Blakely is more than an author. I couldn't put this book down. It has history that should be required reading for every high school student to learn about the western plains tribes and the Europeans moving in. Blakely weaves classical music through battles, philosophy from both the European and Indian cultures, descriptions of horses used for buffalo hunting and battle, warfare from the Comanche and white perspective with conversations from the leaders of both sides, nature studies in plants and geography. Where else would you find a protagonist that is ugly, short and plays a Stradivarius violin for pleasure. He speaks several languages and teaches his Cheyenne wife to read and write.
This is the second book in his trilogy and I can't wait for the third one. No other author can put so much literature in a book that is called a Western. This should rank with Mark Twain and other classic writers.

Introducing Cultural and Media Studies: A Semiotic Approach Review

Very good condition, postage and shipping process a bit slow and I was disappointed that the book was so cheap, but ended up costing nearly the same price of buying it new in a retail store because of the shipping charges, so I probably wouldn't buy something like that again.

This second edition of the popular introductory textbook Tools for Cultural Studies, has been thoroughly revised and updated for a new generation of students taking introductory courses in cultural studies and cultural analysis at a tertiary level. It provides a solid grounding in the key terms and theories necessary for the study of popular culture and media texts. Without underestimating the complexity of the social, this text encourages a critical and inventive attitude to cultural theory and, through its practical step-by-step approach, is very confidence-building.

Trading in the Zone: Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline and a Winning Attitude Review

Trading in the Zone: Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline and a Winning Attitude

If you are like most people, after your first few losing trades you set about to learn better market analysis. After your next string of losers you learned about risk management. But there's still one more challenge to conquer; yourself.
That is the major premise of this book. If it sounds like wishy-washy psycho-babble to you, I'll only say that I would have agreed -- four months ago, before I quit my 20-year technology career, obtained a Series/7 license and joined a professional day-trading firm. I now believe most people would lose money if you gave them 50/50 odds on whether or not it was going to rain tomorrow.
In other words, successfully forecasting the market is not enough. Why not? Well, this book explains why not. It has to do with one's sense of self-worth, one's moral judgment of money, one's work-ethic, one's tendency to focus on good news while ignoring bad, and other things.
"Zone" was recommended to a friend of mine by a professional floor trader who told him, "I wish I had read it before starting two years ago. Don't place another trade until you do." Well said. Does this apply to investors as well as traders? Oh, absolutely! If you have ever said to yourself, "I'm not selling that stock while it's down, I'll wait until I have a profit in it," then for the love of money, read this book.
Finally, read "Zone" before Douglas' earlier work. If you still want more then read "Disciplined Trader" for a general review plus a deeper exploration into the author's philosophical and meta-physical theories.

Philosophy (Irwin Trader's Edge Series) Review

Philosophy (Irwin Trader's Edge Series)

Mel Thompson's book Philosophy is one of the best books on the subject I have read. He approaches the matter in a writing style that is way far from the pompous, rigid, holier-than-thou method some writers use. His writing is lucid, captivating, fun and educational (two words which are rarely found together)...He discusses concisely yet sufficiently and thoroughly about philosophic concepts and highlights the most important parts of each concept and elucidates them masterfully. This book will appeal to anyone from the member of the philosophical clerisy to the ordinary layperson. A truly interesting read.

An accessible introduction to the central questions in Western philosophy and how the major philosophers have explored them. What can we know for certain about the world or ourselves? Can we prove the existence of God? How is the mind related to the body? What does it mean to be moral or immoral? What is justice? How should society be organized? Questions such as these are central to how we think about the world and form the core of the discipline of philosophy. This text answers these essential questions and explores how philosophical movements have considered them. Organized by theme and topic rather than historically, key terms are explained, such as metaphysics and existentialism.

John Scottus Eriugena (Irwin Trader's Edge Series) Review

John Scottus Eriugena (Irwin Trader's Edge Series)
Average Reviews:

John Scottus Eriugena - WHO? This man was one of the great thinkers of the "Dark Ages" and this book goes a long way in bringing his work the respect it deserves. The book is an overview of his works with an emphasis on the "Periphyson", but it also includes other works as well. The author seems to have a good working knowledge of John Scottus and does a good job of not only uncovering his work, which may be new for many readers of philosophy, but also at uncovering the man and his passions as well. This is a book I can recommend for anyone with an interest in philosophy and/or theology. For students of theology who are interested in the topic of predestination it can be a thought provoking resource. Well written and entertaining as well.

John Scottus Eriugena, the ninth-century Irish philosopher and theologian, is known as the interpreter of Greek thought to the Latin West. He was perhaps the most important philosophical thinker to appear in Latin Christendom between Augustine in the fifth century and Anselm in the eleventh. In this volume, Deirdre Carabine provides a clear and accessible introduction--the only one available in the English language--to the thought of this important figure. In part I, Carabine describes the intellectual revival of the ninth century and situates Eriugena's role within that movement. She looks closely at Eriugena's life and intellectual achievements, including his contribution to the theological controversy on predestination and his roles as teacher and translator of Greek thought. She also examines the Periphyson, undoubtedly Eriugena's most original and important work. In part II, Carabine discusses Eriugena's metaphysics, the structure of reality, the theocentric character of creation, and the role of the trinity and the primordial causes. In particular, she explores Eriugena's employment of negative theology and his understanding of human nature. In conclusion, part III looks at Eriugena's interpretation of the return of all things to their source, including his belief that all people, saints and sinners alike, will return to paradise to the "vision" of a transcendent God.Revealing the unique and compelling nature of Eriugena's thought, and showing why his work continues to appeal to a modern audience, this volume is required reading for students and scholars of medieval philosophy and theology.

Trade With Passion and Purpose: Spiritual, Psychological and Philosophical Keys to Becoming a Top Trader (Wiley Trading) Review

Trade With Passion and Purpose: Spiritual, Psychological and Philosophical Keys to Becoming a Top Trader (Wiley Trading)

One mark of a great book is how original its content is and how much it adds to the existing literature. This book gets 5 stars on both of these fronts. Having done an immense amount of psychological study and soul searching over the last 2 years in an effort to progress in my trading career, I was impressed by how this book was able to still take my trading (and life) mindset to another level. I thought I had read it all, but throughout the book I found unique insights and novel (at least as applied to trading) subjects. By the end of the book I felt a sense of liberation by immediately starting to apply some of the concepts I had read. This book will serve as a great aid to any trader no matter the experience level... it is certainly not limited to those wanting an intro to the psychology of trading. In fact, I find it ideally suited to the experienced traders (struggling and successful) who have already read it all and think there are no more new insights. For me, being a very ambitious trader with very high standards and goals, I found it the perfect aid in helping me find the balance of staying grounded in the good and bad times, and being self forgiving and accepting. You can't imagine the difference that acceptance can make, and this book is full of great practical advice on how to reach that. And it's not all just fluff- it comes from a real trader and is backed by much scientific study and a long history of reliability.
We all have read about traders being in the "zone"... well don't expect to reach there too easily without knowing the concepts in this book. They're truly indispensable no matter how much you already know about trading psychology. Great book.
