Real Time Proven Commodity Spreads: The 20 Most Consistently Profitable Low-Risk Trades
Average Reviews:

I first balked at the high price of this book. It didn't matter that it was written by professional futures trader, George Angell. I bought it and studied the different spread trades that he dedicates a chapter each to. This book will be useful for years to come from taking these trades. The price is well worth it in just one or two contract spreads.

The Very Latest E-Mini Trading: Using Market Anticipation to Trade Electronic Futures Review

The Very Latest E-Mini Trading: Using Market Anticipation to Trade Electronic Futures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An excellent primer for the beginning trader and good insights for more experienced traders. What stands out about this book is that Mr. Gutmann is not a professional trader, but got into trading like most of his readers probably got into trading, by thinking this looks like an easy way to make money (ha, ha). However, unlike 90% of beginning traders, Mr. Gutmann has become consistently profitable. Reading about his journey to profitability is a must for new traders. It takes hard work and he has some good advice.
The middle of the book is a detailed explanation of his trading plan. There are many concepts explained. New traders should not get overwhelmed with all the set-ups but initially focus on pull back or retracement strategies and stick to one market. I'm impressed that Mr. Gutmann can trade so many set-ups.
The set-ups are straight forward (most are available in TradeStation and the author will send you the indicators and TradeStation workspaces for a modest fee) and you won't find much more information from on-line trading schools or seminars. More experienced traders will appreciate the discussion on the expected values of one, two and three tier trades.
I enjoyed the book and can't wait to hear more from Mr. Gutmann as his trading evolves.

This book differs greatly from other books on seasonal trading. It's not just a list of times to enter and exit the market. Momsen has combined a three pronged totally mechanical system to each time frame. This system includes an entry channel, trailing profit channel and the very important protective stop channel. The system allows profits to run while controlling losses. All of the trades check out on Tradestation and I can't wait to begin trading and making profits.

Day Trading Grain Futures: A Practical Guide to Trading for a Living (Na) Review

Day Trading Grain Futures: A Practical Guide to Trading for a Living (Na)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the only futures day trading book I know of that deals exclusively with the grain futures markets - specifically corn, soybeans, and wheat.
The first few chapters of the book cover the basics of trading grain commodity futures. In the balance of the book the author explains and profusely illustrates his trading method, which is reasonably simple and straightforward.
What I especially like about this book: (1) you trade with the trend ("The trend is your friend" is such a bromide in futures trading that almost nobody follows it anymore. They should. It works.). (2) You execute a maximum of one trade a day. (3) You calculate your profit objectives on every trade, how many contracts you can trade, and how much risk you should take on each trade - all before you ever enter a trade. (4) You track your trades to make sure the average profits on your winning trades are larger than the average losses on your losing trades. (5) You constantly monitor your trading method execution to ensure that you're winning more often than you're losing.
Caveats: You should thoroughly review the examples in the book, practice reading intraday candlestick charts, and paper trade in real time before you begin live trading. Also, practice using the tools the author recommends for determining your profit objectives, position size and stop loss points.

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading) Review

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Intermarket analysis is poorly covered in current literature, with few books of historical data and boring details.
Instead in this book the Author, who has mastered the Intermarket analysis, shares discoveries on market correlations, and helps reader to develop indicators and strategies for Etf, Futures and Stocks.
This book makes easier to understand today markets, and I suggest it for intraday and both long and short term trading. It is not for fiction traders who bet on markets direction, but for people really trading their own accounts, studying a lot of technical analysis and pondering experts ideas.
The book is written in plain English, contains useful info on international markets, and a lot of MetaStock (MS) codes to help users to design (or improving their) trading systems, even you aren't the best programmer. Users of other technical software can easily develop their trading strategies, because in the Appendix there are the MS formulas and Test Specifications for all systems.
Reading this book grow up your fever to go to your pc for studying the correlations Author disclosed, and training with his trading strategies !
Minus : discussion on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms are very introductory (but these are very specific topics). Author limited his Intermarket analysis to major markets, and not all exchange products are covered.
Plus : the best book on the subject I ever red : the Intermarket concepts behind trading ideas are well explained. Trading strategies are deeply tested. Author insights help to really make money in today markets. Good value for price : many systems described would cost hundred dollars to buy !

