Playing for Keeps in Stocks and Futures: Three Top Trading Strategies that Consistently Beat the Markets Review

Playing for Keeps in Stocks and Futures: Three Top Trading Strategies that Consistently Beat the Markets
Average Reviews:

I anxiously awaited the publication of this book since I am always on the lookout for new trading ideas from Tom Bierovic. I first discovered Tom's work at one of the Futures Magazine Trading Seminars where he was a speaker. What caught my eye was the down to earth, solid, and workable trading principles he presented. I was also impressed that he had, for years, been a full time trader for his own account and was willing to share the ideas and systems that he actually used. "Playing for Keeps" is no exception. Tom lays out in detail three trading strategies that can be used in all markets and timeframes. The strategies are presented with numerous examples. I believe that with all of Tom's background in system research and development (he was head of system development for Omega Research and is currently writing a series of articles for Active Trader magazine), the fact that Tom chose these three strategies to present in his book gives me confidence that these strategies will make money if properly applied. (I would have given the book five stars if it had included Easy Language code)

Playing for Keeps in Stocks and Futures offers traders three winning strategies for trading stocks and futures under any market condition and within any timeframe-from one minute to one month. Tom Bierovic details his newly developed trading strategies-First Prize, R2D2, and Triple Play-and shows you how to integrate them with various technical indicators and analytical techniques to create low-risk, high-reward trading opportunities. Bierovic clearly explains the development of each system, lists the rules, and provides real-world examples from a wide variety of stocks and futures in several timeframes to illustrate how and why each strategy works so well. With these lessons, you'll quickly learn how to use Bierovic's original strategies to enter, manage, and exit your trades profitably. This complete guide to stock and futures trading opens with a brief introduction to price swings, impulse waves, corrective waves, and critical points and explains how the extreme and continuous variation in the duration and magnitude of price swings makes it possible for traders to speculate profitably. It also reveals the three components of a complete trading strategy-setups, entries, and exits-and how you should use them when trading with First Prize, R2D2, or Triple Play. Before entering into an in-depth discussion of these three winning trading strategies, Playing for Keeps in Stocks and Futures explains the tools used in them including: breakouts to new highs and lows, directional movement index spread (DMI spread), exponential moving averages (EMAs), Fibonacci retracement zones, Japanese candlestick charts, moving average convergence-divergence (MACD), parabolic stops, trendlines, true range and average true range (ATR).In explaining his three new trading strategies-First Prize, R2D2, and Triple Play-Bierovic breaks down each strategy into its setup, entry, and exit components and illustrates how to implement each strategy through charts, graphs, and vivid examples from both the stock and futures markets. Most importantly, you'll learn the unique qualities of each strategy and understand how the three strategies taken together can profit in any market conditions.(First Prize trades first pullbacks; R2D2 trades subsequent pullbacks; Triple Play trades trend reversals.)Take advantage of the tremendous opportunities offered to you by trading with First Prize, R2D2, and Triple Play. With these three strategies in your trading arsenal, you too will soon be playing for keeps in stocks and futures.Tom Bierovic, President of the Synergy Trading Group, has been trading stocks and futures successfully since 1971. Tom is also a popular and respected speaker: he has presented highly rated seminars on technical analysis and trading at major conferences throughout the United States and in more than 40 countries on six continents. Futures magazine, Futures World News, and Technical Analysis of Stock & Commodities magazine have all published in-depth interviews with Tom, and he is featured in the book Real People, Real Traders by Ruggiero and Toghraie. The Nature of Trends: Strategies and Concepts for Successful Investing and Trading (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

Trend identification is such a difficult art. Some think a simple moving average is enough, others use complex formulas, some just eye ball the charts. Barros instead uses his own system, based on disregarding irrelevant price info (such as a false new low), and instead looking for signs of an aging trend that is start to have new force pushed behind it. His objective isn't to pick the exact bottom, instead its to wait and see how a trend develops according to his wave system, then make a high probability entry point at a solid junction where he can manage his risk v reward. This type of thinking for trend changes and identification is far superior to the standard MA crossover type systems that exist, because it takes into account pressure that both the sellers and buyer are applying to the price movements.
His ideas and formulas do take some time to process on any trend, so don't think its a book written for those who want a simplistic solution. The great part about this book is you can truly build a workable system with its ideas alone. A lot of other books leave out key information, letting the reader seek out the missing pieces. Barros does no such thing, he gives you everything you need (so long as you can understand it) to build a solid long/intermediate term trading system.
One disappointment for me was the lack of info on day trading or very short term trades. I'm sure this was not by accident, Barros seems to know a lot about the day time frame and I'm sure he'll release another book with the day time frame perspective. It would have been nice to have a chapter on day time frame trends, but oh well.
If you're a technical trader and can't seem to find those good entry points, this is a good book for you. If your entries are fine, but you'd like a good exit strategy for long term positions, this is a good book for you. If you have just read some beginning TA books, and wish to move to the next level, this is an excellent book for you. If you want someone to explain market theories in relation to market fundamentals, probably look elsewhere. This book is more about a method you take on faith as working.

