The Nature of Trends: Strategies and Concepts for Successful Investing and Trading (Wiley Trading) Review

The Nature of Trends: Strategies and Concepts for Successful Investing and Trading (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

Trend identification is such a difficult art. Some think a simple moving average is enough, others use complex formulas, some just eye ball the charts. Barros instead uses his own system, based on disregarding irrelevant price info (such as a false new low), and instead looking for signs of an aging trend that is start to have new force pushed behind it. His objective isn't to pick the exact bottom, instead its to wait and see how a trend develops according to his wave system, then make a high probability entry point at a solid junction where he can manage his risk v reward. This type of thinking for trend changes and identification is far superior to the standard MA crossover type systems that exist, because it takes into account pressure that both the sellers and buyer are applying to the price movements.
His ideas and formulas do take some time to process on any trend, so don't think its a book written for those who want a simplistic solution. The great part about this book is you can truly build a workable system with its ideas alone. A lot of other books leave out key information, letting the reader seek out the missing pieces. Barros does no such thing, he gives you everything you need (so long as you can understand it) to build a solid long/intermediate term trading system.
One disappointment for me was the lack of info on day trading or very short term trades. I'm sure this was not by accident, Barros seems to know a lot about the day time frame and I'm sure he'll release another book with the day time frame perspective. It would have been nice to have a chapter on day time frame trends, but oh well.
If you're a technical trader and can't seem to find those good entry points, this is a good book for you. If your entries are fine, but you'd like a good exit strategy for long term positions, this is a good book for you. If you have just read some beginning TA books, and wish to move to the next level, this is an excellent book for you. If you want someone to explain market theories in relation to market fundamentals, probably look elsewhere. This book is more about a method you take on faith as working.

Today's market participants have a myriad of tools at their disposal. Yet the success rate is that of old - 80% to 90% of traders fail to achieve their financial goals. This book shows traders how to get their investment act together. It covers in detail the three requirements needed for success: Winning psychology, effective money management and a written trading plan with an edge.* The Nature of Trends also provides unique tools (for example the MIDAS tool) that provide low risk trade entry by telling the trader the level at which an entry may be safely effected* Finally, the book provides the "Rule of 3" to manage a trade. These rules allow the trader to take profits and hold on for long-term profits without increasing risk

The Money Changers: A Guided Tour Through Global Currency Markets

This was a very enjoyable quick book to read about the internal workings of the foreign currency exchange markets. It is not intended for FX daytraders, but traders should find it interesting. It is not intended for academics, but a grad student in a related field will likely find it to be at just the right level of abstraction (not too deep in the weeds and not too superficial). It is mainly written in the form of polished-up interviews, and the author does a great job of breathing life into the representative players he portrays for these markets. Very well done.

There are less then 80 pages about sentiment indicators in this book. Fundamental Analysis, Technical Analysis, Elliott and Fibo make the rest. In 80 pages, the author talks about 4 sentiment indicators: Magazine Covers, Headline News, COT Report, and the FXCM SSI.
I have paid over 50 USD (with shipping) for information that I can find on the internet for free.

Turning Losing Forex Trades into Winners: Proven Techniques to Reverse Your Losses (Wiley Trading) Review

Turning Losing Forex Trades into Winners: Proven Techniques to Reverse Your Losses (Wiley Trading)

