If Mark Twain has been reincarnated, he must have been reborn as author Bob Brown. In his charming Montana adventure, Nathan's Valley, set in 1885, Brown creates vivid, likeable, funny characters full of oh-so-human flaws. The hapless hero tries to win his sweetheart's affection by kidnapping her and hauling her off to a majestic, but nearly inaccessible, valley hidden in Montana's mountains. Their adventures, told in Brown's folksy voice, make for delightful reading reminiscent of Twain's fables. A gem.

In 1885, a terrible mistake turns a simple act of chivalry into murder, and forces two lovers to bear their children in a Montana wilderness. Nathan was not a bad man or a man of great smarts. He was big, strong, impulsive, sensitive, headstrong, and handsome. Not all attributes for Nellie Lee to love—but enough. Nellie Lee was pragmatic, religious, durable, and damn pretty. If Nathan were ever to do one smart thing, it was to fall hopelessly in love with Nellie Lee.
