Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading) Review

Intermarket Trading Strategies (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Intermarket analysis is poorly covered in current literature, with few books of historical data and boring details.
Instead in this book the Author, who has mastered the Intermarket analysis, shares discoveries on market correlations, and helps reader to develop indicators and strategies for Etf, Futures and Stocks.
This book makes easier to understand today markets, and I suggest it for intraday and both long and short term trading. It is not for fiction traders who bet on markets direction, but for people really trading their own accounts, studying a lot of technical analysis and pondering experts ideas.
The book is written in plain English, contains useful info on international markets, and a lot of MetaStock (MS) codes to help users to design (or improving their) trading systems, even you aren't the best programmer. Users of other technical software can easily develop their trading strategies, because in the Appendix there are the MS formulas and Test Specifications for all systems.
Reading this book grow up your fever to go to your pc for studying the correlations Author disclosed, and training with his trading strategies !
Minus : discussion on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms are very introductory (but these are very specific topics). Author limited his Intermarket analysis to major markets, and not all exchange products are covered.
Plus : the best book on the subject I ever red : the Intermarket concepts behind trading ideas are well explained. Trading strategies are deeply tested. Author insights help to really make money in today markets. Good value for price : many systems described would cost hundred dollars to buy !

Mastering Trade Selection and Management: Advanced Strategies for Long-Term Profitability

When I started reading this book, it wasn't long before I started to formulate an opinion, and I was thinking this couldn't possible more than a three star book. It was highly technical even when addressing very general subject, and the tone seemed a bit condescending. It didn't help that the authors kept flogging their earlier book, Mastering the Currency Market: Forex Strategies for High and Low Volatility Markets. As I neared the halfway point, I began thinking that I would have to give the authors four stars, because everything they were saying was making sense. Sure, it was still very technical, and it was definitely becoming more and more geared for a specialized, limited type of short-term trader, but the charts (candlesticks) made sense and accurately illustrated the authors' points, and the strategies continued to be sensible and feasible. As I neared the end of the book, despite reading for the umpteenth time that such-and-such was a topic covered in their other book, I found myself thinking that the information conveyed in this book is valuable, useful, practical, and reasonable, and anyone who is serious about making money in some kind of financial market would probably be able to use some of what this book contains. The fact that they close out the book with concrete trading plans (not strategies or analysis) tailored to different markets and traders and built on their earlier chapters of analysis, trend spotting, and trade timing, finally convinced me that this is a five star book. True, had I not received a complimentary copy from the publisher, this is probably not a book that I would have read, but I have to say, even though I've no intention of becoming a short-term trader or delving into forex and commodities markets, I learned a lot reading this book and it gave me plenty of ideas which I think will work for long-term stock trading. Who knows? I may even pick up Norris and Gaskill's first book.

The best thing I can say about this book is it is complete. Changed my trading forever - instead of reacting to what the market does, the book shows you how to lay-out a gameplan for the day (with options for each fork in the road). I spent a few days just watching it unfold and what I could see happening based on the pivot/money zone analysis and I felt like nostradamous.
The ONLY critique I have is when he says that a pivot range should be "unusually" wide or narrow he never defines "unusual". Is that 10% wider than average? 200%?

Simple Steps to Trading Discipline: Increasing Profits with Habits You Already Have Review