Today's market participants have a myriad of tools at their disposal. Yet the success rate is that of old - 80% to 90% of traders fail to achieve their financial goals. This book shows traders how to get their investment act together. It covers in detail the three requirements needed for success: Winning psychology, effective money management and a written trading plan with an edge.* The Nature of Trends also provides unique tools (for example the MIDAS tool) that provide low risk trade entry by telling the trader the level at which an entry may be safely effected* Finally, the book provides the "Rule of 3" to manage a trade. These rules allow the trader to take profits and hold on for long-term profits without increasing risk

How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading: Everything You Need to Know to Play Wall Street's Hottest Game Review

How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading: Everything You Need to Know to Play Wall Street's Hottest Game
Average Reviews:

The information in this book is simplistic and (in my opinion) there does indeed seem to be a not-so-hidden agenda aiming readers toward the author's courses and his trading firm. On the other hand, if you don't know much about trading, it's a pretty good introduction to the basics.
Most of the strategies discussed would work equally well simply by using any of the reputable on-line brokerage firms such as Waterhouse or E*Trade for trade executions. In my experience, placing appropriate limit orders with a good online broker results in almost instantaneous executions and if you want to play the level II NASDAQ game, well, good luck! May I say from many years of trading: If you wish to "scalp" or do short term swing trading, or make money on 1/8 point moves at the speed of light, beware! (At least the author warns of the inherent dangers lurking to snag the day trader.)
It's OK to be optimistic, and this book certainly is. It's a little reminiscent of the now-infamous "Wall Street Money Machine" (by a former cab driver who will go un-named) but to be fair, it's not nearly as irresponsible. It IS a GREAT idea to simulate trades before you use real money and, to the author's credit, this rational approach is advocated. Then details get quite fuzzy and the clear message seems to be: For more details, take my course.
In the 1990's I have watched friends and aquaintances jump into the various "hot" and "exciting" arenas of OEX options, option writing and buying, commodity futures, short-term-day trading, and the like. These are not dumb or untrained people, but PhDs in engineering, business professionals and the like. Results have been, to put it kindly, mixed, and one of them got wiped out to the tune of $200K rather efficiently.
My wife was a financial analyst for a Fortune 500 company and I have been a trader for many years. Now that I am retired from my engineering career, I have lots of time to dedicate to the craft of trading...I choose the word "craft" deliberately...and my advice to those who "have a passion for trading" is: Take a cold bath for the passion, learn as much as you can as long as you can, and then start with teeny trades, one at a time. Maybe one day I'll actually meet somebody who was an instant success in this challenging area, but I haven't yet.

All About Stock Market Strategies : The Easy Way To Get Started
Average Reviews:

This dual authored 249-page book McGraw-Hill paperback covers different investment styles. It is divided into 10 chapters and includes a 15-page appendix of on-line investing resources, and 100 useful Websites, as well as a 9-page glossary. One unique feature is the inclusion of Psychological Quotient (PQ) Charts that can help readers ascertain their investment style and, thereby increase their odds on selecting the most appropriate investments.
The authors put forth the theory that if an investing strategy does not fit a person's personality that he/she will not stick with it for very long. Therefore, they provide a selection of currently used investing strategies together with the personality traits needed to execute the strategy successfully.
According to the authors, the investing process encompasses stock selection, timing of entry and exit points and portfolio management (asset allocation, number of holdings). However, they point out that the strategies for picking investment vehicles depends upon the investor's style of investing.
The authors point out that if an investor can use a systematic investing approach while maintaining discipline that he can more than double the annual return compared to random investing.
The authors created PQ charts. They rate each investment style on a scale of 1 to 10 for each of ten personality traits. These traits are: discipline; patience; risk tolerance; reward expectation; volatility tolerance; time horizon; time commitment; quantitative skill; charting skill; and investing confidence.
Nine specific investment styles are reviewed. The four major styles are growth (high risk/high reward); value (hunting for bargains); momentum (where the action is); and technical investing (using charts). There is one chapter on each style and together they cover 100 pages and are the heart of the book.
Each chapter follows the same format by providing the PQ chart personality rankings, anatomy of the types of stocks that fit that category, chart patterns of these stocks, how to screen for stocks, checklist of questions on evaluating stocks, exit and entry strategies, portfolio strategy, a case study, stock chart evaluation checklist, on-line resources, and helpful hints.
Five minor investing styles are portrayed in a separate chapter. They include: fundamental investing (balance sheet review), income investing (dividend payers), hybrid investing (combining styles), active trading (day traders, swing traders, position traders), and style surfing (style now in vogue).
Also provided are market capitalization strategies. Those covered include: large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap strategies. A few advanced strategies are briefly discussed. They include short-selling, market-neutral investing, index trading, option hedging, and global investing.
Each style is explained and a PQ chart is included. A table showing the names of specific index funds and ETFs is also included for each investing style or market cap. This table provides readers with the specific funds to consider based upon their investment profile.
Overall, this book provides readers with a crisply written introduction to understanding the different investing styles, determining their style, help in locating funds that track these styles. This book contains sufficient resources to help investors strengthen their knowledge about investing and the markets. I highly recommend this book to new investors, as well as those who don't have a clue as to what they should be focusing on.

I read this book and agree is it clear and concise - well written. Options are one of the more complex investment vehicles to understand. After signing up with my broker, ThinkOrSwim, and looking at all the features for options trading, and signing up for a trial of some of the option trade recommentations [...] and read some of the recommendations, I quickly realized how basic this book is. If you really get into options trading you will realize this book only scratches the surface of all the strategies out there.

The Complete Guide to Option Selling Review

The Complete Guide to Option Selling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A good read for those interested in trading options from a "net seller's" position. But a "complete guide" it ain't. Far from it.
The view from the authors is very narrow and they make unqualified assertions that their perspective is the only possible way to trade options profitably. (There are many professionals who make a living operating from a net buyer position as well.)
I really believe the authors completely skip the over any discussion of winning trading principles and focus soley on an argument for selling vs. buying options. There is risk both ways and the lack of a proper risk management discussion leaves a glaring hole in an otherwise good book.
Too much emphasis on selling naked positions. Spreads are briefly discussed but the only one recommended is a ratio write which still leaves exposure to naked positions. Eventually the worst happens in all types of trading, and those with naked short exposure holding overnight positions in options markets will experience something between a serious setback and complete ruin when it does.
It's a well-written and enjoyable book, but take it with a grain of salt.

The Exchange-Traded Funds Manual (Wiley Finance) Review

The Exchange-Traded Funds Manual (Wiley Finance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gary Gastineau, a managing director at Nuveen Investments and the author of The Options Manual (1988), has written the most detailed account available in print of open-ended exchange-traded funds: how they work, what are their distinctive characteristics, who trades them (largely, specialists, market makers, and hedge funds), who owns them (largely, brokerage firms clearing and carrying the ETF shares for specialists, market makers, or hedge funds), and what are their advantages and disadvantages over other sorts of investment for various investors.
This is no gripping page-turner, in the league of Jack Schwager's "Wizards" series. But it doesn't need to be. Mr. Gastineau's manual is directed chiefly at investment advisers and financial planners as a reference volume, and it serves that purpose quite well. Advisers and planners, and of course their clients, face a bewildering variety of issues pertaining to these relatively new vehicles-issues of tax efficiency, risk management, trading costs and spreads, etc. In many offices, this book will be a welcome aid in sorting out all of that.

This book has some great information on how to trade Indexes. It is broken out into sections, so if you are new to options it will walk you through the basics of what an option is and the different option strategies that are used for markets that are trending either up, down, or sideways (no movement). Unlike playing stock, If you are a savy options player you can make money no matter what the market does.
If you are a more advanced options trader you can skip past the basic chapters to read about the different indexes that are available to trade and how you can leverage indexes where the underlying is based on Gold, Treasury Bills or Foreign Markets.
This is one of the best Options Books I have ever purchased and if you are a serious options investor it is a must have for your library. I had to write the review becuase, if I kept this gem to myself it would do disservice to the Authors and I want to encourage them to release future editions of this book.

