History) Review

Women and the Law of Property in Early America (Studies in Legal History)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book to learn what records might exist for a divorce and dower in connection with genealogy research. It is extremely thorough and detailed for the several states Salmon researched. It was very enlightening about the legal status of women, especially how their situations varied state to state. Some readers may find the book a rough go--the law can be a very dry subject. As an attorney myself, I appreciated the hair splitting differences she presented. I found even the notes and extensive bibliography useful for locating other materials to read.

In this first comprehensive study of women's property rights in early America, Marylynn Salmon discusses the effect of formal rules of law on women's lives.By focusing on such areas such as conveyancing, contracts, divorce, separate estates, and widows' provisions, Salmon presents a full picture of women's legal rights from 1750 to 1830.
Salmon shows that the law assumes women would remain dependent and subservient after marriage. She documents the legal rights of women prior to the Revolution and traces a gradual but steady extension of the ability of wives to own and control property during the decades following the Revolution. The forces of change in colonial and early national law were various, but Salmon believes ideological considerations were just as important as economic ones.
Women did not all fare equally under the law.In this illuminating survey of the jurisdictions of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina, Salmon shows regional variations in the law that affected women's autonomous control over property. She demonstrates the importance of understanding the effects of formal law on women' s lives in order to analyze the wider social context of women's experience.

The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815 (Studies in North American Indian History) Review

The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815 (Studies in North American Indian History)
Average Reviews:

Anyone who has attended an academic history conference in the last five or so years already realizes the impact that this densely-written, but provocatively argued book by an historian of the American west has had on the study of American history. For both good and ill, White's central thesis -- that Indians and Europeans in the Great Lakes region created together and sustained an elaborate system of cultural and political contact that endured for centuries based not on mutual understandings, but mutual MISunderstandings, often deliberate ones -- has come to set the tone for the most recent studies of cultural encounter and creolization in the New World. Indeed, White's "middle ground" bids fair to assume the blanket hegemony exercised over the American historical imagination a decade or more back by the idea of "republicanism." And, not without cause: White's book is in many respects a stupendous achievement -- exhaustively researched, laser-subtle analyses, and ambitious in scope. What weakens the book is White's tendency to often assert the existence of a so-called cultural "middle ground" between Indians and others in advance of the evidence he presents. The "middle ground" is too often presented as a given, one that can act as the explanation, rather than as the hypothetical that it actually is, the actual subject that should be under investigation. This said, the influence of this book will be felt for years to come.

This book seeks to step outside the simple stories of Indian/white relations--stories of conquest and assimilation and stories of cultural persistence. It is, instead, about a search for accommodation and common meaning. It tells how Europeans and Indians met, regarding each other as alien, as virtually nonhuman, and how between 1650 and 1815 they constructed a common, mutually comprehensible world in the region around the Great Lakes that the French called the "Pays d'en haut". Here the older worlds of the Algonquins and various Europeans overlapped, and their mixture created new systems of meaning and of exchange. Finally, the book tells of the breakdown of accommodation and common meanings and the recreation of the Indians as alien and exotic. The process of accommodation described in this book takes place in a middle ground, a place in between cultures and peoples, and in between empires and non-state villages. On the middle ground people try to persuade others who are different than themselvesby appealing to what they perceive to be the values and practices of those others. From the creative misunderstandings that result, there arise shared meanings and new practices.

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Wiley Trading) Review

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Wiley Trading)

I don't even know Mr. Bulkowski, but I felt compelled to write this review. One particular reviewer points out a few apparent discrepancies in this 672 page volume of research. It does not matter whether you are an author or have been published in trading-related magazines.
The reviewer sarcastically poses that since the "rectangle bottom" stats on page 659 portray a zero faulure rate, that traders can get rich and never lose money!
If you truly read the entire text, including Mr. Bulkowski's opening remarks that define his fresh statistical-analysis approach, then everything falls into place.
Furthermore, the author addresses the "zero loss stat" for the rectangle formation on pages 440 and 444. He states that the "sample size" was small for this pattern and said: "Let me emphasize that because I did not find any failures of rectangle patterns with upside breakouts does not mean there are none."
This is a good and comprehensive book with a very fresh statistical approach for analyzing classic (and newer) bar chart formations. There is a wealth of information addressing each of the many patterns. It is offered up to the reader as copious amounts of quantified data that any trader/investor can draw from to incorporate into his or her own trading.
I too am an author, and I trade stocks full-time for a living. This book is a great resource and fits in the top 15 T.A. books of which I own roughly 300.
Yeah, he called a "dogi" a "hanging man." To me that doesn't detract from the other 671 pages.
Buy it, read it and use it!

