I am not sure why I picked this book up in the first place, but I am glad that I did. Young was a medical officer serving in one of the Rhodesian Regiments serving under General Smuts in the East African Campaign in WWI. Young was a tremendous writer, and had a great eye for observing his environment irrespective of the warfare that he was mired in at the time. A great travelogue of some areas in Africa that had probably not witnessed many Europeans up to that time.
Great story of how Smuts army never could quite overtake the Germans. (Side note, the Germans in this campaign were able to evade and dodge the British right up to the armistice.) Good anecdotes on the effects of disease on both human and animals called into service.
Young's literary style was refreshing for a war memoir. I will try to find some of his other writings to see if he duplicted this wonderful effort.