Trading Without Gambling: Develop a Game Plan for Ultimate Trading Success (Wiley Trading) Review

Trading Without Gambling: Develop a Game Plan for Ultimate Trading Success (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is in the top eight out of the over one hundred stock trading books I have read. It presents one of the most important principles of successful trading: DO NOT GAMBLE, ONLY TAKE TRADES WITH A HIGH PROBABILITY OF MAKING MONEY. Author Marcel Link covers in great detail all the areas that a stock trader needs for success in the markets.
First he explains the importance of having a detailed trading plan:
1. Entering a trade
2. Exiting a trade
3. Stop placement
4. Position sizing
5. Money management parameters
6. What to trade
7. Trading time frames
8. Back testing
9. Performance review
10. Risk vs. Reward
In two areas of the book he writes about how even though great traders have a huge amount of differences about them they all share one common trait:Discipline. Whatever your trading style you must have the discipline to follow your trading plan by taking your wins while they are there, cutting your losses when it is time, and never trade to large a position and risk to much of your capital.
He touches on some of the key aspects of trading strategies, but his main point is whether you trade based on technical indicators or fundamentals you must trade a proven system that has been back tested and once you make your system rules, follow them.
The author advises focusing on one market and really know how your market or specific stock trades. He believes you can really hurt your performance watching commodities, futures, bonds, or to many individual stocks, and having to many positions on at the same time. I agree.
You will receive advice to keep the right perspective and always ask yourself "If I did not have this position on would I buy now"? Try to look over your own shoulder while in a trade and give yourself advice like you are trying to advise a friend's trading.
I really liked how Mr. Link said that you should avoid over trading and you should not always either be long or short a stock, that no position was a position in itself. (I had to follow this "no position" mantra in my major account in 2008 being unable to get a feel for any trend or support and resistance levels and saved myself from huge losses).
The author shares his personal trading rules, key principles for successful trading, favorite books and magazines. This book is a treasure test of information and advice from a real 20 year veteran trader who has done very well for himself and is sharing his knowledge with us. This is not a gamble, buy the book and use its principles and you will win in trading.

Many people perceive trading as nothing more than a gamble. But there are still people who consistently make money trading. How do they do it? They've learned to separate gambling from trading. And the way they do this, says author Marcel Link, is by developing a proper plan. In Trading Without Gambling, Link shows how to create and use a sound game plan to improve every aspect of trading–including finding trades, timing, knowing how much to trade, where to exit, and how to adjust risk–while leaving very little to gambling.

There are number of good books on behaviorial finance/economics but this is the first book I've come across that pulls all of the key themes together in a straightforward, comprehensible manner and then effectively bridges over to how it relates to technical analysis. For my 'fundamental' colleaugues who ask me 'how do I learn about technical analysis?" I always say "you need to study behaviorial finance first" but the problem has been that there are perhaps a half dozen books that I reccomend. Now there is one book that pulls it all together that's written by a trader, not an academic or a strategist. Believe me, there is a difference. Even if you have a working understanding of BF, I would still recommend the book because of this distinction.

100 Years of Wall Street Review

100 Years of Wall Street
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book, rich with wonderful old photos, gives a concise history of the last 100 years of the financial culture that has come to be known as Wall Street. A good blend of text, photos, and charts make this book interesting to the non-financial reader.
The author divided the book into decades and each chapter outlined the changes that occurred over those years.
At the beginning of the last century, Wall Street was known for its lack of financial regulation regarding trades. Scandals and outright swindles abounded. Four years after the Crash of 1929, FDR's administration passed nationwide banking and securities laws to make sure that this kind of disaster did not happen again.
Unfortunately, the real and distasteful inner workings of Wall Street were revealed in the Senate hearings. An SEC commissioner called investment bankers "financial termites". This knowledge scared investors away for the next 20 years.
In the early 50s, investing became popular with middle class investors for the first time in a generation, and mutual funds were developed after being gone for 30 years.
The 60s brought the birth of the modern mergers and acquisitions business in the U.S, and the days of small brokerage firms were coming to an end.
The 70s brought extensive reforms concerning commissions while the 80s were the years of junk bonds, insider trading scandals, and the savings and loan crisis.
The author called the 80s the decade of greed and the 90s the decade of boom. The Internet has brought about a totally new way of trading stocks and has made up-to-the-minute financial news available to everyone.
The changes in the last 100 years on Wall Street have been phenomenal, mirroring the technological changes in our society.