Target market
-----------------
Regarding profitability, there are two types of traders; those making and those losing money. If you are losing money (i.e. your strategy has a negative expectancy or faulty execution) then this text CANNOT HELP YOU. In this circumstance, cost averaging as expressed in this text will cause you to lose money faster since the premise is to make up for losses on the next or the next few trades. This is what is known as a Martingale type system (see Wikepedia for info on Martingale). As Van Tharp always says, the anti Martingale approach works.
If you are making money with your system, i.e. positive expectancy, then I would ponder one thing about taking the advice in this text and that is ... Why would I alter my money management system because I've lost a trade? Certainly my money management approach will take into account losses and still be able to steadily increase my portfolio. Additionally, increasing your risk on the next trade assumes that your next trade is more likely to be successful than your last trade. Well, free Internet research will show that this premise is incorrect. Additionally, cost averaging is dangerous and may actually cause a good system to become marginal and a marginal system to lose money. Please read good money management texts for factual evidence to back up my claim (Van K Tharp etc).
Shallow
--------
With regard to the text's shallowness, I can only say that it has no clear strategies. In fact, even the cost averaging that the book purports to teach has been handled in a very sketchy fashion with ideas on how to effect it strewn throughout the text in sentences such as "when suffering two or more losses in sequence, I do not attempt to recover everything with one trade, but spread it out over the next three or four entries" (page 101). Why not the next five or six entries, or seven our eight or one or two. Where is the rational behind using the next "three or four" entries. This statement alone should clue newcomers to trading to the fact that cost averaging is very dangerous.
The title is very appealing to those searching for the truth. The closest you will find in this text is the mention of their proprietary ROI (River Oscillator Indicator). I know nothing of the indicator but from the author you get the feeling that it is very good bordering on miraculous. You'll have to pay for it. Nothing wrong with that. However, this book does not teach you how to use it. If interested, contact Concorde Forex Group, find out the cost of the indicator per month and any other costs such as training to use the indicator. Then make a reasonable decision as to whether or not it is worth it to you.
In closing, if you have a propensity for gambling, (which I don't recommend) then I suggest you review the freely available techniques available on the net. In fact, they will even give you detailed methods of how much to risk, how much to increase your risk for each subsequent loss and when to quit (when you have reached your draw down limit), which is more specific information than contained in this text.
I live outside the US, so lucky for Amazon that it's not cost effective to return this book.

An effective way to reverse a trade's fortuneAlmost all trading books focus on "winning" trades. But winning trades can be hard to come by, especially when you're just starting out. Turning Losing FOREX Trades into Winners takes a look at this discipline from a different angle, examining effective methods for dealing with trades that are in a losing position. First, it guides the trader through the various steps of determining if a trade is with or against the overall trend. Then, it explains how to decide when a trade should be closed or left open. While this reliable resource is filled with in-depth insights and expert advice that will help readers gain a better understanding of today's FOREX market, it also contains hundreds of chart examples that will provide step-by-step instructions on how traders can recover from losses.

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading) Review

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

The Intermarket analysis is poorly covered in current literature, with few books of historical data and boring details.
Instead in this book the Author, who has mastered the Intermarket analysis, shares discoveries on market correlations, and helps reader to develop indicators and strategies for Etf, Futures and Stocks.
This book makes easier to understand today markets, and I suggest it for intraday and both long and short term trading. It is not for fiction traders who bet on markets direction, but for people really trading their own accounts, studying a lot of technical analysis and pondering experts ideas.
The book is written in plain English, contains useful info on international markets, and a lot of MetaStock (MS) codes to help users to design (or improving their) trading systems, even you aren't the best programmer. Users of other technical software can easily develop their trading strategies, because in the Appendix there are the MS formulas and Test Specifications for all systems.
Reading this book grow up your fever to go to your pc for studying the correlations Author disclosed, and training with his trading strategies !
Minus : discussion on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms are very introductory (but these are very specific topics). Author limited his Intermarket analysis to major markets, and not all exchange products are covered.
Plus : the best book on the subject I ever red : the Intermarket concepts behind trading ideas are well explained. Trading strategies are deeply tested. Author insights help to really make money in today markets. Good value for price : many systems described would cost hundred dollars to buy !

Day Trading the Currency Market: Technical and Fundamental Strategies To Profit from Market Swings (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

