Insurgent Mexico. Review

Insurgent Mexico.
Average Reviews:

This book has been notorious since its publication in 1914. The author was a vagabond leftist reporter for the American radical press, and did not go to Mexico City riding in relative comfort on the press train accompanying the Division del Norte of General Francisco "Pancho" Villa during his successful Constitutionalist southward campaign against the Federalista forces of the usurper General Victoriano Huerta; he who had murdered president Madero and his vice president, and seized power in Mexico City in conjunction the forces of Zapata.
Instead, Reed, in accord with his common man leanings, while on campaign, lived among the "grunts", Mexican campesinos who made up the bulk of Villa's forces.
There are incisive pen portraits of the Constitutionalist leaders, descriptions of the wretched living conditions of the people, observations on the siege of Torréon, N.L.. and nearby Gomez Palacio, neighboring key strategic cities on the railroad south from Juarez to Mexico City.
This is not history or reporting but a collection of impressionistic and justifiably biased essays. Still very valuable for the feel of the times and has been translated into many languages. The author later went to Russia and wrote "Ten Days That Shook the World." (c.f.) about the October Revolution.

Hard Tack and Coffee Review

Hard Tack and Coffee

Josh Billings served with the 10th Mass Battery of Light Artillery during the Civil War. After having written the Official "History of the 10th Mass Battery" he responded to numerous requests to write a book about daily life in the Union Army. "Hardtack and Coffee" is an unpretentious, humorous look at life in the Union Army, Particularly the Light Artillery During the Civil War. Mr. Billings paints a vivid picture of living life under canvas, in the field. He addresses such topics as Army food, The day by Bugle calls, Beats (people who "avoided work"), punishments and more. This book is not a comedy, but is written with a light and readable style that makes it interesting to the average reader, as well as to those interested in the Civil War. this book is a must read for all readers of Civil War literature.

I have read more than a hundred books on the Vietnam war. I found this one to be the best. I'm astonished how any one could give less than five stars. I found his honesty refreshing. His integrity as top notch. The book is a must read for anyone who wants the dirty truth of how political correctness can be more important than mens lives. The micromanagement that lead to the the failure of the entire Vietnam war is made plain and clear by Mr Warr. I can understand how Mr Warr received a carthsis effect by writing this book. He does us all an honor by sharing the truth with us. I beleive he deserves a silver star for telling the truth. I shall read this book again and again.

First Footsteps in East Africa Review

First Footsteps in East Africa
Average Reviews:

Though I was aware of Burton before reading this text, I had no idea how much I would enjoy his writing. His language is eloquent, with an almost stereotypically dry British wit, especially as he describes his companions. At times, Burton seems to lose himself in the aesthetic response to Africa's environment, allowing his writing to swell to almost purple prose in his descriptions.
I also enjoyed reading this text through the lens of Edward Said's notions of Orientalism. Burton certainly falls prey to the Eurocentrism typical of his era, and at times his descriptions of the rationale of his Arab / Somali companions is borderline offensive. However, what I found most interesting in this text is Burton's own critique of Europeans. In First Footsteps, one could argue that Said's Orientalism isn't driven by culture but class. Burton is just as disgusted by the English working class as he is by Somali nomads.
The Kindle version contains no illustrations; I would highly recommend referring to a map while reading First Footsteps. Also, the footnotes are not linked, but I didn't find that particularly bothersome.

As a young college student, Francis Parkman, the later noted historian of the early West, goes to the land of the Lakotas and experiences their life. This is a personal history of the travels of the author through the lands of the Lakota before the great American westward expansion. Tales of Indian life and their "wars" with each other. Also tells first hand of the author's maturation in this environment. Should be required reading for any "lover of the wild west" because "This Was The It Was".

Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant Review

Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
General Grant wrote this book while dying of throat cancer. He had been swindled by a dishonest Wall Street Broker and his trophies and possessions were stripped from him to satisfy the demands of his debtors. Bankrupt, suffering from a terminal illness and never passing a moment without acute pain, he produced this magnificent monument to his greatness. Those who denigrate Grant as a drunkard, butcher, bumbling President need to read this book in order to correct these errant assumptions. It is impossible to read this book and not realize that Grant was an inordinately intelligent man and one hell of a writer.
Grant's Memoirs are a deserved classic in American literature and considered the greatest military Memoirs ever penned, exceeding Caesar's Commentaries. Grant wrote as he lived: with clear, concise statements, unembellished with trivialities or frivolities. The only "criticism" the reader might have is that Grant bent over backwards not to wound the feelings of people in the book. He takes swipes at Joe Hooker and Jeff Davis, but what he left unsaid would have been far more interesting. A compelling and logical reason why Grant was so spare in his comments was because he was involved in a race with death. He didn't know how long he could live and therefore, "cut to the chase."
Grant's assessments of Lincoln, Sherman, Sheridan and other military leaders are brilliant and engrossing. His style, like the man himself, was inimitable and couldn't be copied. In everyday life, Grant was a very funny man, who liked to listen to jokes and tell them himself. His sense of the absurd was acute. It's no accident that he loved Mark Twain and the two hitched together very well. Twain and Grant shared a similar sense of humor, and Grant's witicisms in the Memoirs are frequent, unexpected and welcome. There are portions where you will literally laugh out loud.
Though Grant's Memoirs were written 113 years ago, they remain fresh, vibrant and an intensely good read. I have read them in! their entirity 30 times in my life and I never weary of the style and language that Grant employed. He was a military genius to be sure, but he was also a writer of supreme gifts, and these gifts shine through on every page of this testament to his greatness. All Americans should read this book and realize what we owe to Grant: he preserved the union with his decisive brilliance. In his honor, we should be eternally grateful.

Civil Rights History from the Ground Up: Local Struggles, a National Movement

Civil Rights History From the Ground Up provides a compelling survey of civil rights struggles that began in the South and spread across the nation, offering college-level readers a collection of scholarly debates and examples discussing the central issues of the movement. Teachers and advanced students of civil rights receive a fine movement history that clarifies the extent of debates surrounding the issues.

After decades of scholarship on the civil rights movement at the local level, the insights of bottom-up movement history remain essentially invisible in the accepted narrative of the movement and peripheral to debates on how to research, document, and teach about the movement. This collection of original works refocuses attention on this bottom-up history and compels a rethinking of what and who we think is central to the movement.

The essays examine such locales as Sunflower County, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; and Wilson, North Carolina; and engage such issues as nonviolence and self-defense, the implications of focusing on women in the movement, and struggles for freedom beyond voting rights and school desegregation. Events and incidents discussed range from the movement's heyday to the present and include the Poor People's Campaign mule train to Washington, D.C., the popular response to the deaths of Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King, and political cartoons addressing Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

The kinds of scholarship represented here—which draw on oral history and activist insights (along with traditional sources) and which bring the specificity of time and place into dialogue with broad themes and a national context—are crucial as we continue to foster scholarly debates, evaluate newer conceptual frameworks, and replace the superficial narrative that persists in the popular imagination.

Children of Strangers Review

Children of Strangers
Average Reviews:

I think it is stupid to rate this book based on some misconceptions of how Mr Saxon viewed blacks or rural people. Saxon was regarded by anyone who knew him as very progressive in this regard if not a bit too paternalistic. One of the obituaries written of him at his passing referred to him as "friend toward black people".
The cane river plantation was Lyle Saxon's home away from home when he wasn't in his beloved New Orleans. Saxon had a great nostalgia for his days as a youth in a plantation just south of Baton rouge. He loved to relax there and did his most productive writing there. As an educated and cultured man living most of the time in New Orleans and hanging around people like Sherwood Anderson and William Faulkner he probably would think of rural farm people as uncultured or less educated. I don't have a problem with that.
Saxon here provides an insightful story of plantation life from the inside looking out. He delves into the attitudes of Creoles and race and how they perceived the world. He was fully aware that while plantation life was a getaway and relaxation to him it was hard work for those who relied on it to live.
This is a well crafted piece thaqt is tight and well detailed and it should be it took him years write. Lyle Saxon is best known for his love of New Orleans especially his beloved view carrie and he was instrumental in popularizing it as a place for writers and artists. While Saxon lived most of his adult life in New Orleans most of his writings are about plantation life a subject very near and dear to him. Children of strangers is a seminal book of it's kind!
Other Saxon books about plantation life in Louisiana-Friends of joe Gilmour-Father Mississippi-Old Louisiana.
No writer loved Louisiana more or wrote about it better.

