Hunting in North America: Big Game, Small Game, Upland Birds, Waterfowl, Wild Turkey (Complete Hunter) Review

Hunting in North America: Big Game, Small Game, Upland Birds, Waterfowl, Wild Turkey (Complete Hunter)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a clear, concise introduction to hunting in North America. The first 75 pages, comprising chapters 1 through 3, briefly survey general topics such as the types of cover that game animals use for security, the hunting rifle, shotgun, bow, and muzzle loader, and hunting strategies such as scouting, still-hunting, stand-hunting, stalking, driving, flushing, using hunting dogs, float-hunting, and how to find downed game. The final 110 pages, chapter 4, discuss hunting big game ( whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, moose, pronghorns, black bear ), small game ( cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, gray squirrel, fox squirrel, raccoon ), upland game birds ( ring-necked pheasant, bobwhite quail, California quail, gambel's quail, mountain quail, scaled quail, ruffed grouse, sage grouse, chukar partridge, Hungarian partridge, wild turkey, morning dove, woodcock ), and waterfowl ( puddle ducks, diving ducks, geese ).
For each animal there is a photo of the animal and an illustration of North America indicating the range of the animal's habitat. There are also recommendations for minimum caliber and bullet weight or shotshell gauge and shot size to take each animal. There is no information on how to field dress, skin, butcher, or cook the animal. There are no photos or illustrations of tracks or scat, except a single comparative illustration showing the relative sizes of pronghorn, deer, elk, and moose hoof prints.
This book contains no hunting stories, anecdotes, or personal reminiscences. The book is written as a reference, and in fact no author is credited with the text.

The Bowhunter's Handbook Review

The Bowhunter's Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Coming from England where bow hunting is illegal, this book was an eye opener to me. The book deals with all types of statergies involved in bow hunting, from concealment to stalking, equipment and camoflage, watching and calling. Each huntable four legged game is shown and analysed by its size, habitat and habits. They detail the senses of each species whether they rely primarily on sight, hearing or smell. Tactics and techniques are discussed after a short description of each animal hunted. Being from England I felt a little sad at the thought of trophy hunting such beasts, so did the authors, although they had experienced the hunt too. The book is very saftey concious through out and tries to put over the right and wrong ways to preserve the sport in the public eyes. Although I said the book turned me soft the whole approach was realistic and to any bow hunter anywhere it must be read for the drops of intelligence and understanding of your sport.

This book provides good infornation, broken down by region, on the geography, likely game species and a general idea of the amount of public land available. I wished it would go into more detail about dealing with landowners and what to likely expect in the way of securing private land to hunt. The book was very helpful.

Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter (Classics of American Sport) Review

Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter (Classics of American Sport)
Average Reviews:

I have a copy of this original work, it is still as exciting now as when it was printed (1905). The chapter of wolf and coyote coursing alone is worth the price of the book. Read of the man who caught wolves and coyotes with his bare hands (ok he wore a glove). The hunts for sheep and goats in the Rocky Mts. as well as the chase of the deer in th badlands are all brought to life. Roosevelt was a keen sportsman and naturalist, he provides us a look at the American west at the turn of the century. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what hunting in the old west was like.

In Trace of TR: A Montana Hunter's Journey Review

In Trace of TR: A Montana Hunter's Journey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"In Trace of TR" chronicles the legacy of one of our greatest Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, while simultaneously interweaving a memoir of Aadland's life in the American West. This is a genuine story, written with a great deal of heart, that relates the shared admiration that both the author and TR have for the West.
Aadland brings you along on foot for rugged hunting expeditions, campfire visits, or riding on horseback through the mountains and forests of western Montana and northern Wyoming. It's obvious that Aadland did an exceptional amount of research into TR's character, life, and values. Interspersed throughout the book are quotes, letters written by TR, and stories of the President's own experiences of the West, many in the very same setting as the author. Aadland creatively relates his own experiences while on the trail, and also with his family and friends, to those which Roosevelt witnessed more than a century ago.
I see quality books as transporting the reader to experience the same setting and plot that is unfolding before him in the novel. Aadland's style does just that, keeping me entertained and interested in his experiences, and those of TR, while pursuing the outdoors of the American West. I would be happy to recommend this book, without reservation, and to give it a solid five stars.

