The book would be better if the author had visited additional states and included more horse-drawn equipment as most of the examples are from the Texas, Arkansas area so equipment from New England, Upper Mid-west, Great Plains, Central Basin, California and Pacific Northwest is not identified.

The authors of "The Revolution in Horsemanship" are uniquely qualified to be our guides, and they do an excellent job. Miller and Lamb map the progression of the shift in horse training over the past 25 years, and then fit it into the context of classical training over hundreds of years.
They understand that this may be the best way ever to teach the elusive "feel" that inspires the magic of harmony and cooperation. Extensive discussion of horse behavior is presented, including how it is critical to training success.
They credit and weave together the many approaches of the popular clinicians, and recognize the most important idea, the real value of this training work, which is best explained by them:(Quoting from the book) "Perhaps this is the reason that this revolution occurred. To hand us a powerful tool for developing the rest of our humanity, the part that wasn't genetically endowed, the part that, in fact, goes against our genetically endowed, predatorial instincts. The part we have to work to obtain and is therefore most valuable to us."
I am getting this book into the hands of my students and my friends, as "doing the work" will benefit our horses and ultimately our entire community. It's a wonderfully written overview, filled with insight and intelligence.

(More customer reviews)Finally a long awaited down to earth book on the successes to be had and the pitfalls to be avoided with clicker training. The book deals in great detail with all the questions you ever wanted to ask, worrying questions such as won't feeding treats make my horse bite too more detailed questions about why we need to view working with equines differently to working with dogs. Ben talks about the importance of the trainer learning how to break down what seem like large problems into small behaviours that are much more easily dealt with and how using shaping plans will help you achieve great results to tackle any problems you may be having in your relationship with your Horse, Donkey or Mule.
The first few chapters talk about the importance of knowing the science behind the training technique .It talks to the reader about how and why a little plastic box can communicate so much to the horse. By teaching the trainer this, not only does the trainer start to understand how the horse learns, but also begins to understand how we ourselves learn. We can then apply this knowledge to all our communications with horses no matter what the problem and help us develop a more thorough understanding of our relationship with them.
Further on Ben goes into details about where people can go wrong with using the clicker and how to avoid falling into these traps by using it very clearly and with specific boundaries right from the start.
Ben comes across as clearly passionate for Horses, Donkeys and Mules but the honesty he has for imparting information without Ego, Showmanship or Self Congratulation is the biggest success of this book. Through his vast experience in working with equines, donkeys and mules and his large experience of teaching others to use clicker training and positive reinforcement he is able to show how much fun can be had as long as it is used in a responsible way with much forethought.
I would highly recommend everyone either starting out on the journey or already using clicker to read the invaluable words in this book.
My only criticism is why we had to wait so long and when is the next one ???

miniature horse foal, and it WORKS!!!!
I imprint trained him at birth and some the next day and
everything I did, helped that horse just like he said it would.
His personality is beautiful, he learned the desired responses
well and I know its because of the imprint training.It does not
take much time or effort on your part. I bought a foal that was
not imprint trained and the difference between the two horses
later on is UNBELIEVEABLE. The imprint trained horse is
friendly, obedient, and unafraid of anything ,thanks to this
book. TO me it was well worth the money I paid for it.I expect
2 more foals this year and already have my book ready to
do everything he suggests, I know it will make my life easier
when that little foal becomes a weanling thru full-grown.
For me, it was especially helpful because of my inexperience
with horses but this book would work just as well with the
experienced. It does shape the horses behaviors for LIFE.

Raise Your Hand if You Love Horses: Pat Parelli's Journey from Zero to Hero (Western Horseman Books) Review

It is possible that professional trainers are particularly, shall we say, enthusiastic, in their negative reviews, since Parelli regularly refers to them as 'predators'. The book is inspiring. The Parelli approach is logical, methodical and well organized. And, the sentiments that Parelli and his wife express are genuinely moving. Yes, the Parellis are unquestionably master merchandisers and that probably turns some off. But, you don't have to spend enormous dollars to benefit from their training methods. The book is well worth the price simply as a 'read' on horsemanship. The techniques are definitely worth trying. And, as far as I can tell (and in contrast to other reviewers' assertions), it certainly doesn't seem that Parelli is recommending that novice riders hop bareback on a horse with no reins and take off at a gallop. Rather, he offers a very standardized, step-wise progression. The book is well worth a serious read, as are Parelli's seminars. Buy the book, spend a weekend at one of their seminars and decide for yourself.
