(More customer reviews)A novel of post-Civil War Texas. Here are the beginnings of the commercial Texas cattle business when unreconstructed rebels gathered wild longhorns and drove them to railheads over the Sedalia and Chisholm trails. The author, a medical doctor and rancher, is a fifth generation Texan, and I suspect there is a lot of family history here. His characters are richly-developed, some we can admire, like Aaron Turner and his cowboy compatriots, or hate, particularly Governor Davis, the corrupt leader of the Republican state government. This is a good read. A sketch map, showing the Texas locations and the Sedalia and Chisholm trails, would have been helpful. This is the first of three novels that will continue the trials and triumphs of the Turner clan. Do I smell a television mini-series?
