Duane Howard has created a wonderfully descriptive account of the mysterious mountain man of the West in the 1820s. Zack Clayton is a self-sufficient hunter, trapper, and entrepreneur able to befriend Indians, negotiate business deals within a developing economy and even manage to do a little courting along the way. Through this honest and admirable character, Howard shows us how the west was won with honor and dignity. Zack gives his handshake for a business contract that he honors even after years spent in the wilderness alone. When his best friend is killed he travels back East to deliver his partner's share of their trappings and tell his family of his demise. Through such deeds, Zack becomes known as a man who can be trusted. He also dispenses his own brand of justice to the bad guys always aiming for a punishment that will bring redemption wherever possible.
