A Dance Around the Desert Review

A Dance Around the Desert

The author sure knows how to put the reader in the setting. I don't own or ride horses, but could feel what these two gals were experiencing---the thirst, dust, worry and sweat as they wandered around in the desert heat, trying to find their way home. Marijuana, adultery, and murder add to the suspense. The book is definitely an exciting read.

The Revolution in Horsemanship: And What It Means to Mankind Review

The Revolution in Horsemanship: And What It Means to Mankind
Average Reviews:

Leaving what you know, and struggling to find a better approach is not easy. To do so while trying to engage a large, wild-eyed equine can really undermine your confidence.
The authors of "The Revolution in Horsemanship" are uniquely qualified to be our guides, and they do an excellent job. Miller and Lamb map the progression of the shift in horse training over the past 25 years, and then fit it into the context of classical training over hundreds of years.
They understand that this may be the best way ever to teach the elusive "feel" that inspires the magic of harmony and cooperation. Extensive discussion of horse behavior is presented, including how it is critical to training success.
They credit and weave together the many approaches of the popular clinicians, and recognize the most important idea, the real value of this training work, which is best explained by them:(Quoting from the book) "Perhaps this is the reason that this revolution occurred. To hand us a powerful tool for developing the rest of our humanity, the part that wasn't genetically endowed, the part that, in fact, goes against our genetically endowed, predatorial instincts. The part we have to work to obtain and is therefore most valuable to us."
I am getting this book into the hands of my students and my friends, as "doing the work" will benefit our horses and ultimately our entire community. It's a wonderfully written overview, filled with insight and intelligence.
Many thanks to Dr. Miller and Rick Lamb.

There has been a change in how we treat our horses: We no longer "break" them to harness or saddle; we "gentle" them, so they become our partners, their natural grace and athleticism restored and enhanced through humane and thoughtful methods. Beginning with equine evolution and domestication, Dr. Miller and Rick Lamb focus on the contributions of such classical horsemen as Xenophon, Pluvinel, nineteenth-century "whisperers, tamers, and professors," and modern masters like the Dorrances, Buck Brannaman, Pat Parelli, John Lyons, and their disciples, and the connection between rodeo and natural horsemanship. The authors describe how the horse's mind works, how horses learn, and how the revolution has used those principles, especially with regard to a training regimen for newborn foals developed by Dr. Miller that produces positive results to last a lifetime. These training methods include new techniques in riding, such as preliminary groundwork and the independent seat, as well as visualization and other aspects of sport psychology, yoga, and allied disciplines. The role of tack and equipment is also discussed and evaluated in depth. And because the modern attitudes are reflected in equine care, appendices assess innovations in hoof care, nutrition, and veterinary treatment, including so-called "alternative therapies." With its exploration and analysis of modern attitudes and approaches, THE REVOLUTION IN HORSEMANSHIP is one of the most important equestrian publishing events of this decade, and ensures its position as a classic in the field.

The Ghost of the Grand Canyon (Real Kids, Real Places) Review

The Ghost of the Grand Canyon (Real Kids, Real Places)
Average Reviews:

Kids really enjoy all of Carole Marsh's books. Beware of factual inaccuracies, though. They run throughout her book series. In this particular book, the kids get off the plane in Flagstaff, AZ to find the air temp at 110 degrees. Welcome to the desert. The only problem is that Flagstaff is at around 7,000' elevation and even in July (the hottest month) the average high temperature is 81 degrees. In fact the hottest temperature ever recorded in Flagstaff is only 97 degrees. So while these books are fun and at the same time somewhat informative, I have found many instances in Ms. Marsh's books where she does not have all her facts straight.
I contacted Ms. Marsh after some of my 4th grade students read her books and found some mistakes. Here is part of her secretary's response: "The one thing that you might want to remind the students, is that the book is a fiction book" Therefore I would be wary of trusting anything presented as factual in her writing.

