Great sci-fi novel. The characters were intriguing and the story kept my attention. In fact, I stayed up way too late just to finish. Tell your friends... this is a must read.

Aaron Kane, a mercenary officer, crashes on Elsinore, a planet supplying the venom of the red viper to the Traders, an alien race whose arrival in 2022 caused the collapse of Earth's world economy. On Elsinore, one Trader faction holds a small band of humans in a kind of industrial slavery. Kane, under the employ of another Trader faction, is rescued by Molly Daniels and organizes a resistance to the Elsinore Traders. Ilya Aleksandrov, an officer of the same band of mercenaries, arrives to oppose Kane - thus maximizing the fees the Traders on both sides of the conflict pay to the mercenary group. Kane blames the Traders for the deaths of his wife and child. Despite opportunities to end the conflict Kane fights on, driven by his hate. Molly and Kane fall in love. Father Domingo Ramirez, a missionary to the Traders, gains access to the dark, hot, caverns in which the Traders dwell, but comes under the influence of the venom drug that permeates the air. Under the influence of the drug, he believes he is Jesus, and he converts the Traders, who crucify him, completing the story told by Ramirez. Aleksandrov learns the truth about the venom, tries the venom drug, and under its influence comes to believe that Molly has betrayed him. He captures Kane, and the Traders demand he hand Kane over. Molly achieves entry to the cavern intending to rescue Kane. Aleksandrov follows Molly to the cavern, bent on revenge for her supposed betrayal. Ramirez. hanging from the cross, tries to convince Aleksandrov to remember who he really is. This can save Kane and Molly. In the end, the question is whether or not Aleksandrov has the will to resist the drug.
