"Frontier Kentucky" is one of those books one might not expect a lot from: small, short, and apparently written for young readers. Having just read a couple of top quality histories (the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for history's ("Washington's Crossing" by David Hackett Fischer, and "Cavalryman Of A Lost Cause: A Biography of J. E. B. Stuart" by Jeffry D. Wert) and having started "Almost A Miracle: The American Victory In The War of Independence" by John Ferling, I was in need of a break for some lighter reading.
I found Rice's book to be far more than just met the eye. While it is, indeed, lighter reading compared to the others I mentioned, it is still good reading. "Frontier Kentucky" is a part of The Kentucky Bicentennial Bookshelf, a series of small books about Kentucky history and personalities. Having read several other more detailed books on Kentucky history, I enjoyed the summarizing, fly-over survey that characterizes this book. It is not strong on detail, leaves out many parts of stories, does not venture very deeply into some of the why's and wherefore's, but does serve to tie events together in a way that a deeply detailed presentation cannot do.
The one real weakness I found in this book (which I bought at a library sale for only 25 cents) is the appalling lack of maps. Other than the one on the inner face page, there are only three maps in the whole 132 pages. Plus, owing to the size of the book, 5" X 8", I literally had to employ a magnifying glass to read the map print. It does have 8 pages of pictures and portraits which add interest, but 8 pages of maps would have been far more preferable to this reader.
Rice has, I think, fulfilled his goal: to present Kentucky's rich history from its beginning in the early to middle 1600's up to 1783, the end of the American Revolution, in a simple, readable and interesting way. He will appeal, possibly, mostly to young readers, and wanna-be historians like me who enjoy the occasional historical survey to tie the host of details together in a memorable way. Having read Rice's efforts, I feel that I understand the big picture better than before.
Four stars for interest and readability. Good maps would have added the other star.

" Otis Rice tells the dramatic story of how the first state beyond the mountains came into being. Kentucky dates its settled history from the founding of Harrodsburg in 1774 and of Boonesborough in 1775. But the drama of frontier Kentucky had its beginnings a full century before the arrival of James Harrod and Daniel Boone. The early history of the Bluegrass state is a colorful and significant chapter in the expansion of the American frontier. Rice traces the development of Kentucky through the end of the Revolutionary War. He deals with four major themes: the great imperial rivalry between England and France in the mid-eighteenth century for control of the Ohio Valley; the struggle of white settlers to possess lands claimed by the Indians and the liquidation of Indian rights through treaties and bloody conflicts; the importance of the land, the role of the speculator, and the progress of settlement; the conquest of a wilderness bountiful in its riches but exacting in its demands and the planting of political, social, and cultural institutions. Included are maps that show the changing boundaries of Kentucky as it moved toward statehood.

This book to me is a classic. Koontz brilliantly constructs this plot and makes it a joy to see unfold. I read this book a few years back and I still remember the pleasure I got from it. A couple months ago I gave this book to my girlfriend to read I got her hooked on Koontz now I am like her Koontz supplier hehehe. Anyways I dared her to figure out the plot before books end and to tell me. She had quite the imagination but could never come up with the plot. After she finsihed she was astounded by the sheer brilliance of this book. So why did I give this book 5 stars quite simply because it was a hard book to put down. I seen from other reviews some were disappointed with the ending but I bet for that moment of time when they were reading it all were captivated just as I was!!!

The Comanchero Frontier: A History of New Mexican-Plains Indian Relations

This was apparently originally published over 40 years ago as Kenner's doctoral thesis. The writing style might reflect that, but it's a very good, very readable narrative about a subject that does not seem well represented in Southwest studies. After a brief overview of the Pueblo lands before the Spaniards' arrival, the book delves headlong into 18th and early 19th century history of the New Mexico/Texas borderlands and does a very good job laying out a very interesting story. Good stuff, and plenty of source citations to keep us happy. I recommend it!