Through The Brazilian Wilderness Review

Through The Brazilian Wilderness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Theodore Roosevelt was a man's man. A New York kid whose taste for adventure was sparked in his boyhood by a dead seal for sale on a Broadway sidewalk. Harvard student, soldier, Rough Rider, youngest President ever and one who survived the assassin's bullet, maverick politician, Nobel Prize winner, hunter and conservationist, and finally the man who, at 55 years old, explored an unknown region of the Amazon river basin. Imagine one of today's former-Presidents undertaking a similar adventure. For six weeks, in 1914, Roosevelt and his party paddled and carried their canoes down a previously unexplored 950-mile river now called the Rio Roosevelt. Men died, boats were lost, food became scarce, dangerous animals and natives were about, fever borne by insects sickened many in the party (and led to Roosevelt's own death five years later). This is the stuff of "Through the Brazilian Wilderness".
Roosevelt's other works, including "The Rough Riders", are better known, and this one is not great literature. Instead, it is a remarkable adventure story by an interesting man. The book is essentially Roosevelt's trip diary, colored by his great enthusiasm for adventure and the natural world. Even before reaching the Amazon, Roosevelt stops at a Brazilian snake research lab that so captures his attention that he writes seventeen pages about it. At all times, he makes careful note of the wildlife he encounters, not quite with the depth of a professional scientist, but with the trained eye of a dedicated and experienced hobbyist. He squeezes in some amusing stories about piranha fish that he heard --and apparently believed. Naturalists of the day killed animals in the name of science, which places in context Roosevelt's joy in hunting and his comments: first on alligators ("They are often dangerous and are always destructive to fish, and it is good to shoot them") and later on conservation ("There is every reason why the good people of South America should waken... to the duty of preserving from extinction the wildlife which is an asset of such interest."). The book is most poetic in its description of animal life, and particularly in registering surprise that the myriad insects are far more pernicious than any of the better-known dangers such as alligators, big cats, or piranhas.
The book's is not perfect, and Roosevelt is not a great author in a literary sense, rather making up in enthusiasm what he lacks in prose and penetrating insight. There is no attempt at political analysis, he simply praises Brazilians as good hosts who have started down the road to democracy. He sees the land he travels through as like the United States of perhaps a hundred years earlier, so there are frequent predictions that a promising location is ripe for development. The limited foray into politics is to praise Positivism, the ideology of the Brazilian military class that emphasized modernity and structure, and that not incidentally justified the many instances of military intervention in Brazilian politics over the years. Finally, the one annoyance is the recurring theme (perhaps a dozen times in all) of the true danger of the journey. Over and over we read that the river has never been charted, that it is truly dangerous, that the explorers are not your armchair-adventurer variety, and that such voyages will necessarily be easier for those who follow in the future. We get that.
Roosevelt was an interesting man, his enthusiasm and taste for adventure are infectious. The book is not a literary triumph, but it is a fun read and an excellent journey through the Amazon

Theodore Roosevelt's account of his expedition to explore the Amazon River (known as the River of Doubt) shows a lot of the reasons we still admire him. First, he was a serious scientist. He was dedicated to discovering new species of wildlife (and could rattle off their Latin names with the best of them), mapping unknown stretches of river, and observing the ways of foreign lands. We know Teddy Roosevelt as a physical character and often forget what a highly intelligent man he was. Second, his writing is greatly under-appreciated. He doesn't breeze over his descriptions of wildlife or the landscape--it's pretty technical stuff--but he does it clearly and concisely. As someone who has labored through countless pedantic textbooks, I took comfort in his words, "Ability to write well, if the writer had nothing to write about, entitles him to mere derision. But the greatest thought is robbed of an immense proportion of its value if expressed in a mean or obscure manner." Third, despite the above, he could still endure enormous physical hardship at an old age. Battling rapids, hauling canoes, fighting disease, and hunting game, Roosevelt had the combination of brawn and intelligence that's seriously lacking in our leaders today. This book is also a great window into a time and place forever lost to history.

