Wildlife Painting Basics: Deer, Antelope & Other Hooved Animals Review

Wildlife Painting Basics: Deer, Antelope and Other Hooved Animals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great book to use for anyone interested in wildlife painting, specifically hooved animals such as deer, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, zebras, etc. Obligatory information such as surfaces, grounds, brushes, acrylic paints and gathering reference material is provided. Each animal gets its own chapter and each chapter follows a standard format. First, anatomy and how to sketch the featured animal is shown, then mini-demonstrations that show close ups of key features such as the head, neck, eyes, legs, etc.
The format of each demonstration is clean and easy to follow. There are numerous reference photos of the various animals as well as photos of the painting process. The close-ups of painting things such as fur and antlers is particularly helpful. The final chapters show step-by-step demonstrations of the environment as well as the animals and the author supplies ideas for how to compose your own original paintings from reference material. I would like to mention that although the author uses acrylic these painting techniques work just as well for other types of opaque paints. Even though I use acrylic paints myself I plan to use these techniques for some wildlife paintings using casein as well. The only painting media I use that might need other techniques than those demonstrated here are watercolor and pastels. Overall, an excellent book for any beginning wildlife painters reference shelf.

The Encyclopedia of Deer Review

The Encyclopedia of Deer
Average Reviews:

There are nice pictures and nice tidbits of info about deer but generally there are no good, unbiased deer books that exist. Most books are loaded with jargon about hunting and "management" practices. Sadly, I have yet to find a good deer book with unbiased educated information about deer. I wish the book had more pictures for each type of deer and more specific info about the animals. Many deer books just talk about deer and people, something I don`t care about. If I wanted to read a hunting magazine I`d buy one for my bathroom reading.

Deer World Review

The book says what it is...Its a bunch of shots of deer, their relatives and other woodlands creatures. Its a great book to have around to show to kids and just thumb through it if your a nature lover. Not much in the way of reference material, but thats frankly not the honus of this book...its just the joy of thumbing through a fine selection of deer. If your like me who used to know the joy of the deer but moved out the country, its a good book to bring back memories of the greatest setting in America. Wish it was a bigger volume.

A year in the life of North America's most beautiful and popular game species.

This exciting book by renowned wildlife photographer Dave Taylor features 375 images of North American deer species in their natural habitat. The remarkable photographs are arranged by day and month, juxtaposed with informative captions that offer notes on the animal, its behavior, the role it plays within its local ecosystem, and where and when it can best be viewed.

As a bonus, Taylor includes photographs of other animals found in the deer's world, such as wolves and bears.

The Deer Hunters Bible Review

The Deer Hunters Bible
Average Reviews:

.... It is not a must have and if I had been able to scan the book before buying I would not have purchased it. While I agree some of the information is interesting (not altogether new) it is dated and has information that is in direct contradiction to information published since its original publication. The book has a 1963 copyright. Accordingly, the information on vehicles, guns, bows (all the bows were recurve and compounds with faster arrow speeds were not even invented!), and other equipment such as treestands, etc. is very outdated (as readily seen by the pictures). Some information is never outdated such as where to aim when shooting a deer and how to field dress a deer so it is good to read again.
Information on how a deer's eyes work and their other habits does not seem to be up to date (for example there is no discussion about the sensitivity to ultraviolet light). I found a much more detailed discussion of scrapes and rubs in "The Advance Deer Hunter's Bible" by Weis (sp?) althought that book was also a little dated (1993 I think).
There are better books out there and much better articles in many of the magazines that hit the stands during hunting season. Save your money on this one.

This book is a question and answer book. The entire book is full questions about the whitetail deer. Leonard usually has data to support his answers to the questions in his book. He also gives other people credit when he uses an answer that he learned from their studies. This is a great book for either beginners or experienced hunters. I have been hunting for 14 years and I learned a lot of things from this book.

Deer-Resistant Landscaping: Proven Advice and Strategies for Outwitting Deer and 20 Other Pesky Mammals Review

Deer-Resistant Landscaping: Proven Advice and Strategies for Outwitting Deer and 20 Other Pesky Mammals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title of this book understates what it provides. It is about much more than deer -- rats, voles, woodchucks, and many other animals are covered. Usually when I research a problem varmint, I find either natural history (animal habit info) or pest control information. I rarely find the two integrated together as they are in this book. I own an Audubon Society book on mammals, which is good to understand how they live in the wild, but not so good when figuring out my control options. Usually I bypass deer control books (nothing new under the sun) but this book - containing so much more info - caught my eye.
Neil Soderstrom provides facts and insights for understanding the history and habits of the animal one is dealing with, and provides control and management options for real-world situations.
I think highly enough of this book that I gave it as a gift to a wildlife control professional I know.
It is a thorough effort and well worth owning. It is not a superficial treatment that you can pick up in a quick scan while standing in a book store -- much more effort and substance has gone into this book. I heard Soderstrom speak and clearly he was completely immersed in understanding his subject matter. I do recommend this book.

Elk Hunting the West the Eastman Way Review

Elk Hunting the West the Eastman Way
Average Reviews:

I have to say this book is a tell it like it should be bible for the do-it-yourselfer. I have read many hunting books in the last few months and found this book to be the most honest and forward text on Elk hunting for the begginer. The book opens your thought process by addressing the necessary basic knowledge for the begginer. From planning, tactics, elk behaviors, the different stages of the rut, rack bracketting, and the gear necessary to complete the task. What I found most helpful is how Mike Eastman really breaks everything down into an easy to understand format. If you really desire to hunt elk in the west, I would suggest you put this book at the front of your list. You will not regret it!

Mule Deer: A Handbook for Utah Hunters and Landowners Review

Mule Deer: A Handbook for Utah Hunters and Landowners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really doubt that there is a person who understands mule deer and mule deer management in Utah as well as retired wildlife biologist Dennis Austin. There may be some who understand portions of the mule deer story in greater detail, or with more sophistication, but Austin can speak for the entire mule deer package: evolution, history, biology, management, use, abuse, hunters and hunting, agriculturalists and crop damage, and the future of mule deer.
That makes this book, Mule Deer: A Handbook for Utah Hunters and Landowners, an important contribution to mule deer management.
What are the impacts of predators? Is all winter habitat equal in importance? Will the "good old days" of abundant deer harvests ever return? Should deer ever be fed in the winter? Do deer really damage apples, alfalfa, and winter wheat?
If you are a wildlife biologist new to Utah, this is required reading. If you are an experienced wildlife biologist, you should match your wits, and your interpretation of the various studies (many authored by Austin), with this book. If you are a landowner or ranch/farm manager, this book is full of tips for increasing the deer population and the quality of the harvest. And if you are one of those who plan your fall vacations around the mule deer hunt, quit complaining about the "woulda-shoulda-coulda" aspects of deer management, and learn something. Austin speaks with experience as a deer hunter, a resident who has experienced the destruction and modification of winter range, and as a wildlife biologist paid to manage mule deer for multiple uses (but primarily sustained yield).
The ability of a biologist to be able to devote a lifetime to studying mule deer probably will never happen again, so this book really is unique. All mule deer enthusiasts will learn from it.