I enjoyed somewhat the sections on creating different objects such as lamps but was mainly interested in carving antlers. There was very little information there about carving and none that helped me. Disappointing.

A handbook on the many ways to use antlers
Covers whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, caribou, and elk antlers
Gives a detailed explanation of Boone and Crockett scoring and instructions for making a wide variety of antler craft items
There's no question that antlers are hot these days, with collectors paying top dollar for quality racks and everyone from hunters to hikers searching for them in fields and backwoods across the country. Handicraft techniques have moved far beyond the basic trophy mount as well, and one can find antler knives, antler pipes, and even antler chandeliers in shops and homes. Dennis Walrod's Antlers offers an entertaining and informative survey of all things antler, from their biology to their role in Native American culture to the sordid side of the antler boom. (Dubbed "the new ivory" by some, they have a lively presence on the Asian aphrodisiac market.) The book is also loaded with practical information and step-by-step instructions for collectors and craftsmen, designed to maximize the use (and profit) you can get out of your antlers.

The Encyclopedia of Deer Review

The Encyclopedia of Deer

There are nice pictures and nice tidbits of info about deer but generally there are no good, unbiased deer books that exist. Most books are loaded with jargon about hunting and "management" practices. Sadly, I have yet to find a good deer book with unbiased educated information about deer. I wish the book had more pictures for each type of deer and more specific info about the animals. Many deer books just talk about deer and people, something I don`t care about. If I wanted to read a hunting magazine I`d buy one for my bathroom reading.

Boddington proves once again why he is the best general hunting writer alive today. In his usual style, he covers nearly all of the huntable species in North America, blending together information about the game, the method of hunting it, appropriate rifles, and his personal experiences hunting that species. Not only is it informative and useful as a reference work, it is simply enjoyable to read.

I picked up a copy of this book on a whim. I have another book from the author on predator hunting and saw him on TV hunting moose a while back. I have to tell you, I feel this was a good investment. I like to hunt and dream of hunting for elk and moose, etc... But the cost of doing one of these trips has held me back. I wanted to go do-it-yourself route, but didn't know where to begin. Now I do.
The author's recomendations were spot on and the foreword by Waddell was very cool.

Since I got my first compound bow this winter I researched at the library for books for beginners. I found this book and have not been willing to return it to the library. It is such a valuable reference I decided I should buy a copy. It covers information on proper stance and release, tuning your bow, what equipment and accessories are best for a certain person or situation, as well as hunting techniques. Dwight Schuh knows his stuff.

The Deer Hunters Bible Review

The Deer Hunters Bible
Average Reviews:

.... It is not a must have and if I had been able to scan the book before buying I would not have purchased it. While I agree some of the information is interesting (not altogether new) it is dated and has information that is in direct contradiction to information published since its original publication. The book has a 1963 copyright. Accordingly, the information on vehicles, guns, bows (all the bows were recurve and compounds with faster arrow speeds were not even invented!), and other equipment such as treestands, etc. is very outdated (as readily seen by the pictures). Some information is never outdated such as where to aim when shooting a deer and how to field dress a deer so it is good to read again.
Information on how a deer's eyes work and their other habits does not seem to be up to date (for example there is no discussion about the sensitivity to ultraviolet light). I found a much more detailed discussion of scrapes and rubs in "The Advance Deer Hunter's Bible" by Weis (sp?) althought that book was also a little dated (1993 I think).
There are better books out there and much better articles in many of the magazines that hit the stands during hunting season. Save your money on this one.

The Big Game Hunter's Guide to Montana, in my opinion, is an absolute necessity for any hunting trip to Montana. It contains a great deal of information on each type of game animal in Montana. It also gives regional game population and harvest information. There are several cities listed with everything from hotels to meat processors addresses and phone numbers. In short, everything one would need to know before planning a hunting trip to Montana.

