American Tobacco Cards: A Price Guide and Checklist Review

American Tobacco Cards: A Price Guide and Checklist
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This comprehensive and superbly organized work is richly supplemented with numerous color and B/W photographs. A brief and informative history about various tobacco products/inserts and manufactures is provided. The book is organized principally into two units: N-series for 19th century cards (N1-N694) and T-series for 20th century cards (T1-T177). Each entry includes a brief description of the set and card appearance (front and back). The overwhelming majority of entries include an actual size photograph of a representative card (front and back) and a list of all cards in the set. Comments pertaining to card variations and prices are useful. The edge of each page is labeled with the set number to aid with rapid location of descriptions and card images. The work is peppered throughout with short vignettes and essays (published previously in various trade journals) by Dr. Terry Mitchell about specific sets or card themes. Although this is a soft cover book, the pages are printed on high grade gloss stock paper that tolerates repeated handling. Suprisingly, the book is neither overwhelming or boorish in its presentation. The brief descriptions and inclusion of images for virtually every set are effective strategies and make the book exceptionally user-friendly. No other work to date has done such a masterful job at capturing the variety of subjects, visual appeal, and historical allure of tobacco cards. This book is a must-have item for novice collectors and enthusiasts.

Garage Sale: Manual & Price Guide Review

Garage Sale: Manual and Price Guide

I have a yearly garage sale. I am a librarian. Therefore, I've read or skimmed many, many books on the subject. I found myself ordering this one again and again from other libraries. Then, I realized it was out of print. Panic! What if the other libraries decided the condition was so bad they had to get rid of it. So, I bought a used copy through Amazon. It's a great manual for having a garage sale, but what makes it invaluable is the price guide. When I have no idea what to price something (like the things I have to ask my husband what they are?), I look here for guidelines. In my opinion, it is the best garage sale book around.

I love this book and take it with me to every auction or flea market. I was not able to find everything in it but how could you? The nice thing about this book is that it is the perfect size to carry or drop in your purse and not a burden. This is a great book to get kids inspired to collect flea market finds and teach them how to do the research. Once you start looking items up you can't stop.

Antique Trader Royal Doulton Price Guide Review

Antique Trader Royal Doulton Price Guide

This is a good resource for Royal Doulton items not found in the Charlton Standard Catalogue. The two books together will give you a pretty comprehensive resource for identifying & valuing "most" Royal Doulton pieces.
This duplicates a small portion of the info in Charlton Standard, but includes most things missing from it. It is a great resource for animals, Bunnykins, Character Jugs, Flambe, Burslem, Lambert Art wares and more!
To any Royal Doulton collectors, I recommend BOTH of these volumes! (Charlton Standard Catalogue & Antique Trader)

Antique Trader Vintage Magazines Price Guide Review

Antique Trader Vintage Magazines Price Guide

When we moved into our 1920's home,we found boxes left in the attic filled with old fashion magazines. My husband was ready to trash the lot, but being of the pack rat variety I found a home for them in my office.
With the help of The Antique Trader Vintage Magazines Price Guide the door was opened for me to the world of old magazines. The beautiful color photos helped me to easily identify my boxes of "trash" and give them a value.
Most important, the love affair the authors have for magazines comes across in their historical entries. The unique way they organize collectible magazine people into Sleepers like OZ artist W.W. Denslow or Stars like F.Scott Fitzgerald makes me want to haunt local yard sales. My major problem with the book was that I became so fascinated that I wanted more. The book could easily have been double in size and information and kept my interest as both a reader and for use as a desk reference. With what I've learned, our next home will hopefully be an 1890's Victorian with a basement full of Godey's Lady's Book magazines.

Antique Trader Antiques & Collectibles 2009 Price Guide (Antique Trader Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide) Review

Antique Trader Antiques and Collectibles 2009 Price Guide (Antique Trader Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this because the 2008 version had great reviews compared to other antique guides. One of the strengths was they had more pictures than their competitors. Well, it does have lots of pictures. But there are so few items listed for each section that it is of little use, unless they happen to have a picture of something you are looking for. They do cover the marks to look for in each section.
Some sections are much bigger than others. For example, bottles are covered well with lots of pictures of different types. I can see now that the long lists in Kovels are more useful if you know what you have. For instance Hopalong Cassidy items would have more listings in Kovels than in Traders.
So, if you want to see lots of pictures to browse and help with identification of what to look for in more detailed books, then this is a good book for that. The pictures are in color and well done.

Antique Trader Collectible Paperback Price Guide Review

Antique Trader Collectible Paperback Price Guide
Average Reviews:

This book falls short as a reference book or a price guide although the pictures are nice. Of the 1000+ paperbacks in my collection from the 40's through the 60's, I found 47 in this book. No publisher fared well but Ace Books seemed particularly unrepresented. Authors such as Anderson, Norton, Nourse, Silverberg, Leinster are either absent or barely mentioned. I wasn't expecting a rigorous compendium but I didn't like the sampler found here. Anyone know of a GOOD price guide?

hello, this review is for the 2nd edition, which i'm sure is similar. great format, which touches on just enough of each furniture style, with clear reference to which era/style the furniture is indicative, with a brief detailed paragraph as well. nice and brief intro about historical periods and terms (examples of pediments, feet, etc.). nice color photos, very concise, i'm not sure about the accuracy of prices, but very good as an intro to the antique furniture medium.
