(More customer reviews)Living in Oregon and loving it, I was finally able to connect with the true spirit and life of early Oregon. Jane Kirkpatrick brings this story to the very core of my soul. I actually felt like I was there in the Deschutes with Jane Shearer and the Warm Spring tribe she shared her life with and to the amazing feats that her husband,Joesph,set in the early west. The stama of the early pioneers to have trials, tribulations and yet strong faith to make the West the best of living. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. It definetley was not a slow read for me. This part of Oregon is on my list to visit, though, it won't look the same, I'm sure that I will feel the spirit of all the characters gathered in that valley. After reading this book, I could not stop. Next came All Together In One Place, and A Gathering of Finches. I am just now starting Love to Water My Soul..I hope that Jane Kirkpatrick keeps the "sweetness" of her writing coming and coming..I love historical fiction of this kind.

(More customer reviews)This book was every bit as delightful as At Home in Mitford, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. Jan Karon has created the perfect small town in which we would all like to live, and it is a joy to visit there, even if only for a little while. Esther Cunningham, the mayor of Mitford, says that Mitford always takes care of its own, and I think that is what we all love about the place. It's a place where the community love God and love their neighbors, with all their faults and eccentricities. It is also wonderful to read a about romance between mature adults Father Tim and Cynthia. I applauded Karon's way of communicating Christian values without hitting us over the head with them. I always leave Mitford a little more aware and a little more kindly disposed toward my own neighbors. If only we could create such a community in the real world.

(More customer reviews)There is just something special about Mitford, North Carolina. Jan Karon has created a magical yet ordinary place, with memorable, endearing characters. I love these novels and enjoy each and every trip I take back.
In the 3rd installment, things are looking up! Father Timothy and Cynthia are settling into married life, and the marvels at having a soul mate after Tim's 60-plus years of bachelorhood has yet to stop amazing him. Their first year will definitely be an adventurous one -- a camping trip gone awry; a 90th birthday party for Timothy's favorite parishioner, Sadie Baxter; the opening of the new nursing home, Hope House; as well as a few newcomers to the Mitford community. And of course all of our favorite characters, like Dooley, Mule and Fancy Skinner, and J.C. Hogan, and places, like The Grill, The Porter Place, and Fernback are back in full swing. Reading these books feel like the best a family reunion has to offer.
A helpful hint for those who are reading the books in order: Book 6 actually fits in between book 2 and 3 -- it is a detailed story of Timothy and Cynthia's wedding. I read it before reading These High, Green Hills. I suggest doing this if you are the type of reader that likes things in chronological order.
I can't wait to continue on with the series. There is a certain beauty about these books, a calming, soothing beauty that makes me want to pack up and move to Mitford! Although not novels of huge, twisting, turning action, Jan Karon manages to turn the ordinary things of life into great milestones. I applaud her and the rewards I receive every time I visit.

(More customer reviews)I loved this book. Linda Chaikin is one of my favourite authors. She takes you to the Old West 1859 to Nevada where Virginia City is booming with silver. Annalee Halliday's father had struck it rich there! Annalee couldn't wait to tell her mother the good news. As the Hallidays travel from California to join him, they became trapped in a fierce winter fighting for survival. Marshal Brett Wilder is also searching for Jack Halliday...but not for the same reason. He is commissioned by the governor to arrest Jack Halliday for a murderer of a card dealer and for crippling Brett's father's arm who was a great surgeon. He rescues Annalee and her family from death. Annalee fights her attraction for the handsome lawman and her illness. She tries to deny the fact that she is not strong but her Lord could use her to have an impact on other people's lives. A great and wonderfull story about a young woman and her feelings of worthlessness and heartbreak and a handsome Brett Wilder who struggles with showing justice and mercy to the people who ruined his and his father's lives. I have news for everyone who likes this book. There is a sequel and it's called "Desert Star" and is due to be published in January!

(More customer reviews)I really need to thank my friend who got me Terri Fivash's first book Joseph. It was a masterpiece that I found myself reading several times. Then I read Ruth and Boaz and I was sure then that I had a new favourite author. The ending of Ruth and Boaz left me anxiously awaiting - for almost a year - the availability of Dahveed. I honestly thought she had outdone herself on the first two books and wondered whether Dahveed would be up to par. That was until I actually read Dahveed. What an amazing book! Never has an author's skill of story telling impressed me more. Not only is she a master story teller, but she is able to stay strictly in line with the biblical account of the story she is telling. Her background in history allows her to pay incredible attention to detail while she weaves an intricate cast of characters into the story and draws the reader into another time and place. I literally could not put these books down until I had finished them - especially Dahveed. This book takes an intimate look at the early life of one of the most amazing men who ever lived - Israel's beloved Dahveed - and allows the reader to share in his joys, sorrows, trials and triumphs. It takes the reader on a journey that encompasses the circumstances of his birth, spans his childhood and ends with him on the threshold of manhood poised to become God's Warrior. Reading her novels has opened up a whole new perspective on these well-loved bible stories for me. I now understand these characters and their stories more deeply than I used to. What a blessing. I would recommend Terri Fivash's books to anyone as it appears she cannot disappoint. My only protest is that the release date for the second volume in the Dahveed saga has not been announced. I anxiously await!

Patience (Brides of the West #6) Review

I am sure the rest of the story would have been great, but I could not get through the beginning for the story began to just tell a different past than what happened before. Such as Dylan was the one to bring the girls from Missouri when actually in Glory it was Jackson. Again it mixed Glory story with Ruth when Patience refer to Ruth shooting an elk and covering her and Dylan with it. It is as if neither Glory's or Ruth's story was told. They blended the two. After that I just was not into the book. The book lost it's appeal. I returned it to store for my money back I may read it sometime in the future but not right now.