Best Practice: New Standards for Teaching and Learning in America's Schools, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

As part of my school's curriculum committee, Best Practices is on our assigned reading list. After reading the introduction I was shocked to find the book not only interesting, but also easy to read. The book's main premise is that school reform, what ever direction a school chooses to take, is a process, not a magic potion. Meaningful school reform, according to the authors, could and prbably should take at least three years. No one standardized test and no one curriculum can be a cure-all for improving student performance. Best Practice tells how to begin the process of reform to produce improved student performance in an environment dedicated to that process.

I first balked at the high price of this book. It didn't matter that it was written by professional futures trader, George Angell. I bought it and studied the different spread trades that he dedicates a chapter each to. This book will be useful for years to come from taking these trades. The price is well worth it in just one or two contract spreads.

Prechter's Perspective: Conversations with Bob Prechter, Legendary Market Theorist Review

Prechter's Perspective: Conversations with Bob Prechter, Legendary Market Theorist
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this interview-style book published in 2004, Bob presents his own perspectives on subjects as far-ranging as Elliot Wave Principle (obviously) to the way he believes that the 'normal' cause and effect relationships people take for granted in a market environment (and the world in general) are actually inverted.
As well as a detailed and personal discussion of the application of Elliott Wave in the context of the practical uses in actual trading, Bob gives some simple but excellent rules for trading in general. These include:
* Having a method
* Having discipline
* Gaining experience
* Accepting responsibility for your actions
* Accommodating losses
* Accepting huge gains
Although an interview format book is sometimes difficult for some people to extract the true `value' from, it is well worth the effort of studying this book since it can give you some useful insights into things that you may currently take for granted as `truths' that are actually detrimental to your trading performance.
The main novel theme in this book is about Bob's concept of `Socionomics', where social mood and psychology are the result of movements in the markets not the other way round. Believing that the market goes down because people are depressed, for example is a complete reversal of the `conventional wisdom' and thinking about it deeply can lead to some interesting conclusions and beliefs that have a significant practical impact on how one approaches trading.
Discussing specific approaches to trading, and how Bob thinks about them is a useful and informative look into the trading methods of an obviously accomplished and passionate market participant and also gives a context for the application of Elliott Wave Principle. All-in-all it should be considered a very worthwhile read.

But when she meets Carson, a cute and flirty fellow volunteer, she is happy that she joined the program. Or, at least, she thinks she is. Carson's "old friend" Stephanie keeps showing up at all the wrong times. And Kathleen's mother keeps complaining that she needs Kathleen at home. successful trading system development requires a firm grasp of financial markets, statistics, and clever computer programming and Mr. Kaufman offers a little taste of each to his readers. The chapters on "market reality", "risk and return", "trend following" and "robustness testing" are well written and very helpful, while sections on "neural networks", "fuzzy logic", and "expert systems" are basically filler material and of not much practical use. All said, it is one of the better books on the subject.

The Very Latest E-Mini Trading: Using Market Anticipation to Trade Electronic Futures Review

The Very Latest E-Mini Trading: Using Market Anticipation to Trade Electronic Futures
Average Reviews:

An excellent primer for the beginning trader and good insights for more experienced traders. What stands out about this book is that Mr. Gutmann is not a professional trader, but got into trading like most of his readers probably got into trading, by thinking this looks like an easy way to make money (ha, ha). However, unlike 90% of beginning traders, Mr. Gutmann has become consistently profitable. Reading about his journey to profitability is a must for new traders. It takes hard work and he has some good advice.
The middle of the book is a detailed explanation of his trading plan. There are many concepts explained. New traders should not get overwhelmed with all the set-ups but initially focus on pull back or retracement strategies and stick to one market. I'm impressed that Mr. Gutmann can trade so many set-ups.
The set-ups are straight forward (most are available in TradeStation and the author will send you the indicators and TradeStation workspaces for a modest fee) and you won't find much more information from on-line trading schools or seminars. More experienced traders will appreciate the discussion on the expected values of one, two and three tier trades.
I enjoyed the book and can't wait to hear more from Mr. Gutmann as his trading evolves.