I have had the pleasure of seeing Kathy Lien speak twice at Forex seminars. She is very intelligent and has a wonderful personality. You will find some interesting and informative content in this book that can be useful in your educational path in Forex. But it is important to keep in mind that the book is written not by a trading entrepreneur but by a representative of one of the largest Forex brokers. To become a successful trader it is essential to recognize the vast difference in agenda between winning traders and brokers. The entire industry is driven by brokers and almost all material available on learning to trade is tied directly or indirectly to the broker industry whose agenda is to teach trading strategies that make the most money for THEM. Because the industry is unregulated, brokers are able to get away with many less than ethical practices. For instance, it is ironic that another reader mentions how Kathy covers the subject of the "carry trade" in detail. The last time I spoke with FXCM I discovered to my shock that they had adopted the policy of charging a negative interest regardless of which direction one was trading which I believe should be criminal. But there is no regulating agency to prevent them from doing that. Neither the CFTC nor the NFA actually regulate the activity of Forex brokers. Some other brokers, refuse to publish their interest rates or display them in their trading platforms so they can change them behind the scenes every day according to what benefits them the most. You may notice that others have a negative interest that is twice as much as their positive interest. All of this is part of the overall objective to keep the majority of traders focused on day trading which makes the most money for brokers. Studying trading material published by brokers is like asking a casino owner how to gamble. Most of the trading "mentors" are also introducing brokers who make money when you trade. A word to the wise, is that if you intend to succeed in Forex trading consider looking to sources of information that are not tied to any broker such as other traders who have learned to master this arcane art.

A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics: How to Profit Using Pivot Points, Candlesticks and Other Indicators (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

I agree with a couple of posts that say this is a very basic book, and that most of the information could be found for free on the internet. I would go as far as to say that some information would be better if read on the internet.
The examples about pivots (the key part of the book), one chart after another were not easy to follow. The section on TA was woefully lacking. The author has a section on Gann theory, and more or less advises to go buy the book that Gann wrote. As it turns out, there is some pretty rich information about Gann on the web.
My biggest pet peeve about this book were the continual subliminal references (advertisements) to the author's subscription based website. Besides that, I did not like the blatent plugging of the people who praised his book on the back cover. It's okay for an author to put their website on the back of the book. If the information stands on it's own then I can go to the website to learn more. What's not cool is to give vauge trading strategies, then give some glowing account of how your subscription newsletter called the shots.
I did give the book two stars, which means I wasn't totally disapointed. He does stress a couple of good points regarding pivots, but it's all pretty basic beginner stuff.

I am a visual learner, and the illustrations/figures in the book are helpful in explaining key concepts. The book finally made evident to me the importance of understanding risk in trading. I've read over and over things like "keep your losses small, and let your runners win" but I never really understood why I could have a trading system that wins 80% of the time and still have a losing system. This book spells out the interrelatedness of profit targets, stop losses, percent profitable, average win and average loss. It provides a clear, systematic approach to system development that includes some of the realities of trading (like if it looks too good to be true on paper it most certainly will be in live trading). The book also provides several strategy examples that were really helpful to me.

New Trading Systems and Methods (Wiley Trading)

Many people refer to the Achelis book for simple, straight-forward descriptions of technical analysis tools. I too have it on my primary bookshelf. However, lately, more often than not, I find myself reaching for Kaufman's book to get good background on the various ways of technically analysing trading options. He has chapters devoted to practically every indicator type you may encounter: chart reading, events, regressions, trending, momentum, oscillators, seasonality, cycles, patterns, multiple time frames, and advanced techniques. He then goes into some details regarding system testing, practical considerations, risk control, and diversification. As a wrap up, he provides some end-notes for the mathematically inclined.
There appear to be traders who will sit at their screen all day and watch patterns. I think many who wrote many of the recent reviews may fall into this category, and didnt' rank the book very highly. On the other hand, there are other traders who may wish to design Automated Trading Scenarios and need some math to flesh out their trading strategies. It is for these types of traders to whom this book is devoted. I think you'll find a wealth of ideas you can mix and match to make a trading strategy uniquely your own.
However, technical anlysis and automated trading strategy design takes much work and energy. A good chunk of statistics is practically mandatory (which the book doesn't delve into). This book fulfills only a portion of the overall knowledge someone will need build a winning trading strategy.
I'll give it two thumbs up as it provides excellent details on the spectrum of technical analysis and provides references for the times you wish to flesh out the details.