Deer Hunting: 4th Edition Review

Deer Hunting: 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been shooting for several years, but only got my MA hunting permit last fall, and want to hunt deer this year. I picked up this book, and found it pretty interesting, but the title of the book seems to promise an overview, or encyclopedic coverage, and on that score I found it a bit lacking.
An index would have been quite helpful.
A bibliography or "further reading" section would have been nice.
Some discussion on shot placement, and minimum calibers for taking shots from different angles and ranges would have been nice. There is a chapter entirely dedicated to firearms and bowes, but no unified treatment of caliber and ammunition. There are a few anecdotes about what friends use, but what I'd really like to see is a table, showing common calibers, energy levels, suitability, etc.
Some discussion on optics would be nice. Scopes and iron sightes are mentioned in passing, but what are the author's recomendations on appropriate power levels for optics in various terrains?
The chapter on dressing a kill was decent, but I was hoping for more. The black and white photos were as clear as one might expect, but color photos that more crisply show the distinction between fur, organs, and meat would be nice...or better yet, color diagrams! (There is not a single diagram in the book, nor a single table, although there are lots of B&W photos).
There is a fair amount of information on removing organs, but the section on quartering is quite brief. A seasoned deer hunter knows all about this, I'm sure, but a neophyte could use a lot more information on what tools are recommended (hunting knife? small axe? saw? What brands? What should I look for?), and detail on exactly where to cut. Here is the complete information on removing hind legs:
"Hind legs, or hams, can be removed by cutting the hip joint. You can locate this joint by moving the leg back and forth a few times."
That's it.
When (if?) I'm face-to-face with my first ever deer carcass, and I have to quarter it to get it out of the woods, I'd prefer to have a lot more information than "move the joint back and forth and cut it".
Diagrams of the various bones would be nice. Telling me where to start cutting would be nice. Telling me what tool to use to cut would be nice.
Disposal of viscera is a topic that should be touched on. From the MA hunter's ed course, I know that one should either bury or pack out viscera (at least here in MA). Is this universally true?
One or more suggested equipment lists (as found in _The Complete Walker III_) would be nice. Maybe checklists for various permutations of single hunter/ two hunters, season, and weapon.
Some discussion of game laws and tags would be nice. I know a bit because of the hunter's ed course, but a refresher would be nice.
Anyway, in conclusion: this is a decent book, easy to read, by an author who clearly knows his business, but there are vast areas that it could cover and doesn't, and the organization and lack of diagrams/bibliography/checklists, etc. is a deep flaw. The discussions of the politics around high fence hunting preserves seem a bit out of place. The discussion of deer species is interesting, but should not come at the expense of a discussion of applied deer anatomy.
I'd love to see a fourth edition with 600 pages instead of 300, a good index, equipment checklists, some information on marksmanship, contact information, suggested reading, more on quartering an animal, much more on tools and brands, info on hunting regulations, diagrams, info on shot placement, info on scopes, etc., etc., etc.

I have been hunting for 14 years and I learned a lot of things from this book.

Elk Hunting Guide: Skills, Gear, And Insight Review

Elk Hunting Guide: Skills, Gear, And Insight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent book. I am one week back from my first hunting experience, which was for elk in northern Colorado. Not knowing what to expect from hunting and in particular elk hunting, this book set the stage for my understanding of what to expect and how to prepare. The author was extremely thoughtful in the organization and topics offered in this book. I read it three times before going on my hunt. I was prepared in every way except one. The author wasn't kidding about being in shape. You can certainly be ready for hunting by doing normal fitness routines but hauling elk out of back country is an extreme physical challenge. The author provides many tactical options for driving and setting up ambushes. As a reader you don't appreciate the organization and quality of this book until you are in the field doing the right things and finding elk sign where others didn't look. I can say with confidence that I am totally hooked on hunting and that is in large part because I avoided many potential frustrations with good preparation all of which came significantly from reading this book. Happy hunting!
