(More customer reviews)This was a real page turner and kept me fascinated throughout. This is the Jesus I know!!! and fell in love with him even more than I already had. The historical references to the fall of Jerusalem were spellbinding, and very accurate. What an exciting time. I couldn't wait to get back to it each time I had to put it down, and so I took it everywhere I went (and it isn't a small book). I think The Sandal Maker deserves to be on anyone's best seller lists and should be taken seriously in the arena of Christian Fiction, as well as Biographies of Jesus.
A. Michaelson has written a very well crafted story with profound meaning and life changing implications. For a first book this is impressive to say the least. Tell all your friends. This should be on the best books of 2009.

A Light in the Window (The Mitford Years, Book 2) Review

(More customer reviews)This book was every bit as delightful as At Home in Mitford, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. Jan Karon has created the perfect small town in which we would all like to live, and it is a joy to visit there, even if only for a little while. Esther Cunningham, the mayor of Mitford, says that Mitford always takes care of its own, and I think that is what we all love about the place. It's a place where the community love God and love their neighbors, with all their faults and eccentricities. It is also wonderful to read a about romance between mature adults Father Tim and Cynthia. I applauded Karon's way of communicating Christian values without hitting us over the head with them. I always leave Mitford a little more aware and a little more kindly disposed toward my own neighbors. If only we could create such a community in the real world.

These High, Green Hills (The Mitford Years #3) Review

(More customer reviews)There is just something special about Mitford, North Carolina. Jan Karon has created a magical yet ordinary place, with memorable, endearing characters. I love these novels and enjoy each and every trip I take back.
In the 3rd installment, things are looking up! Father Timothy and Cynthia are settling into married life, and the marvels at having a soul mate after Tim's 60-plus years of bachelorhood has yet to stop amazing him. Their first year will definitely be an adventurous one -- a camping trip gone awry; a 90th birthday party for Timothy's favorite parishioner, Sadie Baxter; the opening of the new nursing home, Hope House; as well as a few newcomers to the Mitford community. And of course all of our favorite characters, like Dooley, Mule and Fancy Skinner, and J.C. Hogan, and places, like The Grill, The Porter Place, and Fernback are back in full swing. Reading these books feel like the best a family reunion has to offer.
A helpful hint for those who are reading the books in order: Book 6 actually fits in between book 2 and 3 -- it is a detailed story of Timothy and Cynthia's wedding. I read it before reading These High, Green Hills. I suggest doing this if you are the type of reader that likes things in chronological order.
I can't wait to continue on with the series. There is a certain beauty about these books, a calming, soothing beauty that makes me want to pack up and move to Mitford! Although not novels of huge, twisting, turning action, Jan Karon manages to turn the ordinary things of life into great milestones. I applaud her and the rewards I receive every time I visit.

(More customer reviews)The only trouble I had with All Together in One Place was I couldn't put it down! I love how Jane doles out little bits of information on the characters, holding back what we really want to know.
In this book, the primary characters are women, a mix of women like you, me, our friends and associates, women who in one way and another become mighty. The context of each of the women's self-discoveries and their group emergence carries us on the best of pioneering adventures, the covered wagon trek. Their revelations provide fuel for our own journeys today.
I'm so glad Jane is writing more in this series. I'm sure other readers will be as eager as I to connect up with Mazie, Tipton, Ruth, Elizabeth and the others again. The turn-around women Ezra Meeker saw must surely be smiling. Jane did them good.

Love and Logic Magic When Kids Leave You Speechless Review

I just took a Love & Logic class at our local YMCA and there wasn't anything "heavy handed" in the teaching materials we received or the videos of the authors we watched. A heavy dose of empathy is always used with their methods i.e the "love" part of love & logic.

John Newton: From Disgrace to Amazing Grace Review

(More customer reviews)While not everyone knows the name of John Newton, everyone knows his song and at least a bit of his story. Immortalized in the words of "Amazing Grace," the most-recorded song in history, everyone knows that John Newton was wretched and miserable until saved by a grace that forever transformed his life. Two centuries ago, fewer people knew his song, but far more knew his story. That story is told again and told afresh in Jonathan Aitken's new biography John Newton: From Disgrace to Amazing Grace.
John Newton lived a life that could only have been more dramatic if it were the product of fiction. Forced into naval service when he was young, Newton endeared himself to no one, living a life of utter disregard for authority. While attempting to desert he was captured and dropped to the lowest ranks of seamen. He eventually found a way to be released from the military and wormed his way onto a slave shape with which he sailed down the long coast of Africa. Being deserted for a time on that dark continent, he was made the slave of a slave-trader and suffered terrible abuse at the hands of his captor. After a time he was rescued and became the captain of his own slave ship. But then, during a long passage across the Atlantic Ocean, he began to read a Bible and underwent the remarkable transformation chronicled in the song he wrote years later.
Newton worked in secular employment for a time but soon felt the call to ministry and was ordained an Anglican priest, a position he retained until his death in 1807. In the intervening years he became widely-known through his biography and through his efforts to abolish the slave trade. He served as mentor to William Wilberforce who fought a long but ultimately successful campaign to ban the British slave trade. It was two hundred years ago that this battle was won and two hundred years ago that Newton died. As Eric Metaxas has written a new biography of Wilberforce to mark the occasion, Aitken has done the same with Newton.
And it is quite a good biography. Aitken, who has previously chronicled the lives of Richard Nixon and Chuck Colson is a recent convert who underwent quite a radical conversion. He does a fine job of bringing the life of his subject to a whole new generation. While it may lack the depth of some of the greatest biographies of the greatest Christians, it is eminently readable and enjoyable from the first page to the last. A unique contribution of this book is that it relies on diaries and correspondence that have previously been unpublished. Newton's own writing, and especially his letters, provide a good deal of the book's content and some of its most edifying. In fact, the content and depth of these letters persuaded me to seek out a volume published by Banner of Truth titled simply The Letters of John Newton.
The theme of this biography can be aptly summarized by the final words spoken by this hero of the faith. "I am a great sinner, but Christ is a great Savior." This account takes us from Newton's days of joyous depravity to his dramatic conversion to his new life and ultimately to the moment he went to meet the great Savior he had come to know and love. It is a worthwhile addition to any library.