International Commodity Trading Review

This is not really about commodities, it is a basic and general discussion about futures
and options markets. It looks like every other text that regurgitates basic concepts on futures
and options without any real in depth analysis of the individual commodities. They section on
physical markets is what I thought would differentiate this text from others..and it begins to...
but ends after 20+ pages...a bit of a rip off.

In addition to discussing financial and commodity futures and options, this book links them to the physical economy at large, a linkage which is particularly important when one is thinking of physical commodity markets. The book looks at not only the futures of derivative markets, but it also explores the physical markets and the underlying economy.
Written by leading authors in the field of commodity markets
Contains numerous up-to-date examples, case studies, and scenarios to assist in gaining an overall understanding
Covers all aspects of commodity trading, including the inter-relationship between the different functions

High-Performance Managed Futures: The New Way to Diversify Your Portfolio (Wiley Finance) Review

High-Performance Managed Futures: The New Way to Diversify Your Portfolio (Wiley Finance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to thank Mark Melin for writing this important book on managed futures. As a futures trader and broker I have a strong interest in the government regulated professionally managed futures asset class. After reading numerous academic papers on the importance of using non-correlated assets to best create the most effective Risk vs Reward long term portfolio, it was interesting to learn that managed futures are the most non-correlated of the asset classes. Mr Melin shows that even other generally non-corrleated assets to equities can become very correlated at market or economic dislocation when the non-correlation is most important. What is interesting is that at just such times the non-correlation of managed futures has stood out.
I have read many papers and books on managed futures and I find that this book is the most through and comprehensive, covering all the issues that an investor or financial advisor needs to understand this important asset class including:
*Investor protection based on the very strict Government Regulations that make Managed Futures so much safer than other HedgeFunds
*The topic of diversification is critical but where he gets into the nuts and bolts of the industry discussing volatility and correlation is where the book really shines
*Why differentiating between volatility on the upside and volatility on the downside better measures what investors are really concerned about as well as giving a better sense of how well the Managed Fund advisor handles adversity
*Why, as professionals understand, working out the risk issues first along with preparation for all eventualities is more important than just looking at returns
*Why diversifying even within the Managed Futures allocation between markets, methods and time frames is paramount and that once done the returns will almost take care of themselves
*How to evaluate Managed Futures Advisors and how to understand their disclosure documents
*And what I found most important and generally not covered elsewhere is how to actively manage the account once it has been established including the graphic tools to determine that the investment is not straying from the parameters that were used to establish the position.
This is a must read for anyone considering managed futures and those working to develop uncorrelated portfolios...

Steidlmayer on Markets: Trading with Market Profile, 2nd Edition Review

Steidlmayer on Markets: Trading with Market Profile, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is in two parts. In the first part, Steidlmayer gives some personal background and tells about how he developed the Market Profile(TM) method as well as gives some insights into why it works based on his experience. He describes points about using his methods before we really know much about what they even are. The concepts are not the usual technical analysis kinds of things. These are new (since about 1981) ways of looking at markets that are based the underlying process viewed with the help of some elementary statistical ideas. The primary concepts involve looking at the time the market spends at a price to determine value. Value is different from price. (Time seems to be a surrogate for volume but volume information was not available generally back when the methods were developed.)
In the second part of the book, Steve Hawkins attempts to explain more systematically the concepts of market profile. Some of the terminology is reasonably well explained, but the synthesis of the concepts seems to be lacking. I was not satisfied with the explanations. I felt I had to take his clues and figure out the ideas myself. I frequently found myself rereading passages two or three times to make sure I caught the ideas which were opaquely explained. I hope this is not the best explanation of Market Profile (it is the first book I have read on the topic, but I like it very well). Finally, the last chapter is pure unadulterated and unapologetic promotion of their products. I do not know anything about these, but I think I prefer CQG's graphics to their CapFlow graphics.
I would give this book five stars for originality, but only three, or maybe four stars, for clarity of explanation.

Fundamentals of the Futures Market Review

Fundamentals of the Futures Market
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most "investment advice" books suffer from poor editing, both of the 'grammar & syntax' variety, and, more distressingly for this genre, flat-out incorrect information. Klines's book is no exception- the grammar & syntax are fine, but her book is replete with factual errors and misstatements. For example, on page 207, she defines a synthetic long futures as "sell a call option, buy a put option." Wrong. That is a synthetic short position. Similar errors pervade the book.
One useful feature is chapter 3, which presents futures contract specifications. However, even here, some of the information is occasionally confusing or misleading.
This book is published by McGraw-Hill, a highly reputable house. My surmise is that McGraw-Hill has no financial experts on its editorial staff; otherwise, it wouldn't tolerate the publication of such a sloppily-edited piece. Disappointing!

