Another five stars collection of (partly) unreleased tales by Hisownself.
Do not miss the return of Reverend Jebidiah Rains from "Dead in the West" his smoking guns fight again against Evil!
Another interesting issue is the reprinting of the novellette "The Events Concerning a Nude Fold-Out Found in a Harlequin Romance": pure Lansdale, yummm...
But all the contents are outstanding so be sure you'll have a good read.

Malice in Maggody (An Arly Hanks Mystery) Review

Malice in Maggody (An Arly Hanks Mystery)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Meet Chief of Police, Arly Hanks. She's back home in Maggody, Arkansas, population 755, recovering from a nasty divorce. She wanted some quiet time to decompress and gather her wits about her, and that's just what she got. Life in Maggody is slow, really slow. There's no crime to speak of, and about the only action she ever sees is a car wreck out on the highway, once every month or so. Her biggest chief of police decisions usually involve where to set up the speed trap, in the school zone, or at the signal light. So it comes as a big surprise when two real crime cases fall her way on the same day. First a former Maggody resident, now housed at the state correctional institution escapes and looks to be heading home. Then an EPA contract specialist sent to sign the paperwork for an unwanted sewage treatment plant that the residents of Maggody are sure is going to pollute their swimming and fishing holes, goes missing. Add to that the murder of a local, and it looks like Arly is going to have to buckle down and get busy, fast. With the whole town tight lipped and stonewalling her investigation, it's going to take all her cunning and training to sort out all this mayhem and madness, and get to the truth..... Sit down and get comfortable, Joan Hess is about to take you on a roller coaster of a ride through the Ozarks. This is a light, comical mystery, easily read in one sitting, that will have you smiling, chortling, and laughing out loud. Her entertaining story line is well paced and clever, and her writing is crisp, witty and full of irreverent dialogue and back-woods southern humor. But it's Ms Hess' well drawn, engaging and original characters that really make this novel stand out, and once you've gotten to know Maggody's finest and not so finest, you'll be hooked for sure. Malice In Maggody is the first of a marvelous and delightful series. Do yourself a big favor, start here at the beginning, and read them all.

The Choices of Men: A Novel of Male Power and Sexuality in a Feminist Age Review

The Choices of Men: A Novel of Male Power and Sexuality in a Feminist Age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Choices of Men is a book for both men and women. For men, it is an especially entertaining story in an era where men are searching to understand feminism and struggling to reinvent a meaningful male role in a changing world. For women, it is a poignant reminder that the shortcomings often attributed to men are ingrained in many women also. Over the last decade or so I have read many books and seen many movies portraying the feminist struggle. Most have helped to increase my sensitivity to the elimination of oppression in all its forms. The best portrayals are those that promote introspection, awareness, a willingness to consider change and, eventually, dialogue. Not those which leave either gender humiliated or greatly diminished. Choices of Men is a story that engages the best in us, leads us to explore our own solutions to pain and confusion, and gives us an ending which can lead to healthy dialogue. Dialogue about the dilemmas, paradoxes, and choices we all face as we seek greater equality and fairness in our most important relationships.

The Choices of Men is a fiery novel of gender politics written from the rarely heard male perspective.Guy Scheels traded the free-love '70s for a wife, career and home. Now he finds he relinquished too much power over his lifestyle, career, and the custody of his child by a former marriage. Worse, he has relinquished his sexual power. He is maddeningly frustrated by his wife's sexual disinterest and by the culture's disapproval of extra-marital sex in any form - - in fact, its virtual war on male sexuality.Guy has choices to make. His decisions and actions will stimulate men to think about their own choices. Women will be drawn into the plot out of curiosity, then ponder what choices the men in their lives are preparing to make. The story culminates in an explosive series of events that propel Guy to declare new rules by which he will live. Far from being misogynist, he ceases blaming women and assumes responsibility for his own action - - and inaction. The Choices of Men is intended to provoke a gender dialogue. For too long, we've been hearing a monologue and women have been doing the talking. Choices gives men a voice, too.www.choicesofmen.com

In The Wilds Of South America: Six Years Of Exploration In Columbia, Venezuela, British Guiana, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, And Brazil

