From the time when the Mississippi/Yazoo Delta was virgin and nearly impenetrable forest to today's almost treeless fields, from cotton to catfish, Mr. Bell spins a tale that transcends politics and race, a tale well documented, yet smoothly flowing and utterly fascinating. He paints poignant pictures both of humanity and of inhumanity. His writing is lyric as well as powerful. His pictures of Southern life, of plantation owners and of their slaves, make the Delta and its history come to life. The "evolution" of which he writes is far more than simply the economics of the Delta, but includes the politics of the State of Mississippi and, indeed, of the South following the Civil War. He has a keen insight into the ability of those in power to manipulate not only the federal and state governments, but also the lives of those not in power.
