This book has some great information on how to trade Indexes. It is broken out into sections, so if you are new to options it will walk you through the basics of what an option is and the different option strategies that are used for markets that are trending either up, down, or sideways (no movement). Unlike playing stock, If you are a savy options player you can make money no matter what the market does.
If you are a more advanced options trader you can skip past the basic chapters to read about the different indexes that are available to trade and how you can leverage indexes where the underlying is based on Gold, Treasury Bills or Foreign Markets.
This is one of the best Options Books I have ever purchased and if you are a serious options investor it is a must have for your library. I had to write the review becuase, if I kept this gem to myself it would do disservice to the Authors and I want to encourage them to release future editions of this book.

I've bought and sold many options using a variety of strategies. I enjoy reading as much as possible on options strategies because of the complexity of the subject. The author writes in a very clear logical sequence starting with Options 101 and then rapidly moves on to the more advanced strategies. He doesn't lose you in technical terms but keeps your interest as he walks through Options 401 (more advanced), and onto the more complex stuff. If you want to understand all of the "greek" options stuff, he explains it in an understandable format. Most options books I read get too generic and I lose interest but this book was different and I actually enjoyed it. I have 5 options books on my shelf right now and this one is the best of the group by far.

"Options Demystified" is a worthy addition to McGraw-Hill's "Demystified" series, easily living up to its claim of being a self-teaching guide. Hundreds of books have been written on the subject of puts and calls, but this large-format paperback is by far the best I've come across for the aspiring option trader. It is comprehensive, well organized, generously illustrated and easy to understand. The book also includes many quizzes and a "final exam" to help the reader master the material.
The author, Thomas McCafferty, has been around commodities, stocks and options for many years and written numerous books on those subjects. This one not only lays out the basics of the options game, it also condenses much of the author's impressive horse-sense into a very readable and relatively short work (251 pages, plus an excellent index). "Options Demystified" should be on every trader's shelf. Even pros will find some pearls here, including a chapter on "trading philosophy" that's perfectly attuned to today's frothy markets. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone looking for an options primer that is both comprehensive and easy to imbibe.

Exotic Options Trading (The Wiley Finance Series) Review

Exotic Options Trading (The Wiley Finance Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an excellent resource and expose of most exotic options traded around the globe. It cuts to the really essential parts of the options quickly. No in-depth math analysis. De Weert lists the essential formulas and payoff functions in a readable and understandable format. He also gives some practical hints and explains some pitfalls one should be aware of. Both traders and quants will find this an excellent reference.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Exotic Options Trading (The Wiley Finance Series)

Written by an experienced trader and consultant, Frans de Weert's Exotic Options Trading offers a risk-focused approach to the pricing of exotic options. By giving readers the necessary tools to understand exotic options, this book serves as a manual to equip the reader with the skills to price and risk manage the most common and the most complex exotic options.

De Weert begins by explaining the risks associated with trading an exotic option before dissecting these risks through a detailed analysis of the actual economics and Greeks rather than solely stating the mathematical formulae. The book limits the use of mathematics to explain exotic options from an economic and risk perspective by means of real life examples leading to a practical interpretation of the mathematical pricing formulae.

The book covers conventional options, digital options, barrier options, cliquets, quanto options, outperformance options and variance swaps, and explains difficult concepts in simple terms, with a practical approach that gives the reader a full understanding of every aspect of each exotic option. The book also discusses structured notes with exotic options embedded in them, such as reverse convertibles, callable and puttable reverse convertibles and autocallables and shows the rationale behind these structures and their associated risks.

For each exotic option, the author makes clear why there is an investor demand; explains where the risks lie and how this affects the actual pricing; shows how best to hedge any vega or gamma exposure embedded in the exotic option and discusses the skew exposure.