A Fool and His Money: The Odyssey of an Average Investor (Wiley Investment Classics) Review

A Fool and His Money: The Odyssey of an Average Investor (Wiley Investment Classics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mr. Rothschild did something in this book that you should never do. He took a year off to learn how to invest, and looked into every financial category available. As a result, he was soon inundated with advice that he often followed. Usually, he didn't understand the risks of what he was doing, and he almost always ended up making costly and unnecessary mistakes. You will find this book a funny cautionary tale about the relevance of keeping it simple and focusing on what's important.
The book is filled with short bits of advice that give you a flavor for its content.
"Never buy the June call nor sell the October put simultaneously, unless you know what they are." This is a reference to a strategy for making money in very volatile stocks. The stock he used was not volatile enough, and he lost on the position.
"'Expert' advice does not agree." So who can you believe?
Mr. Rothchild's downfall was that he is an obviously intelligent, curious person who was too good at finding sources of information. Along the way, he met more different investment brokers, security analysts, professional portfolio managers, market makers, commodity traders, and options experts than you can shake a stick at. Although no one held his hand into a fire, he often tried out an idea that he heard about along the way. The salespeople were all trained to let the investor do whatever he wanted, so he was able to get himself into deep water in the process of trying these things. Someone should have pointed out that he could have learned the same lessons by simply taking a theoretical position on paper, and tracking the results.
One hilarious sequence has him changing hotels during a vacation to avoid the margin calls that came every few hours. He didn't want his wife to find out that he had raided the household funds to float the first margin call. He could not meet the second one.
All the time this is going on, he has been telling his wife and friends how well he is doing. That was technically true for awhile, but did not last long.
Soon, his losses are so large that he was embarrassed to let anyone know. "The larger the sum you've lost, the smaller the sums you'll worry about." So he became incredibly stingy in every other part of his life.
Meanwhile, his wife's account was doing very well with being handled by a stock broker that Mr. Rothchild decided not to use. This made him feel even worse.
Then, the crash in October 1987 happened, and his wife's money was slashed, too. It was a tough year for the Rothchild family, all the way around.
After reading this book, you'll be ready for John Bogle and his Common Sense about Mutual Funds. With this information, you can match the market inexpensively, spend little time on investing, and have limited risk of taking a large, permanent loss. Sleeping well is the best revenge.
After you read this book, consider your own psychology. How good are you at making rational decisions in an area where the value of what you buy can go up and down wildly? Are you likely to be attracted to the overly complicated parts of investing? Are you good at containing risk? Mr. Rothchild's intelligence and access did him more harm than good. How can you apply his experience profitably to your own situation?
Protect your capital against losses for the best results!

The Options Strategist: How to Invest and Trade Equity-Related Options

I've bought and sold many options using a variety of strategies. I enjoy reading as much as possible on options strategies because of the complexity of the subject. The author writes in a very clear logical sequence starting with Options 101 and then rapidly moves on to the more advanced strategies. He doesn't lose you in technical terms but keeps your interest as he walks through Options 401 (more advanced), and onto the more complex stuff. If you want to understand all of the "greek" options stuff, he explains it in an understandable format. Most options books I read get too generic and I lose interest but this book was different and I actually enjoyed it. I have 5 options books on my shelf right now and this one is the best of the group by far.

The third level has a substantial section on Elliott Wave. I have read other books on Elliott, but this book was in my opinion the best written. Mr. Poser made a difficult subject much easier to digest. The real strength here is in discussing what NOT to do when using Elliott Wave- by keeping these tips in mind you will find you can readily apply the techniques to charts from various financial markets.
I highly recommend this book to anyone taking the CMT exam, especially those who don't use Elliott Wave in their trading and/or analysis.

I believe Cooper wrote this book in response to the huge demand of his first book. The techniques discussed are nothing new. They are just a reflection of the ones in Hit & Run 1. I did enjoy Hit & Run 1, however.

I first balked at the high price of this book. It didn't matter that it was written by professional futures trader, George Angell. I bought it and studied the different spread trades that he dedicates a chapter each to. This book will be useful for years to come from taking these trades. The price is well worth it in just one or two contract spreads.