Horses, Hitches, and Rocky Trails Review

Horses, Hitches, and Rocky Trails

This is a repurchase of an old friend. Years ago my career and life took me to Wyoming. Like many, I fell in love with the high country and soon realized that the only way to get to the best of it was with horses. As a relative greenhorn, however, I had a lot to learn about getting to and living in the high country, with or without horses. A friend gave me Joe Back's book Horses, Hitches and Rocky Trails. Somewhere along the way, I misplaced it. I'm glad to have it back.
This book is more than informative. It delivers all its name suggests, telling all I needed to know about the tack, rigging and techniques of handling horses in a pack string. By simply following his advice, I found myself not only able to do it, but do it without embarassing myself in the company of real mountain men.
Beyond that, Joe's earthy narrative and humorous, but informative, illustrations make the book a joy to read. Even after you read it cover to cover, you'll want to spend some time looking at the illustrations and re-reading the tidbits of wisdom. If you have an interest or plan to go into the primitive areas of the mountain West, I encourage you to read this even if you never intend to pack a horse yourself.

I just got my hands on this book and can't wait to get some rope and try knots and hitches. The drawings are great and it is easy to make sense of what many other books try to put into words. The drawings are skillfully done to illustrate exactly what is being taught. It says in the back of the book, that this manual was originally intended and used as a textbook for people taking packing classes. Therefore it was designed for practical learning. I'm sure once I finally get out into the woods, that this valuable reference book will be muddy, tattered, dog-eared, but well packed into my mules panniers! I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in packing, especially those just starting out!

The Appaloosa Connection Review

The Appaloosa Connection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is a fast-moving adventure, not only filled with many heart-pulsing moments of plausible action but a fascinating gallery of fully-rounded and highly engaging characters. Ross Garvey is the young Colorado rancher hero, whose prize Appaloosa is stolen; Jaimie Callahan, the spirited fifteen-year-old heroine, who insists on accompanying him to hunt down the thieves; Ash Callahan (who is seeking revenge) and his young accomplice, Sonny Wilke, the villains. (I give nothing away here. The identities of the thieves are revealed on page 13). The author not only knows her Old West terrain as intimately as the lines on her hand, but she can describe the country with such an engrossing relish of fascinating details, that the rough-hewn border land that Mexico didn't want becomes as three-dimensional as the memorable principals themselves. At first the plot seems to be moving in a fast but pretty straightforward manner, but author Melissa Bowersock has plenty of surprises in store as the plot twists and turns towards its unexpected but satisfying conclusion.

When Ross Garvey's prized Appaloosa is stolen from his Colorado ranch, he fully intends to hunt down the thieves in their New Mexico hideout and regain his best broodmare. What he doesn't count on is bull-headed, fifteen year old Jaimie Callahan, whose horse was also stolen by the same thieves. And he certainly does not anticipate the beautiful Mexican girl who's dealing with the thieves, nor the fact that an entire company of Mexican troops is in on the deal!

The Encyclopedia of Historic and Endangered Livestock and Poultry Breeds Review

The Encyclopedia of Historic and Endangered Livestock and Poultry Breeds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ms. Dohner has written a well-researched book on a topic that has begun to catch the attention of many -- historic (and now rare) breeds of livestock. In the past, people dug up roots and bulbs from the old family homestead and transplanted them to new locations. They could go to grandpa and get some of those "dominicker" chickens that his daddy started with.
For many, the homestead and the dominickers are gone now, just like the items the Smithsonian that were once part of every day life. But for some, like the author, "dominickers" and other historic livestock are still a part of life on the farm.
Perhaps that is why Jan Dohner has been able to write a very readable book, giving the reader the profiles and histories of over 200 breeds of poultry and other livestock (goats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, other equines)and even accounts of their original domestication along with their current status. The illustrations only add to the text.
If you are interested in agriculture or farmsteading, if you have been thinking about becoming involved in small farm livestock, poultry raising, or rare breeds conservation, I recommend this book. Or if you are interested in these endeavors and cannot find the book in your local library, ask your librarian "Why not?" Maybe the local library needs a donation!

As the director of an history museum I am often asked to review books and such was the case of War Horse. I was amazed at the scholarship that went into this wonderful book. Its told as a story of the U S Army Remount service which supplied a standard mount for the Cavalry but much more it tells the story of the development of a "using" kind of horse. One of the best parts of the book are the wonderful side bar stories and photos about everyone from George Patton to Francis the talking mule! The complete data on almost every aspect of breading the war horse will make this book a valuable reference. If you like horses or if you just want to know how one of our country's first mass produced war machines was developed this needs to be in your hands. Ted Peters, Director, Heritage Farmstead Museum.