By explaining the practical implications for every exotic option and how it affects the price, in addition to the necessary mathematical derivations and tools for pricing exotic options, Exotic Options Trading removes the mystique surrounding exotic options in order to give the reader a full understanding of every aspect of each exotic option, creating a useable tool for dealing with exotic options in practice.
"Although exotic options are not a new subject in finance, the coverage traditionally afforded by many texts is either too high level or overly mathematical. De Weert's exceptional text fills this gap superbly. It is a rigorous treatment of a number of exotic structures and includes numerous examples to clearly illustrate the principles. What makes this book unique is that it manages to strike a fantastic balance between the theory and actual trading practice. Although it may be something of an overused phrase to describe this book as compulsory reading, I can assure any reader they will not be disappointed."
—Neil Schofield, Training Consultant and author of Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications

"Exotic Options Trading does an excellent job in providing a succinct and exhaustive overview of exotic options. The real edge of this book is that it explains exotic options from a risk and economical perspective and provides a clear link to the actual profit and pricing formulae. In short, a must read for anyone who wants to get deep insights into exotic options and start trading them profitably."
—Arturo Bignardi

Kraft delivers an easy to understand, descriptive roadmap for an assortment of investor preferences. By profiling three families (each with diverse generational and risk tolerances), Kraft outlines investment mediums to assist the reader in creating extra income opportunities. Although fictional, each family scenario parallels true-to-life questions and challenges faced in the current financial headwinds.
Suitable for beginners, advanced options traders and investors searching for alternative investment vehicles. I have since focused my 401K monies on dividend paying stocks and MLPs.
If you find yourself empowered by possibilities of trading options as I did, you will want to read Kraft's equally insightful book, Trade Your Way to Wealth: Earn Big Profits with No-Risk, Low-Risk, and Measured-Risk Strategies (Wiley Trading). "If you liked his first book, you'll love his second. This book is a truly excellent options introduction. I highly, highly recommend this book.

Options Trading 101: From Theory to Application

This is a quick review of the excellent stock options trading book written by Bill Johnson called Options Trading 101.-johnI had a chance to buy Bills book when I met him in person at an options trading seminar before the book was launched publically.
Bill is one of the traders for a company called Options University which teaches stock options trading. Bill's book hit number one on Amazon just after it launched, so a lot of other people must have thought it looked pretty good too.
I guess the simplest thing I can say about Bill's book is that there is a fully in-depth options trading education within the 449 pages of the book, and if you have the discipline to go through the book slowly, taking notes, you can get an education that others have paid hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars to recieve.
One of my favorite parts of Bill's book are the chapter review quizzes that he gives at the end of each chapter. Like any good teacher who teaches you something and then reviews with you to make sure you got it, Bill does just that with his end of chapter quizzes.
Bill goes from very beginner to rather advanced between the pages of this book and he does it in a pretty simply and easy to understand way, drawing a lot of connections to other real life matters to make understanding the more technical parts of trading a lot easier.
For a $20 book on options trading success, Bill's book is a no-brainer.

McMillan on Options, Second Edition (Wiley Trading) Review

McMillan on Options, Second Edition (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

As a ROP (registered Options principal) I feel I am uniquely qualified to review this book. First, understand that Larry McMillan is considered by many to be the best options mind on Wall Street (sorry Bernie Schaeffer). His knowledge of this less-than-logical derivative investment is the equivalent of Alan Greenspan's knowledge of the economy.
My assessment: this is a good book. McMillan covers virtually every aspect of options trading: history, terms, strategies, volatility, theoretical approaches, etc. I am particularly impressed by Larry's use of historical examples to bring complicated strategies down to basic levels.
This is not to say this is an easy read. An easy investment read is Peter Lynch's "One Up on Wall Street". McMillan on Options is more like a doctor's guide to brain surgery: the pictures are cool but the content can be complicated. Topics covered include spreads (verts, calendar, diagonal), straddles, combos, the greeks (delta, rho, theta, vega and gamma) and strategies that employ these. If volatility is your life, and you hold a hefty position in Rolaids futures, then this book is for you. I have not read a more comprehensive, useable options book. I believe all options traders and speculators should own McMillan on Options.

A good choice for stock option investors despite it mentioning commmodities. This book will overwhelm a beginner, who should start with Charles Caes' great "Tools of the Bear" (which works for bull and bear markets). Far superior to George Fontanills. Caplan is creative, he writes well and gives the studious reader many important tips. I made two pages of notes from this book. With even a little experience, an options investor will truly ascend to a higher level of knowledge and trading mastery with this book.

