The Exchange-Traded Funds Manual (Wiley Finance) Review

The Exchange-Traded Funds Manual (Wiley Finance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gary Gastineau, a managing director at Nuveen Investments and the author of The Options Manual (1988), has written the most detailed account available in print of open-ended exchange-traded funds: how they work, what are their distinctive characteristics, who trades them (largely, specialists, market makers, and hedge funds), who owns them (largely, brokerage firms clearing and carrying the ETF shares for specialists, market makers, or hedge funds), and what are their advantages and disadvantages over other sorts of investment for various investors.
This is no gripping page-turner, in the league of Jack Schwager's "Wizards" series. But it doesn't need to be. Mr. Gastineau's manual is directed chiefly at investment advisers and financial planners as a reference volume, and it serves that purpose quite well. Advisers and planners, and of course their clients, face a bewildering variety of issues pertaining to these relatively new vehicles-issues of tax efficiency, risk management, trading costs and spreads, etc. In many offices, this book will be a welcome aid in sorting out all of that.

Smarter Investing in Any Economy: The Definitive Guide to Relative Strength Investing Review

Smarter Investing in Any Economy: The Definitive Guide to Relative Strength Investing
Average Reviews:

With a title like that, you have to wonder if it can possibly live up to such a claim. I think so, and here's why:
1. He develops his ideas clearly, starting with the rationale behind RS, and its use in top trading strategies, such as Investors Business Daily and Value Line.
2. He then walks you through a variety of approaches (18!) to calculating RS, one step at a time, showing you how each one is calculated, and illustrating these with graphs.
3. Next, he walks you through his tests on RS, based on a broad range of sectors, with each of the above approaches, to show you how he arrives at his conclusions.
4. Along the way, he carefully addresses important questions that every trader must deal with, such as selection criteria, diversification, risk, stops, etc. He backs every point up with his own research, and with references to the key work of others--the academic research, and that of key authors such as Van Tharp and James O'Shaughnessy.
5. Ultimately, he develops this into a full fledged trading program for every kind of market.
Whether you are a systems trader or not, I strongly believe that if you only incorporate the least of his ideas on Relative Strength, you'll take a quantum leap forward with your trading.

This book is about letting the little guy do what the big guy has always done. Hedge funds, pension funds, and other institutions have always used relative strength investing to rack up big returns, yet the methodology has never been presented to the individual investor as a viable, easy-to-understand investment strategy, as it is in this book. Michael Carr, a personal investor with a longtime background in system design and analysis, has applied his professional expertise to investing. After running millions of relative strength calculations, Carr proves that relative strength investing works in any market climate. By strictly following his methodologies outlined in this book, you can more than double the returns of the S&P 500, with less risk. Carr shares his results, methodology, and step-by-step instructions here in this book. Smarter Investing in Any Economy: The Definitive Guide to Relative Strength Investing will show you how relative strength strategies allow you to invest successfully in both bull and bear markets. Even in a market downturn, something is always going up. Relative strength will help you pinpoint that stock, currency, or commodity that s on its way up. Recent advances in computing capability and the widespread availability of ETFs have now opened up relative strength strategies to virtually any investor. Relative strength has been widely used for years by financial institutions; however, it was never accessible to individual investors because of complex custom programming requirements. Computing advances, coupled with new ETFs that limit risk have made relative strength a viable strategy for long-term investors and day traders alike. Carr has broken down his technique to the level that any Microsoft user can implement his strategies successfully.

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading) Review

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

The Intermarket analysis is poorly covered in current literature, with few books of historical data and boring details.
Instead in this book the Author, who has mastered the Intermarket analysis, shares discoveries on market correlations, and helps reader to develop indicators and strategies for Etf, Futures and Stocks.
This book makes easier to understand today markets, and I suggest it for intraday and both long and short term trading. It is not for fiction traders who bet on markets direction, but for people really trading their own accounts, studying a lot of technical analysis and pondering experts ideas.
The book is written in plain English, contains useful info on international markets, and a lot of MetaStock (MS) codes to help users to design (or improving their) trading systems, even you aren't the best programmer. Users of other technical software can easily develop their trading strategies, because in the Appendix there are the MS formulas and Test Specifications for all systems.
Reading this book grow up your fever to go to your pc for studying the correlations Author disclosed, and training with his trading strategies !
Minus : discussion on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms are very introductory (but these are very specific topics). Author limited his Intermarket analysis to major markets, and not all exchange products are covered.
Plus : the best book on the subject I ever red : the Intermarket concepts behind trading ideas are well explained. Trading strategies are deeply tested. Author insights help to really make money in today markets. Good value for price : many systems described would cost hundred dollars to buy !

If you are an investment professional and are trading, or interested in trading ETF's this book should be on your desk. I have reviewed several ETF publications in the past few months. I returned all of them except for this one. As we know ETF's are not just another equity. This publication exposes the myth that posted volume of an ETF is its liquidity. It also explains the best method of buying and selling ETF. This point alone can save you hundreds of thousands on transaction fees. (Of course this is on an institutional size trade.) It also empowers you with the knowledge of how the market makers and broker dealers work with these products. With over 800 listed ETF's for just the United States, as a professional money manager you owe it to yourself to read book. It will assist you in doing your due diligence on these investments. As you can tell I think this is a must read!