"Options Demystified" is a worthy addition to McGraw-Hill's "Demystified" series, easily living up to its claim of being a self-teaching guide. Hundreds of books have been written on the subject of puts and calls, but this large-format paperback is by far the best I've come across for the aspiring option trader. It is comprehensive, well organized, generously illustrated and easy to understand. The book also includes many quizzes and a "final exam" to help the reader master the material.
The author, Thomas McCafferty, has been around commodities, stocks and options for many years and written numerous books on those subjects. This one not only lays out the basics of the options game, it also condenses much of the author's impressive horse-sense into a very readable and relatively short work (251 pages, plus an excellent index). "Options Demystified" should be on every trader's shelf. Even pros will find some pearls here, including a chapter on "trading philosophy" that's perfectly attuned to today's frothy markets. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone looking for an options primer that is both comprehensive and easy to imbibe.

The Ambiguous Iroquois Empire: The Covenant Chain Confederation of Indian Tribes with English Colonies Review

The Ambiguous Iroquois Empire: The Covenant Chain Confederation of Indian Tribes with English Colonies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Francis Jennings, long associated with the Newbury Library American Indian collections has brought his vast knowledge to bear on the subject of the Iriquois as the fearsome 5 or 6 nations who independently cowed both their fellow tribes and the English and French colonists. He proves it wasn't so with so many documents of which we have never heard in our schoolbook history texts that I wonder how such material escaped notice previously. In the process he slays some American Sacred Cows such as Francis Parkman. One learns that the Indian frontier was no such thing and didn't exist but was a commonly inhabited piece of terrain, peopled by various tribes and the European invaders who traded with them. Relations were, for the most part, reasonably amicable, which accounts for the fact that during later wars the Eastern Indians frequently exhibited what we call civilized treatment of enemies and prisoners. (Of course there were the exceptions, usually well justified.) But in the beginning, the Dutch, Swedes, English and French, all found it necessary to deal with the various tribes quite diplomatically in order to survive, and use them in their wars of empire with one another. Furs in return for trade goods were king. The undoubted reality is such a vast contrast with the accepted picture of our frontier that this book, as well as Jennings others in this series, should be required reading to repair the damage done in our schools by claptrap such as Parkman and other revered historians who followed his lead, writing off the Indians as barabarians and the frontier as a clearly delineated line across which whites stepped only if they were willing to take their lives into their hands. Instead we find two cultures living amicably in common communities up until the first half of the 1700's when the balance was upset by driving out the Indians such as the Delewares and Shawnees so that they located in the Ohio country and became relatively independent. The Iriquois had a large hand in this and it was their undoing. Read the book. It is a complicated subject but well worth digesting. I recommend reading it in small doses and having an atlas nearby.

The Ioway Indians (Civilization of the American Indian) Review

The Ioway Indians (Civilization of the American Indian)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the only book in print on the Ioway Indian tribe, originally located in Iowa, and now in two branches, one in Kansas-Nebraska and one in Oklahoma. The first edition was hardback and published in 1979; this second edition is paperback and published in 1995, with a valuable NEW section about the modern Ioway. The updated version listed here has an additional and very useful chapter that brings the book up to contemporary times.
"This account is the first extensive ethnohistory of the Ioway Indians, whose influence -- out of all proportion to their numbers -- stemmed partly from the strategic location of their homeland between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. ...Beginning with archaeological sites in northeast Iowa, Martha Royce Blaine traces Ioway history from ancient to modern times. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, French, Spanish, and English traders vied for the tribe's favor and for permission to cross their lands. The Ioways fought in the French and Indian War in New York, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, but ultimately their influence waned as they slowly lost control of their sovereignty and territory. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Ioways were separated in reservations in Nebraska, Kansas, and Indian Territory [Oklahoma]. A new preface by the author carries the story to modern times and discusses the present status of and issues concerning the Oklahoma and the Kansas and Nebraska Ioways." [From the book cover]
This is an essential book for members of the tribe, for those researching the Ioway's history and culture, and for anyone interested in the history and landscape of the American Midwest. Some have remarked the book is a bit academic in its approach rather than aimed at the popular market. I am a member of the Ioway tribe myself, and am a scholar of our language, history, archaeology, and culture, and I highly recommend it.
Every Iowa tribal member should have a copy of this book, as well as anyone else interested in Iowa history!