Options as a Strategic Investment Review

Options as a Strategic Investment

Most people who trade either stocks, options, or futures lose money. This is because they 1) are undercapitalized, 2) have no system or 3) don't understand the instrument they trade. 4) some combination of 1, 2, and 3. This book won't help you if you don't go into the market with enough money, but it will help you develop your own system (after a lot more research) and figure out how to use options to increase returns or limit risk.
This book describes just about every fundamental strategy you could try with options. It covers the total return concept of covered call writing, the pros and cons of option buying, examines various types of spreads (vertical, calendar, and diagonal) and the various delta (price) neutral strategies.
There is some advanced math here (in an appendix), but anyone of average intelligence and stock market knowledge could follow it.
Don't pay attention to those reviewers who trash the book--they have no clue. I constantly refer to this book in order to gain a better understanding of different option strategies. No matter which direction option markets evolve, the information of this book will still apply.

The Rookie's Guide to Options: The Beginner's Handbook of Trading Equity Options Review

The Rookie's Guide to Options: The Beginner's Handbook of Trading Equity Options
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Options are a complicated investment instrument, but if properly understood and implemented, they are far less risky than owning stock or mutual funds. And as a bonus, they are most often more profitable. Trading options, one can choose to be a risky gambler (not recommended) or a conservative income generator.
The trick is understanding options and understanding risk management. If you trade options WITHOUT understanding them, and WITHOUT any risk management implementation, then by default you are a risky gambler. You will be out of money before you know what hit you.
The option world has its own lingo. And there are myriad strategies to sift through before determining which one(s) suit your risk/reward desires. Placing the actual trade orders with your broker requires a thorough understanding and fluency of the lingo, as well as a confident understanding of the strategy you've chosen.
The good news is that this book will actually TEACH you what you need to know to be a conservative income generator with options. I can assure you it is the ONLY book that TEACHES this. I own all the major books on options that have been released in the last five years and this one is by far the best and most practical. And long overdue.
To me, in order for an author to teach options trading, he or she must provide the real world philosophy behind a strategy, real world examples, real world gotchas, real world "how", and most importantly, real world "why". Of all the books I own, this one provides the total package. The others do a good job of perhaps the philosophy and the how, but totally lack the rest. In short, no book until this one teaches the complete knowledge one requires to be successful at option trading for income.
I am a rookie in that I had not actually traded options until studying this book. I am NOT a rookie when it comes to attempting to learn how to trade options. The other books did not leave me confident in my abilities to consistently earn income with options. Thus I didn't make any trades. This book gave me the confidence to start trading AND EARNING INCOME. That point alone truly sums up the value of this book compared to all other books on the shelves. The other books are simply lacking in regard to earning income with options. They are good resources for information but not for implementation.
The author's approach is conservative. You will learn how to manage risk and see that options ARE a good, safe investment instrument if used with conservative strategies and prudent risk management techniques. You'll also learn, perhaps by constructing a spreadsheet on your own (strongly encouraged by me), just how much potential income you can earn. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
However, a strong warning here: You MUST understand and comprehend what you are reading. You can't skim this book and expect to do well. In fact, you'll fail if you skim ANY book on options. Most likely, you'll fail big time after a lucky string because you THOUGHT you understood. If you can't commit to learning, and I mean intensely learning and understanding this book, then please steer clear of options. There are no free rides. You must invest brain power to do well. Recognize that most people do not WANT to invest the brain power required. It's hard. It's intense. It's confounding. It's WORTH THE EFFORT. Eventually it clicks. Decide if you do want to commit, and if so, buy this book. It's the only one you will need to conservatively earn a steady income trading options. If you do invest the brain power, you will be proud of yourself and you'll do well financially with your new knowledge.
I want to add that the author is an experienced floor trader, and a gracious man who has replied to all questions I've asked of him via email. If you are inclined to purchase $2000+ in software and another $2000-5000+ in so called "training" or "education", please save your money and seed your options trading account with it instead. But before making ANY trades, nail down what this book teaches. It is all you need.
FYI, my own trading focuses solely on Credit Spreads (which have their own chapter in the book) and utilizing the author's philosophy on risk management. But I had to understand the ENTIRE book prior to making that decision. You would be wise to do the same before deciding your own direction.

I'd give this book 5 stars for its practicality, but there are a few flaws. Many options books present a Chinese menu of exotic strategies, confusing the reader and probably causing him to lose his money quickly. This book distills all of these strategies down to 4 of the ones that are the most practical for investors and traders, and that in my experience work well in real life. I was put off by the awful title, which is not the main point of the material in the book at all, but I guess the publisher wants to attract some of the get-rich-quick crowd. The clarity and emphasis are uneven. The fifth "bonus strategy" would've best been left out, because most traders would consider it extremely dangerous. On balance, the book's emphasis on profiting from option time decay by using stragegies that are safer than stock ownership greatly outweighs these flaws. You can waste thousands of dollars on options classes and end up with less useful material than is contained in this book.

