I thought I knew him but this little book gave me insights into his and my life that still to this day amaze me. Just a little book that will let the common man or woman feel there is hope a nd recovery. This man saved my life!!

The Choices of Men: A Novel of Male Power and Sexuality in a Feminist Age Review

The Choices of Men: A Novel of Male Power and Sexuality in a Feminist Age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Choices of Men is a book for both men and women. For men, it is an especially entertaining story in an era where men are searching to understand feminism and struggling to reinvent a meaningful male role in a changing world. For women, it is a poignant reminder that the shortcomings often attributed to men are ingrained in many women also. Over the last decade or so I have read many books and seen many movies portraying the feminist struggle. Most have helped to increase my sensitivity to the elimination of oppression in all its forms. The best portrayals are those that promote introspection, awareness, a willingness to consider change and, eventually, dialogue. Not those which leave either gender humiliated or greatly diminished. Choices of Men is a story that engages the best in us, leads us to explore our own solutions to pain and confusion, and gives us an ending which can lead to healthy dialogue. Dialogue about the dilemmas, paradoxes, and choices we all face as we seek greater equality and fairness in our most important relationships.

The Choices of Men is a fiery novel of gender politics written from the rarely heard male perspective.Guy Scheels traded the free-love '70s for a wife, career and home. Now he finds he relinquished too much power over his lifestyle, career, and the custody of his child by a former marriage. Worse, he has relinquished his sexual power. He is maddeningly frustrated by his wife's sexual disinterest and by the culture's disapproval of extra-marital sex in any form - - in fact, its virtual war on male sexuality.Guy has choices to make. His decisions and actions will stimulate men to think about their own choices. Women will be drawn into the plot out of curiosity, then ponder what choices the men in their lives are preparing to make. The story culminates in an explosive series of events that propel Guy to declare new rules by which he will live. Far from being misogynist, he ceases blaming women and assumes responsibility for his own action - - and inaction. The Choices of Men is intended to provoke a gender dialogue. For too long, we've been hearing a monologue and women have been doing the talking. Choices gives men a voice, too.www.choicesofmen.com

I know Whilhelm (actually I always called him Willi) we met 1955.
Surprisingly to me he used mine and my brother,s names in the book.
Which we did not mind at all.
I really enjoyed reading his book. It was an easy readible novel once
I got over the first few pages. All his life Willi strived for the best and
worked hard for it. Willi Congratulation on your book. I know you will not
sell as many book copies as that George Bush, but i rather read yours any day.

When The Owl Cries Review

When The Owl Cries

I laughed, I cried, this book became part of me. The characters were true, the history is right and the only reason this book won't get made into a movie or mini series would be that it's too real. The vision of how Native Americans co existed and the troubling questions of slavery are secondary to the daily stuggle of subsistence living on the frontier. The highs are towering and the tragedies are heart breaking. Just like real life. Somebody do Oprah a favor and pass this winner on to her. Everyone should read this. The questions today are no less profound than they were then. My new favorite book.

A Place In Time Review

A Place In Time

This book stars one of the last of the real cowboys, who lived on the cusp between the old West and our world of today. How could he know, as he herded cattle, broke broncos, befriended nomadic Indians and led pack trains into the Montana high country that his way of life was passing away forever? The author portrays nature and draws the panorama of Big Sky country with such skill you think you are there, discovering hidden wild berries, fording rivers of broken ice, and feeling the spring wind against your face. The finely drawn characters could only exist in this mountain-man world where the object was survival, and they wouldn't have it any other way. The twist ending reaches around and tugs your heart strings with compassion for this hero of the real Old West. Anyone who enjoys authentic stories of real "cowboys and Indians" would love this book!

Time has not dimmed my memories of our ranch on Petty Creek, and it seems necessaryto recount tales of living there. I don't know why, except that the country slides intofocus as a place out of time, and worthy of mention in a foreign world that developedaround it. So begins the introduction to A Place In Time, thestory of a man's journey from an unrestrained youth as he hunted and survived in thenatural, rugged mountain world of the Indian, to his desperate attempt to hold onto thatlife as the world changed around him. His mountain environmentwas filled with colorful characters, each of them contributors to a kaleidoscope ofintrigue, humor, and adventure, both on the ranch and in surrounding areas. A reciprocal dependence of men and animals is vividly portrayedthrough the horses who trailed the mountain world with him, some of them previously nottouched by man. Some accounts of animal companions end tragically in their vigorousexistence; all of them touch sympathies of those who harbor an appreciation of thenatural world. The story's owner is older now, but very muchalive. The account of his life and location, however, are distant in the experience ofmost in today's world. His life surpasses the boundaries of his own region, bringing thereader to confront in the end, the painful changes that have been inflicted upon hiswilderness world. A Place In Time is a vibrant account of the waymany would like it to be again, the way most never knew it was.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Six Rooms and a Path: A Childhood in the Great Depression

My parents were born during the Great Depression so I thought this would enlighten me as to the times they grew up in. It did. Times were very hard but this isn't just a story about hard times. This is a very loving family and a joy to read about. Mr. Pollard is a good storyteller. It really felt like I was reading someone's personal, unedited memoirs. I wish my Daddy would do this. What a wonderful treasure Mr. Pollard has given his family and to anyone who likes to "go back in time" as much as is possible for us mere mortals.