Smarter Investing in Any Economy: The Definitive Guide to Relative Strength Investing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a title like that, you have to wonder if it can possibly live up to such a claim. I think so, and here's why:
1. He develops his ideas clearly, starting with the rationale behind RS, and its use in top trading strategies, such as Investors Business Daily and Value Line.
2. He then walks you through a variety of approaches (18!) to calculating RS, one step at a time, showing you how each one is calculated, and illustrating these with graphs.
3. Next, he walks you through his tests on RS, based on a broad range of sectors, with each of the above approaches, to show you how he arrives at his conclusions.
4. Along the way, he carefully addresses important questions that every trader must deal with, such as selection criteria, diversification, risk, stops, etc. He backs every point up with his own research, and with references to the key work of others--the academic research, and that of key authors such as Van Tharp and James O'Shaughnessy.
5. Ultimately, he develops this into a full fledged trading program for every kind of market.
Whether you are a systems trader or not, I strongly believe that if you only incorporate the least of his ideas on Relative Strength, you'll take a quantum leap forward with your trading.

This book is about letting the little guy do what the big guy has always done. Hedge funds, pension funds, and other institutions have always used relative strength investing to rack up big returns, yet the methodology has never been presented to the individual investor as a viable, easy-to-understand investment strategy, as it is in this book. Michael Carr, a personal investor with a longtime background in system design and analysis, has applied his professional expertise to investing. After running millions of relative strength calculations, Carr proves that relative strength investing works in any market climate. By strictly following his methodologies outlined in this book, you can more than double the returns of the S&P 500, with less risk. Carr shares his results, methodology, and step-by-step instructions here in this book. Smarter Investing in Any Economy: The Definitive Guide to Relative Strength Investing will show you how relative strength strategies allow you to invest successfully in both bull and bear markets. Even in a market downturn, something is always going up. Relative strength will help you pinpoint that stock, currency, or commodity that s on its way up. Recent advances in computing capability and the widespread availability of ETFs have now opened up relative strength strategies to virtually any investor. Relative strength has been widely used for years by financial institutions; however, it was never accessible to individual investors because of complex custom programming requirements. Computing advances, coupled with new ETFs that limit risk have made relative strength a viable strategy for long-term investors and day traders alike. Carr has broken down his technique to the level that any Microsoft user can implement his strategies successfully.

I was very disappointed with this book if you can call it a book. It is more like an essay that can be read in one hour. This book is very abrupt difficult to follow due to the lack of details. When I read a book I want to learn something from it but with this work I came away empty handed. We all know that Darwin's survival of the fittest theory personifies wall street to the tee. Yes, it is brutal unfair but so is the nature of this beast.

The title of the book suggests no bias or agenda for the work. It simply adopts the title of a very broad and complex area of commerce as it's own name; The Stock Market. The book offers a basic understanding of many aspects of the 'Market'in a way that the un-initiated can understand. Anyone looking for help in selecting a sure path to riches will be dissapointed. Anyone seeking an understanding of the basics, and how various aspects of the 'Market' relate to each other will be rewarded.
This book deliveres knowledge and understanding without bias. It can serve as general reading material or as a reference. It prepares the reader to select and understand other material.
New editions appear when the 'market' changes enough to warrant new material. The content is up to date without being padded by trendy but useless material.

