Her descriptions are carefully crafted and authentic and her presentation of native American beliefs, customs, and rituals shows intensive research into and sensitive recognition of the values of native Americans, as well as the tensions and challenges that occur when two cultures clash. Ms Larson's book also reflects a deep concern for nature and a recognition that whites have not been as careful in their use of nature as native Americans have. All of this is in the context of an exciting story that one can not put down once one starts reading. Anyone interested in the beliefs, legends and values of the Plains Indians will find this story fascinating. The Legend of Prairie Island is especially important in illustrating the importance of recognizing the values in other traditions and the importance of people of different backgrounds and ethnicities in working together to preserve and protect the things of nature that we all share.
