(More customer reviews)Five good reasons to read this small treasure (which is listed for children but will appeal more to adults with a love of southern literature and folklore): 1)The language of the rural south; 2) What happens when Mr. Fat gets paid with a can of blue paint instead of money; 2) The story about the suicidal mule and the streamliner train (carrying the Lt. Governor and a Newspaper Man); 3) A bona-fide "hambone" (Hamboning was the ancestor of rap) performed by the storyteller, Ma Minnie; (4) When Miss Marie's Mama comes to take her home from the tent show; (5) Mr. Fat's opinion of the King of England. You could buy it for a child's Christmas gift, but if you read it, you'll probably want to keep it yourself. A few 'dams' and one "ass-over-whangdoodle." Not always politically correct, but as authentic as the red clay along the banks of the Flint River.