The Repo Handbook, Second Edition (Securities Institute Global Capital Markets) Review

The Repo Handbook, Second Edition (Securities Institute Global Capital Markets)
Average Reviews:

During the GFC every bank was using repo to raise liquidity, but this was more with their central bank. At the same time, central banks were increasing the range of assets that could be repoed. This highlighted the importance of the repo market to me, but at the same time I don't believe there are many true repo traders around.
How can one profitably trade from repo, i.e. know what assets will trade 'special'? After all, repo existed well before the GFC but to understand how to make real money from this market does not come down to simply working with your central bank. For this reason I needed to know more, and it is always best to ask someone who has worked in this market.
I have read Moorad Choudhry's "Bond and Money Markets" and "Bank Asset Liability Management" books (both of which I highly recommend), so knowing his experience and clear explanations, with real market examples (i.e. there are a lot of bloomberg screen dumps in all his books) made it an easy choice to purchase this repo book over others.
The "Repo Handbook" starts with a market background of bonds and money markets and evolves into the functions of repo, covering trading, hedging and it's involvement with ALM. I personally prefer the trading examples as I feel one can understand Repo's uses as a market, rather than just reading a few formulas.
Once again Choudhry has written a very practical and essential book for today's market.

I loved this book. I tried diligently to follow this story as it unfolded in real time in the newspapers. As someone not in the finance industry, I knew it was important but found it near-nigh impossible to understand what had gone wrong and how. In this book, Mimi Swartz provides an insider's look (thanks to Sherron Watkins and many other Enron folk) while still maintaining equipoise. The complex financial instruments that were at the heart of this disaster are explained simply and elegantly. I also learned that, like the Milken/junk bond fiasco, the Enron disaster started with fundamentally important business innovation that is likely to remain with us. Bottom line: I couldn't put it down.

Synopsis:
"A brave prince, a ferocious dragon, and a magic sword are all familiar elements of the classic adventure story. But for thirteen-year-old Prince Aster of Caledon, the quest for the Empress Sword-the only magic strong enough to defeat the dragon menacing his kingdom-is just the beginning.
Aster has always been told that wielding great magic requires a sacrifice, but what the Empress Sword demands from him is the last thing he ever expected to lose: his own identity as crown prince and the king's only son." - GoodReads.com
Author:
Paulette Jaxton is a personal friend that comes from a heavy computer programming background. She counts NASA as one of her earliest job sources and has taken that forward thinking view into her writing. Currently, The Empress Sword [TES] is her only published novel. However, she is working on the second book in the series.
She also is working on podcasting the novel.
Review:
TES is one of the shorter Young Adult novels that I've read, however it packs a lot of twists and turns into that short span. Many of the characters in a YA tend to be abbreviated, shadows of what they could be. Jaxton manages to make the protagonist, Prince Aster, seem more rounded through all the trials and tribulations he must survive. Though, I suppose the term `protagonist' may be slightly out of place as the book opens up with the awakening of the terrible Dragon.
Mandrake, the reptile in question, is the herald for the return of his winged people who have slept for the past hundreds of years. Unfortunately for Caledon, Mandrake can't get past the notion that the mountain blocking his way to where his people sleep is the kingdom's fault. He decides it is his duty to burn the vermin from his homeland in preparation for the return of the Dragonkin.
And the only one standing in his way? Prince Aster and his search for the legendary Empress Sword, said once to hold all dragons in its sway.
This fantasy novel is a quick read at only 300 pages, but manages to keep even an adult reader's attention. There is no swearing, and the blood letting that occurs is extremely minimal.
There are quite a few smaller characters that make the subplots a fun read, and the world building is very thorough for a YA novel.
Summary:
The Empress Sword is a fine debut novel for Paulette Jaxton's series, and I look forward to what the next installment has to offer. While it is not as polished a piece as you might get from a more experienced fiction author, the book has a good plot, wit, and charming characters that will keep the reader looking for more.
Cost and Purchase:
At $19.99 (Marked down to $14.96 by Amazon) for the paperback, it seems a bit costly. If this were the hard-cover cost, I would think it a fair price. However, the electronic version of the novel is easily worth the $2.99 on Kindle.