The New Commodity Trading Guide: Breakthrough Strategies for Capturing Market Profits Review

The New Commodity Trading Guide: Breakthrough Strategies for Capturing Market Profits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I generally do not write reviews, however I found the strategies in this book so beneficial for any serious trader (or serious trader-to-be) that I felt compelled to add my two cents.

The concepts presented in the Trading Guide are elegant, simple yet profound. The author points out there's no `Holy Grail', however I have already used his SNI and Voice from the Tomb for successful trades, and his `Breakthrough Strategy' in my experience identifies the major trends more often than not.

In response to `Old Fashioned' I felt this review unfair in that the moving average explanation was tucked not in the body of the book but in the Appendix with this section specifically targeted for novices not familiar with how these work (and I do not see where he talks about calculating by hand?) Don't let this one review put you off as the body of the book presents many old and new useful concepts some I have not seen before in my many years of trading.

An excellent and essential trading book for anyone trading or thinking of trading commodity futures.

"I've been trading stocks and commodities for more than 30 years, and I've read any number of how-to books, but George Kleinman's The New Commodity Trading Guide is as clear, precise, and useful as any book I've come across during my career. I cannot recommend it strongly enough, if for no other reason than George finally explains 'The Voice from the Tomb' better than any of the old guard at the CBOT. Read it and reap."--Dennis Gartman, editor/publisher The Gartman Letter, L.C."Commodities present great financial opportunity and, as every hedge fund and trader has experienced, great risk. This book shows how to use commodity trading and volatility to capture excess profits while limiting losses. These lessons are as critical for investors as they are for traders, as we are likely to be in a volatile trading environment for the foreseeable future."--Daniel J. Dart, private investor and COO, Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, Third Party Group (retired)"George Kleinman's book has just the right blend of practical trading wisdom, technical charting, and fundamental analysis. It's full of revealing discussions about seasonal trading patterns and long term trends. But most importantly it presents a balanced view that honestly reveals both the difficulties and advantages of being a private commodities trader. There's something here for both experienced investors and beginners interested in learning from a seasoned expert."--Jeff Augen, author of The Volatility Edge in Options Trading and Trading Options at Expiration"I highly recommend George Kleinman's The New Commodity Trading Guide. George's insights, the result of 25 years of successful trading experience, are explained in a way that a new trader can grasp and, at the same time, an experienced trader can translate into his own trading. Best of all, George presents many of his own creative trading methods including his Natural Number Method, explained for the first time in this book."--Jeff Quinto, president of Transformative Trading and futures trading coach"Since leaving the trading floor, George is one of the few people I still talk to about the markets, and this book clearly shows why. He is able to take classic time-tested methods of technical analysis and adapt them to the conditions faced by today's electronic traders."--Andrew Stanton, 20-year veteran of the NY trading floorsOver the long term, commodities prices are expected to rise based on massive increases in global demand. But, as many investors have discovered the hard way, merely knowing this is not enough to make consistent profits. Fundamental changes in the commodities markets have occurred that have implications most investors do not understand. For instance, century-old "open outcry" trading floors have now been replaced with computerized trading. In The New Commodity Trading Guide, commodities expert George Kleinman reveals the new practical realities of worldwide electronic commodities trading and specific strategies for capitalizing on today's radically different markets.Kleinman shows how to leverage the one indicator that consistently drives commodity prices today...introduces the right ways to trade on news and profit from trends...reveals consistent seasonal price shifts that mean huge profits...shows which conventional strategies still work (and which don't!). Finally, he introduces the Natural Number Method, a breakthrough approach that any commodities trader can use to supercharge performance!Capturing the 5000% returnWhat you can learn from one of history's fastest price moves