Simple Steps to Trading Discipline: Increasing Profits with Habits You Already Have
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great trading book that covers two important aspects of trading: discipline and keeping a trading journal. Author Toni Hansen shows the reader how to correctly track each trade by logging it as soon as possible after it happens to capture the thoughts and emotions linked to that trade. She also shows how to analyze the type of trade it was, the time of day it took place, and the method you used, by doing this you can more clearly see your strengths and weaknesses in different types of trades. You will use the information you gather to correct your losing trades by adjusting areas that you see are causing losses, it could be to big of position sizing in a certain trade, you may have entered the trade to late, or traded a security that does not fit your personality. By keeping an accurate trading journal this book shows how you can track, analyze, correct, and learn to be a better trader and profit from this education.
While the keeping of a trading journal is the main theme of the book it also offers great advice for good trading. You must focus your trades on markets and securities you know well. You must have a focused trading plan and master the art of reading price action in the markets. New traders must narrow down this field and discover the areas of the market for which they have the most natural aptitude. When trading, the ability to think and act swiftly without hesitation is a major key to your success. You will learn why the five building blocks to price development are pace, support and resistance, trend development, volume, and correction periods and how to read and profit from them. The book offers great advice for beginners like: "An important concept for any trader to learn early on, however, is that cash itself is a position." And "A trading system is only as good as your ability to implement it." You will also see how the impact of your emotions will have a huge impact upon your success or failure in trading. This book will be a five star for beginning traders that are just getting started on building a trading system and learning how to learn from their mistakes. Veteran traders will learn little but may need a refreshment course on discipline if they have gotten off track. Also check out Alexander Elder's trading books for a more in depth understanding of the psychology and discipline needed to be a successful trader.

Rule the Freakin' Markets: How to Profit in Any Market, Bull or Bear Review

Rule the Freakin' Markets: How to Profit in Any Market, Bull or Bear
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author's claim he turned $33,000 into 7 million in 15 months is extraordinarily unlikely, and extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. However, you will not find any trade confirmations or affidavits from accountants in his book. In fact, he does not even detail one single trade he has ever made. One might wonder why someone who is supposedly so proficient at trading needs to write books, run a trading website, hawk videos, infomercials, etc. His book also contains numerous errors that make me wonder if he has ever traded at all. For example, he doesn't appear to understand the details of the new SEC day-trading rules, particularly the increased margin available under these rules to intraday traders. He states that Datek (now merged with Ameritrade) is not a direct-access broker (false). In fact, Datek at one time owned a chunk of the Island ECN, the ECN used almost exclusively by all sophisticated traders.
If the author did manage to achieve the gains he claims, it would have been during the very end of the biggest bull market in history, a speculative bubble that will probably never repeat itself in our lifetimes. Many of the "trends" which are the basis of his trading strategy no longer exist. For example, IPO and stock-split plays. In this current market, how many IPOs or stock splits have you heard of recently? Although the book discusses many solid trading rules such as always using stops on every trade, these rules can be found in a thousand other books on trading.
The most important part of trading, the mental and psychological barriers that need to be overcome in order to be successful are really not discussed at all, or are simply assumed. Ultimately, the book is irresponsible because it does not ever disclose how difficult it is to succeed at trading. For example, Massachusetts regulators seized the records of one day-trading firm in the late '90s. They found that the firm had 68 traders, and 67 of them were losing money. This works out to be close to the typical failure rate of 97% for individuals who attempt to trade for a living. Do I think the author is one of the 3% who made it? Nope. It's much easier to write books on how to trade than to actually do it.

Finding #1 Stocks: Screening, Backtesting and Time-Proven Strategies (The Zacks Series)
Average Reviews:

If you want stock screening ideas, you'll love this book. Kevin includes a large number of screens that are designed to find momentum stocks, growth stocks, value stocks, and dividend stocks. Whatever your preference is, chances are there is a screening idea for you in this book.
Kevin Matras is a screening expert, who backtests every strategy he writes to make sure it works. Rather than just look for random anomalies, he stops to consider whether the combination of criteria makes sense. I know this to be true because I worked with Kevin for several years.
Most of the strategies are based on the Zacks Rank. While the screens are optimized for Zacks' Research Wizard stock screening program, they can be adopted to other stock screening programs, such as AAII's Stock Investor Pro. The key is to look for rising earnings estimates and positive earnings surprises. You won't get the exactly the same results, but you'll still be able to capture the spirit for many of the screens in this book.

