In his usual style, he covers nearly all of the huntable species in North America, blending together information about the game, the method of hunting it, appropriate rifles, and his personal experiences hunting that species. Not only is it informative and useful as a reference work, it is simply enjoyable to read.

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent book. I am one week back from my first hunting experience, which was for elk in northern Colorado. Not knowing what to expect from hunting and in particular elk hunting, this book set the stage for my understanding of what to expect and how to prepare. The author was extremely thoughtful in the organization and topics offered in this book. I read it three times before going on my hunt. I was prepared in every way except one. The author wasn't kidding about being in shape. You can certainly be ready for hunting by doing normal fitness routines but hauling elk out of back country is an extreme physical challenge. The author provides many tactical options for driving and setting up ambushes. As a reader you don't appreciate the organization and quality of this book until you are in the field doing the right things and finding elk sign where others didn't look. I can say with confidence that I am totally hooked on hunting and that is in large part because I avoided many potential frustrations with good preparation all of which came significantly from reading this book. (More customer reviews)I have to say this book is a tell it like it should be bible for the do-it-yourselfer. I have read many hunting books in the last few months and found this book to be the most honest and forward text on Elk hunting for the begginer. The book opens your thought process by addressing the necessary basic knowledge for the begginer. From planning, tactics, elk behaviors, the different stages of the rut, rack bracketting, and the gear necessary to complete the task. What I found most helpful is how Mike Eastman really breaks everything down into an easy to understand format. If you really desire to hunt elk in the west, I would suggest you put this book at the front of your list. You will not regret it!

I live on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State and spend my free time taking pictures, hunting and observing the Blacktail deer. This book is worth the money for the readers trophies pictures alone. Great insights on tactics we have used for years and some insight on different approaches. Thanks for doing such a masterpiece.