John Newton A Slave Set Free (Trailblazers) Review

(More customer reviews)We purchased this book to read aloud as a family. We're only about three-fourths of the way through, but I must admit I'd prefer to be reading Out of the Depths, Newton's own autobiography. Granted, the original would probably be too hard for my 9 and 7 year olds to understand, but I'm confident that my 11 and 13 year olds would do fine with it.
A Slave Set Free opens a little awkwardly in the present day. In the first chapter, two boys named Chris and James end up doing some exploration on their computer about the history of slavery. In the second chapter John Newton's story begins. Though we haven't finished the entire book, it doesn't appear that the author returns to the modern-day Chris and James computer scene.
Anyhow, my boys are all enjoying it. The author does a good job depicting slave conditions on the ships. My nine year old was moved to tears listening to one of the passages.
Overall, a good book. I've always been happy with Christian Focus Publications. Author Irene Howat also wrote the "Ten Boys/Girls Who..." series, which my kids have really enjoyed.

John stood and watched as some of the largest waves he had ever seen threw themselves at the ship. Very little stood between the young slave ship captain and death – and he knew it. His panic and fear made him think only of himself and nothing for the hundreds of men, women and children chained in the hold below. However, God still heard his prayers and the cries of the tortured humanity pleading for mercy and justice. The very man selling them into slavery would soon fight for their freedom. John Newton was one of the worst abusers of the African slave as he travelled the oceans to make money from their misery – but in the end his life was changed and so was theirs.

There are times in our lives when we so desperately want to believe something is real, that we will distort the truth and circumstances all around us, simply to believe the lie. We can go so far as to alienate ourselves from anyone that shares differently.
Denial is a scary and dangerous emotion, be it denial about our health, our friendships, our marriage or our beliefs in an organization or church.
Since writing this book, I have come to grips with the fact that I allowed myself to be deceived. The past is something we can not change - but we can learn from. Living life "now" and having "hope" in the future is truly all one can do.
My speaking and writing is dedicated 100% to information that will uplift, empower and strengthen women - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Dealing primarily with women's heart disease. It's no wonder heart disease is the number one killer of American Women. It's no wonder I, Lois Trader, have premature heart disease. There are seven top risk factors for heart disease; stress & depression are on that list. This book, though not available anymore shows a very depressed, disillusioned person trying desperately to believe in something that doesn't exist any longer, or might never have.
I have come to terms with the fact that I was deceived. I have come to terms that I believed in a pastor and church that was not right.
My life is wonderful, filled with love of my family, which includes my husband of 31 years, three wonderful daughters, two son-in-laws and three grandchildren. (More customer reviews)One mark of a great book is how original its content is and how much it adds to the existing literature. This book gets 5 stars on both of these fronts. Having done an immense amount of psychological study and soul searching over the last 2 years in an effort to progress in my trading career, I was impressed by how this book was able to still take my trading (and life) mindset to another level. I thought I had read it all, but throughout the book I found unique insights and novel (at least as applied to trading) subjects. By the end of the book I felt a sense of liberation by immediately starting to apply some of the concepts I had read. This book will serve as a great aid to any trader no matter the experience level... it is certainly not limited to those wanting an intro to the psychology of trading. In fact, I find it ideally suited to the experienced traders (struggling and successful) who have already read it all and think there are no more new insights. For me, being a very ambitious trader with very high standards and goals, I found it the perfect aid in helping me find the balance of staying grounded in the good and bad times, and being self forgiving and accepting. You can't imagine the difference that acceptance can make, and this book is full of great practical advice on how to reach that. And it's not all just fluff- it comes from a real trader and is backed by much scientific study and a long history of reliability.
We all have read about traders being in the "zone"... well don't expect to reach there too easily without knowing the concepts in this book. They're truly indispensable no matter how much you already know about trading psychology. Great book.

Out of the Pits: Traders and Technology from Chicago to London Review

(More customer reviews)The pit trader postures and screams to establish dominance. He uses physical and psychological intimidation to scare off potential competitors. A certain amount of cooperation and even trust is necessary for him to be successful. It's surprising that Jane Goodall hasn't seen fit to study these young primates.
Caitlin Zaloom, a cultural anthropologist, lived among the savages at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE) for several years, long enough for them to become accustomed to her presence and even, to a point, trust her or at least ignore her. A woman in the trading pit is about as rare as a human living among the gorillas.
There are some pretty compelling reasons to study the trading pits. They are disappearing and soon most trading will be done electronically from all over the world. Traders won't be in the same room with each other and shouting will get you nowhere. How will this change trading? Obviously a loud voice will no longer give a trader an advantage, but will being an alpha male still be a plus?
Zaloom looks at the traditions of traders, the architecture of the trading space, the traders' clothing and habits, how traders get their jobs and how they're trained. She learned the techniques of traders and she became a trader. It's a short book (177 pages of text plus excellent and detailed notes, bibliography, index, and photos), but it covers a lot of territory. The style is often academic, with references to Michel Foucault, for instance, but on the other hand, these are pit traders we're talking about, so you'll have to pardon their French. Zaloom describes an especially colorful London trader, Freddy, who wears khakis with holes in them that show his underwear. He picks his nose, flashes the pit, and sings and barks loudly. It's hard to imagine how the markets will survive without him.