I trade as a second job and read over 80 books about trading and investing so far in my career. if you read other books about sector rotation, like john murphy s intermarket analysis and Laidi s " currency trading and intermarket analysis " and were expecting something similar dont buy this book. is has only very superficial information about sector rotation. the rest of the book is about common sense investing rules, some trading tips and some quotes about sun tzu. they are all worthwhile for a beginner who just started trading but thats it. the chapters about 5 sector supertrends are more than obvious. who doesnt know that china is growing a lot and will consume a lot of commodities? please. I did not pay to hear that. This author poorly matched the contents of his book with the title. Other readers should be warned. If you want to know about sector rotation, and i say that because this is exactly my trading style, you should read the above mentioned books or Sam Stovall s " sector analysis" . Apart from that you have Martin Pring's newsletter and thats about it. no more worthwhile reading in the market about sector rotation. sorry for my spelling I am so pissed of because i bought this book that I am writing this review from my cell.

ETF Trading Strategies Revealed (Trade Secrets (Marketplace Books)) Review

ETF Trading Strategies Revealed (Trade Secrets (Marketplace Books))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is "worth its weight in gold" if you are serious about trading or investing using Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). On first impression it seems like a pretty thin book (90 pages), and the heart of the material in Part III is just 30 pages. But in Part III you learn very simple, practical, back-tested rules and strategies for outperforming the market by rotating periodically to the best-performing ETFs. The book presents results (compound annual returns) from following these strategies from 1998 to 2006, ranging from 15-16% for style index rotation to 19% adding an international ETF, 20% for sector ETFs, and 26% using Fidelity sector funds. [...]
The hardest thing for many traders or investors to accept may be that such simple, mechanical strategies that require monitoring the market only once every other week (with variants once per week or once per month) can perform so well. They work, for these funds better than for individual stocks, because of persistence of trends within market sectors, and styles such as value vs. growth and large-cap vs. small-cap that last even longer. Many people want to use fancy indicators, and many traders are in the market for the action and are too impatient for this approach. But if your goal is to simply make money with less risk than the overall stock market, this approach is very practical and usable.
The other 60 pages of this book include an introduction to ETFs and how they work, two chapters on chart analysis -- one written by Steve Palmquist, a successful professional trader, and one where David Vomund interviews well-known trader Linda Bradford Raschke -- and a short chapter on trader psychology that presents the personal trading process used by Dr. J.D. Smith, founder of AIQ Systems. They are very worthwhile for their advice and antidotes to the traps that traders often fall into.
I know David Vomund and knew Jerry Smith personally, and have met Linda Raschke and Steve Palmquist -- these are four very good people to learn from. David Vomund, the author, manages money using these strategies, and writes and presents seminars for AIQ. He is rated by Timer Digest as one of the ten best market timers for the 10-year period ending December 31, 2005, and has appeared on the cover of that publication twice in this period. But none of this seems to go to his head -- David's philosophy is pretty simple, practical, and all about making money rather than trading excitement or fame. If you actually apply these strategies, this book should literally be worth its weight (just a few ounces) in gold, and potentially quite a bit more.

Trading ETFs: Gaining an Edge with Technical Analysis Review

Trading ETFs: Gaining an Edge with Technical Analysis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Deron Wagner,in Trading ETFs, has presented a very simple, logical and, I think, successful approach to trading ETFs. In a very readable and understandable style and utilizing numerous chart examples, Mr. Wagner describes how he goes about finding the highest probability trades, how he determines the optimum entry point, how he manages open positions, and how he exits positions be they big winners, breakevens, or losers.
He describes his approach as being a "top down strategy". His first step is to determine the direction of the broad market trend; then, once the trend is determined, he finds those indexes that have the most relative strength or weakness compared to the major indexes; then he selects the strongest ETFs within those indexes (or weakest if going short); then he looks at volume for confirmation; and finally he uses one or more of several techniques to properly time the new entry into the selected ETF.
The one thing that I liked most about Mr. Wagner's book was his use of clean and simple charts. He uses almost exclusively only two and sometimes three moving averages, draws simple trendlines and areas of support and resistance, and shows volume levels and averages. He does not "goop' his charts up with additonal indicators such as MACD-Histograms, slow stochastics, and RSI. While these indicators are certainly very useful to many traders, Wagner's plain, simple approach of looking only at price action and volume confirmation has a lot to be said for it.
Risk management and position sizing are touched upon only briefly but adequately and his comments about using trailing stops are most enlightening.
The two chapters describing case studies of 10 ETF's bought long and 10 ETFs sold short are most useful in illustrating the use of Mr. Wagner's various setups.
I have read Trading ETFs only once now but I am already looking forward to going through it again a second and third time. It is the type of book that you can only absorb only so much the first time around but pick even more pearls of wisdom on subsequent readings.
Needless to say, I recommend Mr. Wagner's newest book highly.