It took me a month to finish reading this wonderfully adventurous book. It is an historical account of the early exploration of the more remote parts of the South American continent. Being that I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, I wanted to read every book on the continent dealing with adventure, whether it be fictional or not. This book was so great that it will remain on my bookshelf forever, unless I decide to reread it again. The author wrote with some fine descriptions of the flora and fauna in the area, so that I could imagine the beauty and fragrances of the rainforests, mountains, and trails. They had encounters with many people living in remote hamlets and on farms, as well as small towns, which I appreciated knowing about with respect to their customs. I ordered two copies by mistake, but I immediately knew that our local library would be thrilled to own a copy of this treasured book. I look forward to rereading this lovely gem in the future. I only hope that someday I will have the chance to return to Venezuela to explore it's vast beauty, even though it will never be as wild as it once was seen through the eyes of the author.

Baby Grape and Huskey Review

Baby Grape and Huskey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is 1845 as this engaging young adult novel by Thom Rodgers opens with a scene too familiar to both children and adults. Bullying has always been a problem and for young Toby the morning conflict is with an older boy known to terrorize the other kids that work in the area shops. He isn't about to let the older boy steal his pocket knife--- the same pocket knife his father gave him. Using a bull whip for maximum effectiveness, Toby manages to get his pocket knife back as well as teach the older boy a lesson he will never forget.
At age 14, Toby has experienced a lot and is supporting the family by working as an apprentice to Abe in a local workshop. They are almost finished making a large whiskey still Toby's main job has been to get inside the still and hold the buck hammer against the rivets while Abe pounds them into place from the outside. It is noisy work but Toby is glad to have work in the workshop his father once worked in.
But, change is about to upheave Toby's young life yet again. Just days after his father died, Toby is wanted by the police for the well-deserved whipping he gave that boy, and is going to have to leave his Pittsburg home. The shop owner, Mr. Rodgers, is going to help Toby by sending him with a guy named Lew to deliver the still he has been working on to the new owner up in Sligo. Going north for a hundred miles and back will take weeks and hopeful by the time Toby gets back everything will be sorted out. Toby is not sure Lew is anybody he wants to be with based on what he remembers his father saying about the man, but with the cops and a judge looking for him, he does not have much of a choice.
What follows is a very enjoyable tale featuring Toby and the perils of his road trip to deliver the still and come back home. The perils are many, the friends few, and the young man is tested in ways he never saw coming. This is the tale of a young man who finds himself while discovering not only his inner resources but when to listen to others and follow their lead. Told from his viewpoint, the author skillfully shows the challenges he faces and the young man begins to head into a maturity one would not have thought possible at the beginning of this very good tale.
Well written, the tale features plenty of action and suspense along with the beginnings of a first romance. Toby is a character that many, especially young boys, will relate to and shows increasing maturity throughout the work. A grand adventure that is sure to please not only the intended audience but the adults in their lives this book would also work well in the classroom as it imparts history at the same time it entertains.
First in the series, this young adult novel is an adventure that is hard to put down. It is followed by "Baby Grape And The River Folk."Review copy was a PDF provided by the author in exchange for my objective review.Kevin R. Tipple (c)2011

Identifying Horse-Drawn Farm Implements Review

Short book, well written with generally excellent pictures. The book would be better if the author had visited additional states and included more horse-drawn equipment as most of the examples are from the Texas, Arkansas area so equipment from New England, Upper Mid-west, Great Plains, Central Basin, California and Pacific Northwest is not identified.

Delta Blues Guitar (Oak Anthology of Blues Guitar) Review

Delta Blues Guitar (Oak Anthology of Blues Guitar)
Average Reviews:

This book contains, in tablature and standard notation, songs by a number of great Delta bluesmen -- Charley Patton, Son House, Robert Johnson, Willie Brown, Skip James and others. Grossman does not in every case write out the notation for the entire song; a song might be represented by its intro, first verse and closing guitar lick, or maybe just by an extended break. In each case, Grossman gives you enough information that you can sit down with the recording and learn to play these classic songs.
Interview snippets, history and photographs add great color and texture to an extremely useful work.

When The Owl Cries Review

I laughed, I cried, this book became part of me. The characters were true, the history is right and the only reason this book won't get made into a movie or mini series would be that it's too real. The vision of how Native Americans co existed and the troubling questions of slavery are secondary to the daily stuggle of subsistence living on the frontier. The highs are towering and the tragedies are heart breaking. Just like real life. Somebody do Oprah a favor and pass this winner on to her. Everyone should read this. The questions today are no less profound than they were then. My new favorite book.