War Horse is the story of the U.S. Army Remount Program, which acquired well-bred stallions from private owners and placed them with farmers and ranchers across the country for breeding to selected mares. These stallions of impressive bloodlines-Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Morgans, and Lippizaners-were bred carefully, developing a cadre of military-worthy horses for the United States and its allies around the world. This book shows how these horses positively contributed to the outcome of conflicts and wars waged the world over and how the war horses also had strong civilian demand and dramatically influenced equestrian bloodlines across our country.

The Art and Science of Clicker Training for Horses: A Positive Approach to Training Equines and Understanding Them Review

The Art and Science of Clicker Training for Horses: A Positive Approach to Training Equines and Understanding Them
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally a long awaited down to earth book on the successes to be had and the pitfalls to be avoided with clicker training. The book deals in great detail with all the questions you ever wanted to ask, worrying questions such as won't feeding treats make my horse bite too more detailed questions about why we need to view working with equines differently to working with dogs. Ben talks about the importance of the trainer learning how to break down what seem like large problems into small behaviours that are much more easily dealt with and how using shaping plans will help you achieve great results to tackle any problems you may be having in your relationship with your Horse, Donkey or Mule.
The first few chapters talk about the importance of knowing the science behind the training technique .It talks to the reader about how and why a little plastic box can communicate so much to the horse. By teaching the trainer this, not only does the trainer start to understand how the horse learns, but also begins to understand how we ourselves learn. We can then apply this knowledge to all our communications with horses no matter what the problem and help us develop a more thorough understanding of our relationship with them.
Further on Ben goes into details about where people can go wrong with using the clicker and how to avoid falling into these traps by using it very clearly and with specific boundaries right from the start.
Ben comes across as clearly passionate for Horses, Donkeys and Mules but the honesty he has for imparting information without Ego, Showmanship or Self Congratulation is the biggest success of this book. Through his vast experience in working with equines, donkeys and mules and his large experience of teaching others to use clicker training and positive reinforcement he is able to show how much fun can be had as long as it is used in a responsible way with much forethought.
I would highly recommend everyone either starting out on the journey or already using clicker to read the invaluable words in this book.
My only criticism is why we had to wait so long and when is the next one ???

Grand Canyon guide Max Hunter is frustrated with his fiancée sports photographer Kari Cavanaugh as she always has an excuse for delaying their marriage. He decides no more shenanigans from his beloved even if it means breaking their two-year old engagement and his heart.
They are heading to the Grand Canyon, which may be their last trip as an entry. However someone claiming to be Kari's mother Margot arrives. Her mother allegedly committed suicide though no body was found. Kari prays the woman is her mother, but if she is why did she vanish; if not why is she terrorizing Kari.
This is an enjoyable romantic suspense as the mystery of Margot makes for a taut thriller that supersedes the underdeveloped romantic subplot. Still readers will be hooked from the moment Margot arrives in Arizona. Like the beleaguered heroine who is unsure whether she wants the woman to be her mom or not as there are pros and cons to each; fans will ponder could this be her mom and if yes where was she and why appear now; while if not sinister stalking seems strangely possible but once again why Kari.

I have been a fan of David Stoecklein's work for many years, and he continues to outdo himself with each new endeavor. This book is no exception. His love of horses and the west, combined with his overall vision, unique photographic eye and technique make this book truly exceptional. The variety of shots and his use of angles and light will keep you turning each page with anticipation. You feel as if you have snuck into the horses world, without the horse knowing that you are there. He successfully captures the western horse in a way that portrays them as they are: stunning, magnificent animals, deserving our our appreciation and respect. Even those who are not 'horse' fans per se, will appreciate the depth and breadth of Mr. Stoecklein's style.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, I was looking forward to this book because I love greece, horses, military history, greek mythology and philosophy but I never thought I would find useful advice on horses for me. I mean how could Xenophon who lived in 430bc relate to me and my horses today?
If you love horses, if you are buying a horse and if you want to get the most from your horse without a fight... if a willing horse is your goal then you'll want to read this.
Certainly this book has brought me back to the wonder of greece.. to Socrates and Athens, it makes me want to go back again to see Xenophons Greece.
A horseman would be better to read Dr. Nylands review vs. reading most of the horsemanship books today... its an easy read and it all applies to your horses today. Xenophon and Dr. Nyland have me listening to my barefooted horses foot falls to hear the sound of a good foundation and a good foot.
I had to chuckle over the fact that so many people have come to our adoption program to adopt a horse and wanted 'a certain color'... oh boy, they really need to read the section on selecting a horse and how many people have I seen try to force a horse to do what they want. Xenophon knew how to bring out the best in a horse and it wasn't by force. We have so much to learn today. Dr. Nyland's Xenophon is a great place to start for any horseman.