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Wiley Trading) Review

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't even know Mr. Bulkowski, but I felt compelled to write this review. One particular reviewer points out a few apparent discrepancies in this 672 page volume of research. It does not matter whether you are an author or have been published in trading-related magazines.
The reviewer sarcastically poses that since the "rectangle bottom" stats on page 659 portray a zero faulure rate, that traders can get rich and never lose money!
If you truly read the entire text, including Mr. Bulkowski's opening remarks that define his fresh statistical-analysis approach, then everything falls into place.
Furthermore, the author addresses the "zero loss stat" for the rectangle formation on pages 440 and 444. He states that the "sample size" was small for this pattern and said: "Let me emphasize that because I did not find any failures of rectangle patterns with upside breakouts does not mean there are none."
This is a good and comprehensive book with a very fresh statistical approach for analyzing classic (and newer) bar chart formations. There is a wealth of information addressing each of the many patterns. It is offered up to the reader as copious amounts of quantified data that any trader/investor can draw from to incorporate into his or her own trading.
I too am an author, and I trade stocks full-time for a living. This book is a great resource and fits in the top 15 T.A. books of which I own roughly 300.
Yeah, he called a "dogi" a "hanging man." To me that doesn't detract from the other 671 pages.
Buy it, read it and use it!

Gold Trading Boot Camp: How to Master the Basics and Become a Successful Commodities Investor

This is one of the most useful trading books I've seen in a long long time.
As a broker and former Risk Manager in the financial markets, I am usually somewhat suspicious of books by "traders" and/or "pundits". I usually find myself confronted by lots of self-serving drivel and advice that is not in any way applicable to typical traders. This book is a refreshing change from that.
Every new or newer trader should read this book. The excellent charts and analysis contained on them are worth the book's price all by themselves. What I found of particular interest, though, was his honest and refreshing approach to the oft-neglected subject of Risk. Every trader should read this portion of the book.
The book lays out in intricate detail the process a true professional trader must go through to successfully speculate. Fascinating stuff!

"If speculate you must, read Weldon first."—James Grant, Editor, Grant's Interest Rate Observer
"This book delivers on all of the essential elements of successful financial literature. Weldon provides a compelling context, walks through the metrics that affect the price action, and assimilates the decision-making process in kind. From soup to nuts, this is one of the most comprehensive tutorials I've read on the subject of commodities."—Todd Harrison, founder and CEO, Minyanville Publishing and Multimedia, LLC
"The gold price is rising in today's turbulent financial times. Preparation and knowledge are essential to profit from higher prices, and this book provides everything you need to take advantage of the trading opportunities thatlie ahead."—James Turk, founder, GoldMoney.com
"This book, with its insights into the current investment climate coincides with what many feel is a new bull market in gold. There is no 'one-size-fits-all' investment approach, but every investor who applies such preparation and rigor as Greg outlines will certainly have increased returns with fewer losses. It should be on every investor's bookshelf, handy for reference, and re-read every year. Greg puts paid to the notion of random walk!"—Kim Evans, CEO, Global Building and Supply

Trading Commodities and Financial Futures: A Step by Step Guide to Mastering the Markets, 3rd Edition Review

Trading Commodities and Financial Futures: A Step by Step Guide to Mastering the Markets, 3rd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Too much novice information, considering this is the internet age and three quarters of the book can be found for free by just looking a little which is what the internet/search is for. Hardly anyone that knows "nothing" about investing is going to start trading commodities first, which it seems the book is addressed to.
This book would have been hot about 1985, helping you calculate a simple moving average with a pencil and paper. It really needs updating to remove anachronisms.
The big illustrated trading system TMVTT should be taken with a pound of salt. I have tested these kind of algorithms using trading software on historical data and their results are unimpressive in my opinion. I wrote special code to test the "trend reversal day trading system" as published, and ran it against two years of U.S. Dollar / Swiss Franc through February 2006. Doesn't work. As a concept these systems have their merits as serious reminders of how important it is to trade with the trend, but mechanically they don't work in real markets in general. This has surprised me every time I test mathematically the actual results of these approaches, since I do believe the author is correct in saying they are commonly used in markets, and frankly it could be a big reason why technical analysis has a bad name for a lot of people with casual exposure. If your trading plan is to hold a contract for a fairly long period (many weeks, months), or you want to be convinced to, this is where the wisdom of the book shines.
The book does have its appeal in the oddest places (some comments on contract terms, agricultural trading rules from the grave) that make you aware of the sincerity of the author and appreciate him overall for the effort.
It took me 2 hours to get through the whole book, and another hour to write the code and test the algorithm. And I'm pretty much done with it. But I'm no novice. But then, you probably aren't either.