A Place In Time Review

This book stars one of the last of the real cowboys, who lived on the cusp between the old West and our world of today. How could he know, as he herded cattle, broke broncos, befriended nomadic Indians and led pack trains into the Montana high country that his way of life was passing away forever? The author portrays nature and draws the panorama of Big Sky country with such skill you think you are there, discovering hidden wild berries, fording rivers of broken ice, and feeling the spring wind against your face. The finely drawn characters could only exist in this mountain-man world where the object was survival, and they wouldn't have it any other way. The twist ending reaches around and tugs your heart strings with compassion for this hero of the real Old West. Anyone who enjoys authentic stories of real "cowboys and Indians" would love this book!

Time has not dimmed my memories of our ranch on Petty Creek, and it seems necessaryto recount tales of living there. I don't know why, except that the country slides intofocus as a place out of time, and worthy of mention in a foreign world that developedaround it. So begins the introduction to A Place In Time, thestory of a man's journey from an unrestrained youth as he hunted and survived in thenatural, rugged mountain world of the Indian, to his desperate attempt to hold onto thatlife as the world changed around him. His mountain environmentwas filled with colorful characters, each of them contributors to a kaleidoscope ofintrigue, humor, and adventure, both on the ranch and in surrounding areas. A reciprocal dependence of men and animals is vividly portrayedthrough the horses who trailed the mountain world with him, some of them previously nottouched by man. Some accounts of animal companions end tragically in their vigorousexistence; all of them touch sympathies of those who harbor an appreciation of thenatural world. The story's owner is older now, but very muchalive. The account of his life and location, however, are distant in the experience ofmost in today's world. His life surpasses the boundaries of his own region, bringing thereader to confront in the end, the painful changes that have been inflicted upon hiswilderness world. A Place In Time is a vibrant account of the waymany would like it to be again, the way most never knew it was.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Ebbie Review

Meeting Mr. James E. Martin was a recent serendipitous pleasure. I overheard him at a carft show telling someone about his old pet dachshund. Being a dachshund person myself I was overjoyed at the opportunity to chat with someone about this marvelous little dog breed. During my conversation with this lively gent he mentioned his military career and how he has written about some of it in his book, "Life on the Monkey Bus". I also picked up, "Ebbie" and he told me that book was only about his life and I would probably find it boring. Well, Mr. Martin I was far from bored with your story.
Ebbie gives it to you like it is. There is no sugar coating in this story. It is about real life and it's all too often unpleasantness. There is however briefly, moments of sunshine in an otherwise life of drudgery. He is a mere tot when surrendered into foster care during the 1920s. All through his life he only wants what all children want; to be accepted and loved. Unfortuneatly for Ebbie he is unable to hold on to it for long. After two foster families and three years in a cold orphanage where the children are treated as livestock he is fostered by a farming family. Made to pull more than his share of work for his room and board, nothing else. Ebbie is never encouraged to feel like one of the family. He is drafted into the Army in 1942 and comes back to marry his childhood sweetheart.
It is a heart wrenching story. When I met Ebbie he is entering his 87th year and you'd never know he had to carry those burdens of yesteryear. He has a kind face without a hint of bitterness in his sweet smile.
Thank you Mr. Martin for sharing your story with us.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Ebbie

Ebbie is the autobiography of James E. Martin, who as an infant suffered the loss of his mother, a victim of a post-World War I influenza epidemic. For reasons never clarified, Martin's father abandoned him. The child's aunt and uncle took custody of him and planned to rear him as their own, but further family tragedy intervened which cast him upon a cruel journey of mistreatment and intrigue. A forty year saga transpired before Ebbie was able to discover his 'roots' leading him back his relatives. By telling his story of perseverance, the author does not wish himself to be perceived as a 'victim', but rather as an inspiration to many youth of today who are struggling to survive similar or worse circumstances than his own. His message to them is: Childhood is temporary. It is a time when others are in charge of your life. If your existence is dire, learn how to survive, to keep your sanity, and resolve not to allow your present conditions to wreak and sour your ultimate goal to endure and to become the kind of person which you will be proud of. It can be done. Others have done it and you can also do it.
