Yahweh's Warrior (Dahveed) Review

Yahweh's Warrior (Dahveed)

I could hardly wait for this second book in Terri Fivash's series on Dahveed to be published. It was worth the wait! The friendship and brotherhood between Dahveed and Jonathan is wonderfully portrayed. I also appreciated the depiction of Dahveed's loyalty to his king, in spite of the king's efforts to kill him. Most certainly, I felt like I was right there in the action throughout the entire book.

Dahveed: Yahweh's Chosen Review

I really need to thank my friend who got me Terri Fivash's first book Joseph. It was a masterpiece that I found myself reading several times. Then I read Ruth and Boaz and I was sure then that I had a new favourite author. The ending of Ruth and Boaz left me anxiously awaiting - for almost a year - the availability of Dahveed. I honestly thought she had outdone herself on the first two books and wondered whether Dahveed would be up to par. That was until I actually read Dahveed. What an amazing book! Never has an author's skill of story telling impressed me more. Not only is she a master story teller, but she is able to stay strictly in line with the biblical account of the story she is telling. Her background in history allows her to pay incredible attention to detail while she weaves an intricate cast of characters into the story and draws the reader into another time and place. I literally could not put these books down until I had finished them - especially Dahveed. This book takes an intimate look at the early life of one of the most amazing men who ever lived - Israel's beloved Dahveed - and allows the reader to share in his joys, sorrows, trials and triumphs. It takes the reader on a journey that encompasses the circumstances of his birth, spans his childhood and ends with him on the threshold of manhood poised to become God's Warrior. Reading her novels has opened up a whole new perspective on these well-loved bible stories for me. I now understand these characters and their stories more deeply than I used to. What a blessing. I would recommend Terri Fivash's books to anyone as it appears she cannot disappoint. My only protest is that the release date for the second volume in the Dahveed saga has not been announced. I anxiously await!

Horse Tales from Heaven: Reflections Along the Trail with God Review

Horse Tales from Heaven: Reflections Along the Trail with God

After trying college in an urban environment, Rebecca Ondov walked away, finding her career --- and her place --- in the mountain wilderness of Montana. First hired as a ranch cook, she quickly agreed to "training 19 wild mules and 1 wild horse." She is soon out on the trails, setting up camp and cooking for wranglers and hunters, loading and leading pack mules, praying away grizzly bears... I leave other laborious jobs to your imagination. Not being a farm girl, camper, hunter, or horse lover, I sometimes got lost in the wilderness vocabulary. (For others like me, an illustrated glossary is provided.) It's just very clear that Ondov chose a physically demanding job that she generally seemed to relish, despite its freezing temperatures and perilous terrain. She worked in the wilderness for 15 years, two of them as a ranger and inspector for the Forest Service, traveling alone by horseback from camp to camp.
That's the setting for Ondov's book of more than 50 devotionals, each a self-contained story with a strong spiritual/moral point. (There's nothing subtle about the "take-away" element.) At the end, she includes a very forthright evangelistic presentation.
The book is best read as it's intended --- as a devotional, one story per day, rather than as a sit-down, read-straight-through narrative. My favorite stories are about the animals she cares for and who sometimes care for her --- horses, colts, mules, donkeys, dogs --- and about learning to work as a member of a team, pulling together for a common purpose. Anyone intending to go on a wilderness hunt or wrangling trip might want to read Ondov's reflections to see her perspective of what makes for a good ranch guest --- or not.
The book is most engaging toward the end, where Ondov and her ranch team are surrounded by forest fires. All survive, but there is tension in their precariously riding and eventually walking (the horses are too skittish to mount) through blackened forest where the trails are impassable because of sink holes and fallen trees.
Ondov's publisher, Harvest House, has also released a hardcover, gift edition of HORSE TALES FROM HEAVEN. It includes fewer "chapters," which are not presented as devotionals (with an opening Scripture verse and closing prayer). Every spread features a full-color realistic painting of horses by Chris Cummings. Sometimes a horse is posed grazing alone; sometimes a pack is running through a forest, snow, or stream. Pages are also decorated with inspirational quotations from a wide variety of sources --- from Plutarch to Dale Evans Rogers. A Mexican Proverb reads: "It is not enough for a man to learn how to ride; he must learn how to fall." The Ondov text chosen for this edition focuses more on horses and less on wranglers or wilderness life. This larger, trim-size gift edition is better suited for teenagers who take riding lessons and live in outer suburbs far from Montana.

Small-Town Moms: A Dry Creek Family\A Mother for Mule Hollow (Love Inspired) Review

Small-Town Moms: A Dry Creek Family\A Mother for Mule Hollow (Love Inspired)

Two novellas that are packed full of inspiration and romance. This book was a breath of fresh air. Three sisters were all given up to the foster care system when their parents were killed in a car accident and were split up and never saw each other again. One sister passed away but the other two finally get a chance to meet and that's when they find out their sister Dawn left behind a son and a daughter and they are both determined to meet their new found niece and nephew.
In A Dry Creek Family, Maegan goes in search of her niece Lilly to find out if she is being well cared for and she spends time getting to know her and the uncle that is taking care of her. Janet has a talent with the details, there were a lot of side conversations going on and she painted a vivid picture of the scenes. The characters were both haunted by their pasts and insecurities and I thoroughly enjoyed that there was no fighting within this book between the characters.
In A Mother for Mule Hollow, Maegan's sister Olivia finally gets invited to meet her nephew Wes so she packs up her daughter Trudy and heads out to meet Wes, his father Gabe and the grandmother Geogetta. Gabe is not pleased with meeting his ex-wife's sister but realizes he doesn't have much of choice in her getting to know his son Wes. I really enjoyed this story a lot! I felt Debra Clopton just had the reader jump right in to the story from page one. I knew within the first pages I was going to enjoy this novella. The characters were so realistic and well-rounded! I enjoyed the way Gabe was protecting his son and his heart! I enjoyed this story a bit more than the other one and I think it is because I like less details and more character interaction!
There are a lot of spiritual threads in this book, I felt there was more preaching going in A Dry Creek Family but it was still good. I truly believe God is in the restoration business and this is evident in this sweet story of restoring broken families and situations! Very inspirational read that I highly recommend.
I received a copy of this book to read and review from the author. My review is not biased by the fact that I was given this book. I HONESTLY read and review any book whether bought or given to me. If I did not like the book I would definitely not give a rave review or recommend it.