Xenophon was an ancient Greek soldier who lived from around 430-354 BC. His "Art of Horsemanship" is his work on selecting and educating horses. It was not the first work of its kind, an earlier being that by Simon of Athens. This book also includes excerpts by Aristotle, Columella, Diogenes Laertius, Herodotos, Juvenal, Livy, Pliny the Elder, Simon of Athens, Suetonius, Theomnestus, Virgil, (and two of Xenophon's other works mentioning horsemanship,) which are relevant to Xenophon's The Art of Horsemanship. This is a NEW English translation by Dr A. Nyland.

I bought this book by Robert M. Miller with my very first
miniature horse foal, and it WORKS!!!!
I imprint trained him at birth and some the next day and
everything I did, helped that horse just like he said it would.
His personality is beautiful, he learned the desired responses
well and I know its because of the imprint training. It does not
take much time or effort on your part. I bought a foal that was
not imprint trained and the difference between the two horses
later on is UNBELIEVEABLE. The imprint trained horse is
friendly, obedient, and unafraid of anything ,thanks to this
book. TO me it was well worth the money I paid for it.I expect
2 more foals this year and already have my book ready to
do everything he suggests, I know it will make my life easier
when that little foal becomes a weanling thru full-grown.
For me, it was especially helpful because of my inexperience
with horses but this book would work just as well with the
experienced. It does shape the horses behaviors for LIFE.

IMPRINT TRAINING OF THE NEWBORN FOAL offers an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach to handling and training newborn foals, as well as numerous techniques and exercises that aid the foal in halter training and later in performing riding maneuvers. Imprinting can be defined as a learning process occurring soon after birth in which a behavior pattern is established. The newborn foal is imprinted to follow and bond with whatever large object looms above it at the time of birth.Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them. The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.

This was an excellent book. I greatly enjoyed each and every adventure that Ben K. Green takes you through in the book. In a time where everything is done the easy way it is great to be able to look back and see how things realy used to be done. Through this book you are able to get a very clear picture of the old west. I loved reading about all the different ways the horse traders thought of to skam each other and somehow they both thought they were getting a good deal. I thought this book was great and was not able to put it down once I picked it up. I can't wait to read more by Ben K. Green.

I have been looking for a copy of this book for over a year, but since it was out of print all the books I found were very expensive. I was so glad to see this book was reprinted and at an affordable price. The book is full of great short stories and tons of history. Raise Your Hand if You Love Horses: Pat Parelli's Journey from Zero to Hero (Western Horseman Books)

It seems that Parelli evokes strong responses. It is possible that professional trainers are particularly, shall we say, enthusiastic, in their negative reviews, since Parelli regularly refers to them as 'predators'. The book is inspiring. The Parelli approach is logical, methodical and well organized. And, the sentiments that Parelli and his wife express are genuinely moving. Yes, the Parellis are unquestionably master merchandisers and that probably turns some off. But, you don't have to spend enormous dollars to benefit from their training methods. The book is well worth the price simply as a 'read' on horsemanship. The techniques are definitely worth trying. And, as far as I can tell (and in contrast to other reviewers' assertions), it certainly doesn't seem that Parelli is recommending that novice riders hop bareback on a horse with no reins and take off at a gallop. Rather, he offers a very standardized, step-wise progression. The book is well worth a serious read, as are Parelli's seminars. Buy the book, spend a weekend at one of their seminars and decide for yourself.