Mastering the Currency Market: Forex Strategies for High and Low Volatility Markets Review

Mastering the Currency Market: Forex Strategies for High and Low Volatility Markets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I trade futures, stocks and options, with futures now making up the bulk of my trading. I am very interested in learning currencies and gaining additional flexibility in my trading. I came across this book and saw it was a new publication so I pre-ordered. I assumed it would have the latest inside information on currencies and how best to trade them. After the all, the title is "Mastering the Currency Market, Forex Strategies for High and Low Volatility Markets". I have to say that I was sorely disappointed.
The editorial review says the book is divided into these sections:
* The basics of trading currencies
* Fundamental analysis of price valuation
* Technical analysis and trading charts
* Trading philosophy and psychological discipline
* Volatility and risk management
The first 2 sections are the only parts of the book that offer anything unique to currencies. And out of a 292-page book, these sections end after only the first 48 pages. The rest of the book is a basic technical analysis indicator training manual with some candlestick signals thrown in the mix. Starting with simple candlesticks, covering basic chart patterns and looking at multiple time frames for trade confirmation. The book ends with a short treatise on psychology and trading journals, subjects that have entire works dedicated solely to them. There are no unique "Forex" strategies, just basic technical analysis education.
Chapter 1 discusses the basics, names of currency pairs, market times, etc.
Chapter 2 although seemingly lacking real depth may give the most insight to someone interested in mastering currencies. It discusses economic factors affecting currencies and the price movement. There is a handy chart showing economic reports and the usual effect they have on individual currencies.
There is no detailed insight to the individual currency trading instruments or to the Forex market in general. Interesting, the title suggests strategies for high and low volatility. Looking in the book's index, volatility is discussed on one page, in one small paragraph, and it is a less than an introductory discussion. Which Forex strategies work best in which type of market? Where are the high and low volatility examples? What are the best pairs to trade? How do we hedge? Is there any currency correlation? We may never know.
It would have been simpler for the authors to write the first 2 chapters and then add a page that says, "Apply standard technical indicator trading techniques to the currency market." and end the book there.
If you were a beginner trader, I would say you could add this to your library. However there are hundreds, maybe thousands of technical analysis books on the market, many better than this. We surely do not need another one.
Perhaps a better name for the book would have been "A Beginners Guide to Technical Analysis: With some Forex pairs used as examples." Had that been the name, I would have saved myself the return shipping. 2 stars for basic technical analysis, 1 star for any real Forex insight.

The Ed Ponsi Forex Playbook: Strategies and Trade Set-Ups (Wiley Trading) Review

The Ed Ponsi Forex Playbook: Strategies and Trade Set-Ups (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an Ed Ponsi fan. However, I think he may have inadvertently misled people with his choice of title and cover art. In particular, the subtitle -- Strategies and Trade Set-Ups -- along with the sports diagrams on the cover, imply that he's going to get down with some powerful set-ups and management techniques. The trade set-ups consist of trading off 10 and 20 day moving averages, and the management techniques consist of the option of adding to a winning trade when it retraces. Duh.
Furthermore, there is quite a lot of rank beginner stuff, for example, an explanation of currency pairs, pip value, lot size, etc. I don't have much patience with that sort of thing. There is plenty of introductory Forex material readily available, and I don't see why so many authors seem to feel the need to pad their books with what their readers already know. It's like buying a book on computer programming that contains detailed instructions on how to turn on the computer or what a hard drive is.
Oddly enough, in a book that explains pip value, there is a chapter on trading other people's money. I think he tried to be all things to all people, from those who started trading a demo last week to the guy who wants to start a hedge fund. I don't think it comes off very well, especially in a 200 page book.
The meat of the book -- the strategy -- consists of various sources of information that can give you a head's up on currency strength. We're talking the COT Report and such things, some which are not so widely known by intermediate level traders. It's good information to have. It wasn't what I was expecting, though. And of course, it's still a crap-shoot. Was the crowd right, or was the crowd wrong? It's the same old question with the same old answer: buy your ticket and take your chances.
The take-away is that Ed feels the real money is in long-term trading as opposed to day-trading. Certainly if you are trading moving averages, you need to let your profits run. Personally, I hate trading moving averages -- or anything that wiggles, for that matter -- and no day will dawn when I'm willing to eat a 100 pip stop.
Buy the book anyway. There are useful and important nuggets and the book is worth the money. Just don't expect trade set-ups that you haven't heard about a hundred times before.