Bulkowski tells you how to trade the significant events -- such as quarterly earnings announcements, retail sales, stock upgrades and downgrades -- that shape today?s trading and uses statistics to back up his approach. "The most complete reference to chart patterns available. It goes where no one has gone before. Bulkowski gives hard data on how good and bad the patterns are. Managing a Hedge Fund: A Complete Guide to Trading, Business Strategies, Risk Management, and Regulations Review

Managing a Hedge Fund: A Complete Guide to Trading, Business Strategies, Risk Management, and Regulations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am afraid I have to agree with the review here of Robert Altena wholeheartedly. This book simply describes the very basics of several investment strategies (most of which have existed for decades). Hedge funds have long ago moved beyond any of these strategies, although the obviously still employ all of them as a bulk of their operations, and they constantly move into uncharted territory. That is what is separating the top funds from the `pretenders' nowadays.
If these strategies are new to you and/or if you actually learned anything new from this book then you have NO business trying to start a hedge fund. Of course if you need to buy a book to consider doing so, then you are really in trouble anyways. This book is useful however for anyone that is considering putting their money with [reputable] hedge fund managers and therefore need to educate themselves on various basic strategies the funds may employ (thus why I gave it 2 stars instead of 0 or 1).
I think Mr. Black is an excellent professor and his writing in this book is pretty good, but the title is very misleading. A more accurate title may have been: The Basic Hedge Fund Strategy for Investors. For those who already work at buy-side institutions (or serious prop traders at bulge bracket firms), if you plan to branch out on your own please do not think ANY book will aid you in your quest. Instead, if you need insight into risk management, quant, partnership accounting, etc. in order to complete your education BEFORE starting a fund (recommended that you do!), then consider reviewing published industry papers from Wharton, MIT, Cal Tech, Chicago B.S., HBS, NYU, etc. (I would put particular concentration on the top finance and tech schools and not the top management schools - MIT, Wharton, NYU, etc.) These offer the best academic insight into how funds should be managed, in theory anyhow, in truly technical jargon. If you can't understand the jargon, then stick with working with your broker or day trading because starting a hedge fund will only put you into bankruptcy.

I have a yearly garage sale. I am a librarian. Therefore, I've read or skimmed many, many books on the subject. I found myself ordering this one again and again from other libraries. Then, I realized it was out of print. Panic! What if the other libraries decided the condition was so bad they had to get rid of it. So, I bought a used copy through Amazon. It's a great manual for having a garage sale, but what makes it invaluable is the price guide. When I have no idea what to price something (like the things I have to ask my husband what they are?), I look here for guidelines. In my opinion, it is the best garage sale book around.

Contemporary Barbie Dolls: 1980 And Beyond

I don't collect Barbie dolls -- I collect books on Barbie dolls. And Jane Sarasohn-Kahn's books are my all-time favorites.
"Contemporary Barbie" showcases Mattel dolls from the eighties to the present, in more-or-less chronological order. Thoroughly researched and beautifully photographed, this is the best book on the topic of Barbie dolls. "Contemporary Barbie" is more of an artistic exploration of Barbies than a collectors guide, but this edition contains new, revised information about the dolls issued and their market values. I keep this lovely book on the table, and even non-Barbie-lovers can't resist picking it up and thumbing through it.
"Contemporary Barbie" may disappoint some because it only covers dolls made in and after 1980. But the last twenty years has been a rich period in Barbie history, done justice only by this fabulous book.

Add 2 stars if you don't care that the formulas are in Metastock shorthand, NOT in straightforward mathematical terms. I'm a programmer, looking for a book with the straight formulas for technical indicators. Here's what it says on the book, as quoted by amazon: "Simple, intuitive, easy-to-understand, and precisely defined formulas". Sounds great, so I buy it. NOWHERE does it mention that these formulas are in Metastock shorthand, which is NOT decipherable without Metastock, so I returned it. The book is very good at explaining the use of these indicators, but I'm very disappointed in the misleading marketing of the publishers and amazon.

Mel Thompson's book Philosophy is one of the best books on the subject I have read. He approaches the matter in a writing style that is way far from the pompous, rigid, holier-than-thou method some writers use. His writing is lucid, captivating, fun and educational (two words which are rarely found together)...He discusses concisely yet sufficiently and thoroughly about philosophic concepts and highlights the most important parts of each concept and elucidates them masterfully. This book will appeal to anyone from the member of the philosophical clerisy to the ordinary layperson. A truly interesting read.

An accessible introduction to the central questions in Western philosophy and how the major philosophers have explored them. What can we know for certain about the world or ourselves? Can we prove the existence of God? How is the mind related to the body? What does it mean to be moral or immoral? What is justice? How should society be organized? Questions such as these are central to how we think about the world and form the core of the discipline of philosophy. This text answers these essential questions and explores how philosophical movements have considered them. Organized by theme and topic rather than historically, key terms are explained, such as metaphysics and existentialism.