The Bible of Options Strategies: The Definitive Guide for Practical Trading Strategies Review

The Bible of Options Strategies: The Definitive Guide for Practical Trading Strategies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Guy Cohen lays out just about every option strategy that you could make work, given the right market conditions and your tolerance for risk. I would certainly put this book in the "Reference Book" category -- something that you would take out on occasion to answer a query about how a certain trade is placed or when it's a good strategy to use.
I started out with the intent of reading it from cover to cover. But I have to admit that I ended up skipping a lot of the material after reading the first 100 pages or so because it gets somewhat repetitious. So this indeed makes a good reference book, say, when you hear someone mention a "Long Put Condor" and wonder what it is. Or if you forget what market conditions (volatile, neutral, etc) would be required for a Bear Call Spread to work well. Also, I do appreciate Guy's organization of strategies by Risk/Reward, Direction, Volatility, etc. That makes it easy to get a short list of strategies given your own trading style and the market conditions.
What I found missing that I wish was there is information like how far from Option Expiry should this strategy be placed, what is an optimum range of IV for the underlying stock for each type of strategy, when should the strategy be repaired or exited? How do you repair it, or leg in or out successfully?
Also, I still do not understand what the little charts mean at the end of each strategy. I understand that they represent some kind of profile for each of the greeks, but there's no scale or indicators on the axes, nor can I find an explanation of what the dotted, dashed and solid lines mean. Maybe it's just me, since I've only been trading options for about a year now. If you're an experienced option trader, you'll probably know what they mean.

Generate Thousands in Cash on your Stocks Before Buying or Selling Them: Third Edition Review

Generate Thousands in Cash on your Stocks Before Buying or Selling Them: Third Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was able to triple my trading account in the past 18 months with this book. Although, I did own the first and second editions, it is the third edition that gave me these remarkable results. How did I do this? I followed the stepwise procedure below:
(1) I programmed the scan suggested by the author on pages 357-383 into my stock scanning software to find long trades reversing from a bottom. I also adapted the scan to search for short trades reversing from a top. This is quite easy to do by reversing the stated conditions.
(2) I used the market timing indicator discussed on pages 179-185 to decide whether the general market is turning up or down. The indicators in the book are best used to detect an inflection point in the market which is critical to catch moves early in the trend.
A down signal was given by this indicator in Nov 2007.
(3) When the general market is turning up I run the scan that searches for long trades. I focused only on two high profit setups discussed in the book: VPV reversal and the highly profitable falling rectangle. My reason for focusing on these setups is that not only they have high profit potential, they get you in early in the trend thus reducing the possibility of being stopped out of the trade and keeping drawdown at a minimum.
While VPV reversals are not hard to find, the highly explosive falling rectangles do not come by more than few times a year , but once you find them you can get profits upwards of 50% in a short time.
(4) If the general market is turning down I ran the scan that searched for stocks to short. In this case, however I looked for a rising rectangle pattern which is essentially the opposite of afalling rectangle. I also required that the break below the rectangle be accompanied by a volume spike. Knowing that markets and stocks fall much faster than they rise I would buy puts on the stock at the next strike below the current price. Once that strike price is reached and if the downtrend is still intact I will sell the puts I hold and buy puts at a lower strike and so on.
To show the explosive profits you can get using this technique, I will give a specific example: On 8/21/08 my short search program identified JDSU as a stock falling with a heavy volume spike. On examining the chart a break below a rising rectangle was evident. By buying $7.5 puts when the stock was at $10+ and then selling them when the stock hit $7.5 and buying $5 strike puts and so on until the stock hit $2.5 , my small investment grew by 20 times.
I have taken the advice of the author in my trading "to specialize in specific setups and get good at them to the point where they can be recognized by a glance at the chart".
I waited this long before writing the review since I had read many reviews and even written reviews myself on books without addressing the critical question: did the reviewer make money with ideas in the book. In most cases it is difficult to answer that question, however is this case it was possible since I followed a specific approach suggested in the book and it worked.
My actual rating for the book though is slightly shy of 5 (around 4.75) stars mainly because the author does not discuss record keeping in detail. He touches on psychology and does discuss money management and risk control by setting stops out of congestion areas, so you do not get run over by market makers and using specific option strategies to control risk.
I do not believe this is a major drawback since there are many books that discuss trading psychology and record keeping.
A personal note regarding trading psychology: When I was not doing so well trading I started reading books that focus mainly on trading psychology , record keeping , followed their advice and got little improvements.
However , a successful trading system changed my psychology by making me more confident, and thus willing to pull the trigger when I see a setup that falls within my specialty. Since most trades were profitable it was easy to cut losses on the ones that were not, thus following the saying cut your losses and let profits run was much easier to do.