This book will be helpful to those seeking an introduction to the interrelatedness of the currency, commodity, equity and fixed income markets. The book is well written and easy to read. However, I would not suggest the book to a person with no technical, economic or financial background.
I have followed Mr. Laidi's currency outlook for over a decade now both on TV and in print, and can honestly say that I have yet to come across another analyst with the foresight of Mr. Laidi (he called the bear market and USD collapse when the rest of Wall St. were still believing in an unending bull market).
Although many of his correlations referenced in this book are obviously backward looking, it does teach traders to take a global market perspective before narrowing down to specific currency pairs. I felt his explanation of the FED, under both Greenspan and Bernanke, really did a good job on a very difficult topic, as many traders, like myself, really don't understand the different weapons the Fed and other central banks posses.
Equally useful and informative was his chapter on the effect of interest rates, there isn't enough space for me to go into it, instead I will let you gather the pearls of wisdom for yourself.
Mr. Laidi finally concludes that some of the historical tendencies are currently being challenged and that only time will tell if a new relationship has emerged or if history will again be proven right. Pick up this book if you want to read the work of an original thinker at the top of his craft. Whether you trade FX or another market, I think you will benefit from Mr. Laidi's insight.

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Wiley Trading) Review

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

I don't even know Mr. Bulkowski, but I felt compelled to write this review. One particular reviewer points out a few apparent discrepancies in this 672 page volume of research. It does not matter whether you are an author or have been published in trading-related magazines.
The reviewer sarcastically poses that since the "rectangle bottom" stats on page 659 portray a zero faulure rate, that traders can get rich and never lose money!
If you truly read the entire text, including Mr. Bulkowski's opening remarks that define his fresh statistical-analysis approach, then everything falls into place.
Furthermore, the author addresses the "zero loss stat" for the rectangle formation on pages 440 and 444. He states that the "sample size" was small for this pattern and said: "Let me emphasize that because I did not find any failures of rectangle patterns with upside breakouts does not mean there are none."
This is a good and comprehensive book with a very fresh statistical approach for analyzing classic (and newer) bar chart formations. There is a wealth of information addressing each of the many patterns. It is offered up to the reader as copious amounts of quantified data that any trader/investor can draw from to incorporate into his or her own trading.
I too am an author, and I trade stocks full-time for a living. This book is a great resource and fits in the top 15 T.A. books of which I own roughly 300.
Yeah, he called a "dogi" a "hanging man." To me that doesn't detract from the other 671 pages.
Buy it, read it and use it!

This comprehensive new edition is a must-have reference if you're a technical investor or trader. Place your order today.
"The most complete reference to chart patterns available. It goes where no one has gone before. Bulkowski gives hard data on how good and bad the patterns are. A must-read for anyone that's ever looked at a chart and wondered what was happening." -- Larry Williams, trader and author of Long-Term Secrets to Short-Term Trading

Great product if you need to remember definitions of certain terms and how things work in different types of markets. The technical analysis section is very insightful about trends and trend lines, but it does discuss any other type of indicators. A definite beginners book.

The Complete Guide to Building a Successful Trading Business Review

The Complete Guide to Building a Successful Trading Business

Put simply I found this book to be exactly what it says; a complete guide to building a successful trading business.
The layout and design are clear and concise, the material constantly relevant and the narrative always thought provoking. Throughout I was struck by the meticulous detail especially on the adminstrative areas like contingency planning (for most people these are the boring and most overlooked areas of trading - hint - that it's so exhaustively covered here should be telling you something). If you are someone who is just looking for quick fixes or holy grail systems this book will not give you what you want, it will however tell you what you need to hear.
The section on simulation was particularly useful for me being an area I personally needed to better understand and again the detail is extensive. I am also someone who likes to dip in to books for reference material afterwards and the way this book has been designed and written it is perfect for that as the author has been very careful to cross-reference relevant topics elsewhere in the book so each area is completely covered.
In all I found this to be an excellent addition to my trading library.