Day Trading With Short Term Price Patterns and Opening Range Breakout Review

Day Trading With Short Term Price Patterns and Opening Range Breakout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This author is one of the few that have touched upon one of the most fundamental and universal properties of almost any market. Whether your games is futures or equities, look at any chart and you will see periods of little price activity alternating with periods of greater price movement. This is the crux of this book. Markets invariably move from stages of expansion, to contraction, and back to expansion, etc. Several other price patterns and technical analysis approaches are tested as well. However, after reading this book, you will no longer be one of those who try to "get in" on a runaway bull or bear market - only to have it turn right around on you as if it knew you were coming, but rather, you will be one of the ones who are ready when an otherwise "dead" market takes everyone else by surprise.

I was really looking forward to this book coming out. I preordered it and even got a bit elated when Amazon said it was going to show up 2 days before the original ship date.
The book was a very easy read, I think I was finished it in an evening or so. I liked how the book gave a nice back story to each of the traders it showcased. The problem I had was the biography was as long or longer the trade setups. The only real actionable trade setups were from @superbee and @upsidetrader. The rest were less than actionable. If your looking for a book to help you learn a trading style. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you looking for something fun to read and want to lean bits and pieces of other trading styles well then buy a used copy.
Being a professional trader for over 10 years, I found every little "Edge" in owning this book.

Average Reviews:

Interesting book to read. Being from former soviet union myself, I read fantiki part with some nostalgic memories. There is nothing original about what Gennady wrote - all is on the net, what is interesting is that he combined some of the major financials cliche in one book, which is not big, and dispelled them very cleverly. The book was fun to read, and thanks to NYC Subway delays :), I read it in few trips.
I day trade futures, and lost all financial naivete a long time ago, but majority still holds it. The current financial crisis might (just might not will) change things around. Books like this one need to be promoted because an average person can read it, enjoy it and what is most important understand its concepts, and as a result make better financial decisions. The publisher and author should do a better job in promoting it. I accidentally saw the preview in Futures magazine and thus bought it.
The only thing I wish Gennady went into is his experience in algo trading, but that would make the book very interesting for someone like me, and boring for many others.

12 Habitudes of Highly Successful Traders Review

12 Habitudes of Highly Successful Traders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book clearly explains 12 habits you must develop to be a successful trader. These habits are developed through having the right attitude toward trading.
Preparedness-You must be prepared to trade, do not take trades with out the right thought put into the trade and methods applied to them.
Abundance consciousness-You must believe that there is plenty of money to be made in the markets, and you deserve to have your share.
Risk Taking-You have to take the right amount of risk for your profit goals but not put yourself in a situation of blowing up your account.
Thinking in Probabilities-You must trade in a way that gives you an edge in the markets. The odds should be in your favor.
Discipline-You must follow your own methods and strategies that give you that edge. Always follow proper psychology, risk management, and method.
Courage- You must have the ability to pull the trigger and make the trade. You can't paper trade and back test systems forever.
Accept Loss-This is the most important habitude, you must decide what price will let you know you are wrong and sell to stop your losses when that price is hit. Not doing this can lead to the destruction of your account.
Comfortable with Uncertainty-You must understand that anything can happen at any time in the markets, and accept that.
Optimism-You must have a positive attitude when trading.
Open-Mindedness-You must be open to all possibilities, and be able to change styles and systems when markets change.
Long Term View-You have to understand that each trade is only one among hundreds
and that in the long term your systems and methods will be successful and you will profit even after draw downs in equity.
Detachment-You must keep your self worth and ego separated from your trading. You are not your trades. You will trade better if your life is balanced.
The book does a great job of explaining why each of these habits are essential to success and how they tie together in the way a trader must think. You can learn these principles the hard way through losing money and time trading with the wrong mindset or you can just read this book, believe the author and follow her good advice. This book is short and to the point, it does not waste a page or a sentence, I believe the price paid will be worth it to beginning traders or those that need to work on their trading psychology. The book is small but the principles it teaches are huge.

Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader: Lessons from 21 Weeks of Real Trading Review

Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader: Lessons from 21 Weeks of Real Trading
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Full disclosure: This is not an unbiased perspective, as the reviewer has developed a warm friendship with the author (Peter Brandt).
With that said, hopefully you can overlook the bias for two reasons:
* Having read literally hundreds of trading books over the years - most of them mediocre, a small handful worth revisiting - your reviewer knows excellence when he sees it. By any standard, this book stands out.
* The author, Peter Brandt, has the ultimate in trader bona fides: An audited track record, spanning 30 years, of better than 41% compound returns! (No, that is not a typo.)
So with that out of the way, let's begin...
There is an old saying among professional racetrack handicappers: The losing player is the one who tells you he breaks even; the breakeven player is the one who tells you he is a consistent winner; and the winning player is the one who tells you it's a tough, tough game, with great dedication required for success.
Peter Brandt, a lifetime winner in the great game of trading, falls in the third category. While clearly someone who loves the game, he does not shy away from the hard realities of trading.
In describing his method of trading, Brandt comes across as refreshingly humble, underscoring that his approach is far from the only approach, cheerfully adding that other methodologies may be superior. (Though of course the vast majority of money managers would give a kidney, or maybe even a lung, for compound returns like his.)
From a position of humility, sincerity and strength, Brandt successfully explodes the following myths:
* The myth that inside information, hidden keys, or some other form of "secret knowledge" is what matters.
* The myth that percentage of winning trades is a meaningful measure of long-run trading success. (In fact the opposite may be true - an unhealthy focus on winning percentage can NEGATIVELY impact one's chances of success.)
* The myth that winning traders never experience setbacks, periods of trading frustration, or emotional challenges as "mere mortals" do.
Next to honesty, what shines forth from "Diary" is a stunning sense of clarity: Clarity of purpose, clarity of execution and methodology, and clarity of operational procedures from start to finish.
It is a beautiful thing to approach markets with a quiet confidence. Not every day will be a winning day, but every day can be infused with a sense of deep calmness, in respect to having a good plan and executing on that plan.
As a thirty-year veteran trader who understands the vital importance of comprehensive planning, Brandt exudes this desirable sense of calmness and, through the explanation of his methodology, teaches others how to cultivate it.
Just consider how many traders (perhaps you at one time?) have gotten lost in a fog of anxiety, or otherwise lost on the murky unmarked byways of an endless holy grail quest. Method after method, indicator after indicator... or consider how many traders agonize over the decision making process, never 100% clear what a "signal" is or whether the present signal is worth taking.
If you have uncomfortable familiarity with any of the above issues, this book could be a drink of cool water in the parched desert (or perhaps a bucket of refreshing ice water splashed in one's face). With sufficient methodological development and consistent planning, there is no need for ambiguity. As Brandt shows, a skilled trader can develop sufficient insight, conviction and rule-based engagement tools to know EXACTLY what a signal is, and exactly how to act on it.
And finally, last but not least, Brandt's book is a wonderful, powerful testament to price.
In earning his stellar compound returns over the course of three decades, Peter Brandt more or less did it via "price and price alone." The charts presented are beautifully unadorned, as is Brandt's methodology in general. There are no esoteric tea-leaf concoctions here - the regular hodge-podge of indicators that clutter up most charts are completely absent (and not at all missed). Hawkers of complicated bells and whistles should fear this book!
Brandt also does a service to traders in drawing attention back to classical chart patterns, in the context of the extended time frames required for full development of those patterns. Whereas "too fine an eye for pattern will find it anywhere," as the old saying goes, Brandt is very selective in the patterns he acts upon, preferring development time of weeks to months for the generation of true "best dressed" or "best in class" trades.
In conclusion: No matter your present depth of trading experience, this book could open your eyes. (If you can already "see," they may be opened a little wider.)
Anyone who seeks a path out of the dead-end labyrinth of esoteric guru methods, impossibly precise "can't lose" systems and convoluted trading predictions should read this book - as should those successful traders who already know and walk the path, yet simply seek to elevate their game.