After a sell out first and second edition, Dr. Samir Elias added significant new material to the third edition - the main focus of which is making money in multiple ways. You can make money by purely trading stocks using numerous combinations of technical indicators described in several chapters and supported by practical market examples. You can also make money by raising cash on your long term holdings using effective and simple option strategies. In addition, you can make money by increasing your return on profitable trades while significantly reducing losses on unprofitable ones by using risk control strategies described in a special chapter. Learn also how to find stocks that have the potential to deliver explosive profits by incorporating ideas from the author's own stock scanning system that is presented in the book. Make the most of your trades by using specific techniques to determine the approximate best exit time and price using methods in the book applied in detail to the author's own trades. Whatever kind of trader you may be, this book will show you practical ways to increase your profits. If you are a swing trader, you can use candlestick charts combined with two specific technical signals to enter profitable trades. If you are an intermediate term trader, you can use profitable chart patterns described in one of the chapters in combination with technical signals to increase your return. Long term investors can use CD charts described in an especially dedicated chapter to determine the long term direction of a stock as well as entry and exit points.

Understanding Options Review

Understanding Options

I was in the middle of writing my own book on retirement investing, which I have now finished. During that process I read many different books to get a well-around education on the subject. One area that always fascinated me - but seemed overwhelming - was the arena of stock options. I read the Futures and Options for Dummies book, only to then become more confused. I kinda gave up on the subject until I stumbled upon Michael Sincere's book in the store.
Don't let the size of the book fool you. The author packs quite a lot of information into these 221 pages. He explains the world of stock options in a very easy-to-understand format. Michael debunks many myths about options and shows you that while some types of options are highly risky, some are not.
This book is the launching pad to get you started in the world of stock options. You will eventually need to read more if you wish to purchase or sell options, but this book becomes your foundation. The nice thing about this book is that you will quickly learn whether or not options are right for you. Personally, I do not want to participate in options. However, I was able to make an informed decision based on the knowledge found in this book. I am still glad I read the book and highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about stock options.

Options Made Easy: Your Guide to Profitable Trading (2nd Edition) Review

Options Made Easy: Your Guide to Profitable Trading (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I want to say that I definitely didn't dislike this book. It's a solid introduction to options trading and it covers an awful lot of material. My issue with the book is that it tried to cover too many things by not fleshing out the details on many topics. As another reviewer pointed out, there are much better options (no pun intended) if you want to learn about fundamental or technical analysis. Frankly, depending on your time horizon, if you don't have an understanding of analysis of either kind you probably shouldn't even think about trading options. But back to the book; I do wish it had more on options trading strategies. Explanations of the vertical spreads are good, but then there's just a long 'strategy table' in the back that glosses over strangles, butterflies, condors, backspreads, etc. without providing any meaningful detail on how they should be used. Topics like volatility, essential to understanding premiums, are also touched on too lightly. I don't normally care for statements like "it would take another book in itself to explain this," but I swear it was repeated 3 or 4 times.
Options are a tool to limit risk, but misused they can be very risky. This book does a good job of describing what options are and some basic ways in which they're used (e.g., if you think a stock will go down, buy a put or sell a call), but it didn't provide me with enough information to successfully prepare myself to trade options.
I would look to other options books before this one unless you just want a very basic primer to read before you delve into the real meat of options trading.

Joe has done a good job of taking interesting stories from his life and distilling an excellent life-lesson from each. Joe's life comes through clearly in this well written collection. He is transparent and engaging. Not only does it draw us to examine our inner health and values, but to look to our own stories for the lessons hidden in them. Worth a plane flight to read it.