When Lightning Strikes Review

When Lightning Strikes
Average Reviews:

I really enjoyed this book because, even though it is fiction, the life and the way things were done in that time are factual. It is describing a true way of life, and the way a certain group of people lived during that time, and how they related to each other.
The book is very factual to that way of life, and time. The book has all the emotions, of excitement, humor, romance, passion and moments of breathtaking suspense. There were times I could not put the book down. The scenic descriptions were so detailed, it was easy to see the picture in your mind.
As a senior adult, I really enjoyed this book. I recommend this book for all ages above 13.

The story of Stuart the Donkey was inspired by events that took place in a grassy field beneath the shadows of the Bitterroot Mountains near the author's home in Montana. Stuart, a shy and cautious young donkey and his mother spent the summer months basking in the long sun-filled warm days in a field amongst young playful mules and their mothers. The summer months opened a new world to Stuart as he learns valuable lessons from his wise and caring friend Freckles the fawn and his patient loving mother.

A Journey West Review

A Journey West
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"A Journey West" is that sort of book which, half-way through, the reader begins to dread having to finish. Boloker's American West of 1888 is both sharply observed and meticulously detailed. His characters, from the naive and impetuous Jacob Rocker, to the loyal and courageous Hannah Jung, are memorably drawn and fully believable. But as true to life and credible as this book is, there is also a interwoven thread that almost touches on magic, with events that challenge logic yet which are wholly consistent with the central metaphor that life, lived well and with integrity, is a journey. Beyond referring the reader to the enigmatic cover showing a Star of David etched into a turqouise stone, I'll close here rather than reveal more of the plot.

In 1888, at the behest of his dying mother, Jacob Rocker, a young Jew, sets off on a journey from New York City to California. He endures the hardships of shipboard life passing through New Orleans and Galveston. He learns about the frontier as a freight hauler traveling through a chain of Texas army posts from San Antonio to El Paso. His journey through wilderness, the notorious Jornada del Muerto desert and the New Mexico mountains, involves struggles with his past and conflicting prospects for his future. He faces deprivation, bigotry, pain and pleasure. Jacob encounters some dynamic characters including the Apache chiefs Geronimo and Victorio, Buffalo soldier Col. Ronald Mackenzie, Santa Fe Archbishop Jean Lamy and territorial governor Lew Wallace. He falls in love with Hannah Jung, a young white woman who had been kidnapped by renegade Mescalero Indians. Rocker's search for a meaningful life on his pilgrimage is as relevant today as it was in A JOURNEY WEST.

Duane Howard has created a wonderfully descriptive account of the mysterious mountain man of the West in the 1820s. Zack Clayton is a self-sufficient hunter, trapper, and entrepreneur able to befriend Indians, negotiate business deals within a developing economy and even manage to do a little courting along the way. Through this honest and admirable character, Howard shows us how the west was won with honor and dignity. Zack gives his handshake for a business contract that he honors even after years spent in the wilderness alone. When his best friend is killed he travels back East to deliver his partner's share of their trappings and tell his family of his demise. Through such deeds, Zack becomes known as a man who can be trusted. He also dispenses his own brand of justice to the bad guys always aiming for a punishment that will bring redemption wherever possible.

Little Pills: An Army Story Review

Little Pills: An Army Story

The book is about a medical doctor who was in the army and was posted to various posts throughout the Southwest. In particular, he was posted to a number of posts in the New Mexico territory in the 1860s or so. It was very interesting to read his "reviews/comments" on the posts and what life was like to the residents. It ended up with him bringing his wife and daughter out to one of the posts. His daughter died from some reason, was put into a metal casket and taken back to the mid-west.
The book was initally (1918) published in a fairly limited edition. I never though I'd ever be able to read it.
I first heard about the book from a column written by Historian Marc Simmons (in The Santa Fe New Mexican and the Socorro El Defensor Chieftain and other papers over time). He explored the "contents" of the most interesting parts with the empahsis on New Mexico.
As I said, I never though I'd ever be able to read the original. I idly went on line to AMAZON and wanted to see if the orginal was available, and for how much. Imagnine my surprise when the re-print popped up -- I immedately bought it. When it came, I immediately began reading it and stayed up until the wee hours to finish it. It was very interesting!
I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in Southwestern history, especially New Mexcio.

PLVS VLTRA: The Merchant of Panama Review

PLVS VLTRA: The Merchant of Panama

Quasi-historical in nature, exhaustive in conveyance, the novella's quest is bi-fold as relates to man and his treasure; tenacity, resilience and perseverance, with an overlay of "pundonor" -- that ethereal substance from which pride emanates. The author adorns his autobiographical novel with beautifully mastered scenes of love and maritime splendor; living through the eyes of his central character, a woman of many wiles, the perilous life of those intricately involved in the formation of what was then and is now the greatest trading post in the history of the world, Panama.
