Afraid Santa will be unable to deliver Christmas toys and presents to the children of Hawaii because of the storm, Kala decides on a daring plan to save Hawaii's Christmas with the help of his father and his favorite mule, Leap. He will climb to the top of Kimo's Peak in the storm, followed by his father and Leap, then jump out and surprise Leap, who always brayed "heehaw!" loudly when Kala surprised him with a visit. many hazards are on his path, but Kala is careful in his climbing and he manages to achieve his goal, and Leap's loud response is all it takes to reroute Santa in his sleigh to the Hawaiian islands where all the children are eagerly awaiting their special holiday gifts. Santa even cheers to Kala, "Mele Kalimaka!" "Santa Claus and the Molokai Mules" is beautifully told and illustrated by no fewer than 25 two- page watercolor on canvas illustrations.