Red Cloud's Folk: A History of the Oglala Sioux Indians (Civilization of the American Indian Series) Review

Red Cloud's Folk: A History of the Oglala Sioux Indians (Civilization of the American Indian Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the title states, this is not a biography of Red Cloud. It is, instead, the history of his people-the Oglala-as far back as the middle of the 17th century. However, while Hyde's speculation on the early history is probably the most valuable part, the various migrations and splits of the Sioux are a little hard to follow and make for slow going. It is not until he reaches more familiar territory, from about the Grattan Fight on, that the pace picks up.
This work, originally written in the 1930's and updated in the late 50's appears to be very well researched. However it has it's flaws. Hyde has difficulty overcoming a certain cultural bias, and he has a habit of picking and choosing the information that most supports his point of view. For example, time and again, he laments the poor memory of Indians when it comes to relating their own history, and belittles them for mythologizing certain events at the expense of accuracy. However he insists that it was the Crazy Horse village which J.J. Reynolds attacked and destroyed on the Powder in 1876, and not a Cheyenne village as the Indians of the time asserted, and as is now widely accepted by historians. And in this case he bases his theory on the accounts of certain Indians who said that they saw Crazy Horse fleeing up the bluffs with a small child on his back. The notion of course is rediculous. Crazy Horse's own daughter had died by then, and the idea that the great war chief could come up with nothing better to do during an attack than pick up stray children makes no sense.
Hyde also asserts without doubt, that Crazy Horse, in his last days was planning to break out of the Red Cloud agency with his band, and was not simply escaping to Spotted Tail for sanctuary from his enemies. While this may be true, he has absolutely no evidence to base it on. Having said this, Hyde's habit of pronouncing opposing views as "blatantly absurd" is somewhat refreshing, and keeps the narrative more interesting.
Anyone who studies the Plains Indians must add this to their library, however, they should keep in mind, that it represents only one point of view.

The westward drive of the warlike Sioux Indians along a thousand miles of prairie and woodland, from the upper reaches of the Mississippi to the lower Powder River in Montana, is one of the epic migrations of history. From about 1660 to the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the Teton Sioux swept away all opposition: Arikaras, Ponkas, Crees, Crows, Cheyennes--all fell away and dispersed as the Sioux advanced, until the invaders ranged over a vast territory in the northwest, hunting buffalo and raiding their neighbors. During the ensuing years of heavy conflict, between 1865 and 1877, Red Cloud of the Oglalas stood out as one of the greatest of the Sioux leaders.

A Rendezvous Reader: Tall, Tangled, and True Tales of the Mountain Men 1805-1850
Average Reviews:

This is a worthy addition to the long shelf of good books about the doings of a few men who explored and adventured in the wilderness of the great West around about the 1820s and 1830s. Never perhaps did so few lead such exhilarating and dangerous lives.
The "Reader" consists of 151 brief excerpts from mostly contemporary writings. Here for example is William Ashley's 1822 advertisement for "ONE HUNDRED MEN, to ascend the Missouri River to its source." One of the respondents was Jim Bridger. There are writings here from painters Alfred Jacob Miller and George Catlin, historian Francis Parkman, writer Washington Irving, and by the Mountain Men themselves: tall tales from the likes of Joe Meek and Black Harris, the story of John Colter's amazing flight from the Blackfeet, Hugh Glass's encounter with a grizzly, and Kit Carson's amazement when he encountered a Dime novel in which he himself "was represented as a great hero, slaying Indians by the hundred."Each section of the book has an informative introduction from the editors.
The selections run the full range of topics from fiction to what the Mountain Men wore, how they trapped beaver, and their sometimes violent, sometimes connubial relations with the Indian tribes they encountered. It's a good book to page through looking for interesting selections. You'll find many.