Santa Fe Woman (Wagon Wheel Series #1) Review

But then due to an economic depression, her father loses all his money forcing the family to have to move out west. To find their way on the Santa Fe Trail, the family must have a guide. Jori finds one in ChadRocklin, a prisoner she bails out of jail. The two clash over everything but the Haydens must listen to him if they want to survive in the harsh conditions of the road West.
As much as I enjoyed this book, why do I feel deja vu when reading it? Is it because I've read this plot in several of Gilbert Morris's other books? I guess after over 200 books things start to blend together. I am 100% certain there have been characters named either Praise God or Revelation that go around asking people if they are believers in Jesus in other Morris books. And I know that the story about the guy who can't read, the woman teaches him, they end up getting married was used in book 6 of the House of Winslow series. I guess to a new reader of Morris this is not a big deal. I did enjoy this book very much, as I have his others. Once again there is a lot of historical fact researched for the story. I do enjoy learning while reading and since I enjoy American history, Morris' books are usually spot on about facts. I like mixing real events and people with fictional characters to show what could have happened, and it also gives a new way to look at history. I just felt the characters in this book were rather one dimensional and predictable. If you want a historical western story, this is a good book. However I would recommend Morris' CheneyDuvall series or the Appomattox Saga if you haven't read any of his books before.

After reading Home in Mitford, I went to check out A Light in the Window, the second of the series, and found the book missing from the local library. I found out my neighbor had it and begged her to please let me have it while she finished another book she was reading. You can do this in a small town. The Mitford years are the most heartfelt and relaxing books I have ever read. Jan has a way of speaking to your heart and making you feel very much a part of Mitford. Jan please don't stop here, your books are absolutely the best ever. These books have renewed my faith in God and made me value my friends even more.

Perhaps it's enough to say that I read this book in its entirety on a rainy Sunday afternoon in front of a warm crackling fire with a nice cup of coffee. Those who have read her books know that Brunstetter's writing is like comfort food for the soul and Sarah's Choice was no exception.

Cowboy For Keeps (Men of Mule Hollow) Review

(More customer reviews)This was not a very interesting story at all. Very predictable and repetitive. The characters lacked depth. What I didn't understand was the emphasis on the female lead's running (long distance) in a cowboy culture book. Although the title includes 'cowboy' very little 'cowboy culture' was included. Only a mere mention that the lead male rode horses. Nothing about ranching, rodeos, or even Cowboy Church (there is an attempt at being spiritual/ christian in the book.) The fact that the action and plot takes place in Texas doesn't make it 'cowboy' at all. Mentions of 'God's got a plan' doesn't make it thoughtful or spiritual. The author needed a second draft and a better editor - perhaps one that read the book. Kristine Mika

Small-Town Brides: A Dry Creek Wedding\A Mule Hollow Match (Love Inspired) Review

(More customer reviews)First, I would like to say I have read all the Dry Creek AND all the Mule Hollow Series and I have ABSOLUTELY loved them. I was looking so very forward to reading this book with this joint venture ... but in my opinion I felt they both fell a bit short. I enjoyed Debra Clopton's Mule Hollow novella better however, I never could get attached to Rene in the Dry Creek novella. It starts out with these two cousin's that have a dream of marrying and living next door to each other... Rene has fallen in love with Trace (who ends up being the love interest in the Mule Hollow novella) to find out he just wants a mother for his ophaned niece that he just has gotten custody of and doesn't quite know what to do with. For some reason I never can get emotionally tied to Rene, I actually like Clay better but still never can get quite into this book try as hard as I can. Even though we meet back up with Glory and her husband it just doesn't to me have the emotional connection the other books have had. I realize the other review gave it a glowing review and I wish I could have as well, I ABSOLUTELY have LOVED this series .but to me it missed!
Now, on to the Dry Creek novella .... Trace (the scum in the first novella) is the main character in this book which made it a bit of a stretch for me to like him to begin with in this book as we were told what a jerk he was over and over, but you can't help end up feeling so very sorry for the poor guy. And, in my opinion, I connect much easier with him than with Rene in the first one. Now, here we go again ... I had more trouble connecting with Paisley than I did with Trace, as they were falling in love ... I don't know what was the matter with me while I was reading these novellas .... I adore these series!!!!! I have read every single book in these series and LOVED most of them and enjoyed them all ... but maybe due to the length of them the depth was just not there for me ... I do not know!!! I DO KNOW THAT my heart broke for Zoey, the little orphaned niece ...and my heart went out for ALL that Trace was trying to do for her and felt how frightened he was that he could not or might not get it right. Now, in my opinion this is what made this novella so much better ... again, even though we revisited a number of the previous characters throughout this it just was not the same. I have read many other novellas and have not felt this way in the past... just felt these were a bit rushed ... probably me, but I can't help the way I feel ... it will NOT stop me from reading future books in either of these series as I have grown to love many of the characters in these towns.

Sheri Marsh is perfectly happy being a confirmed bachelorette and has no plans to give up her single status. Besides, as many divorces as her parents have between them, if anyone knows why getting married is a bad idea, it's Sheri. But the matchmaking posse of Mule Hollow have set their sights on Sheri and are determined to find her a suitable husband, whether Sheri wants it or not.
Sheri decides the only way to get the women to leave her alone is to trick them into thinking she's already got a boyfriend. Pace Gentry, new man in town seems like the perfect candidate for her scheme. Only a couple problems... he's a new Christian who is dead set against the deception Sheri wants to play and he just happens to find Sheri to be the most insufferable woman he's ever met!
God works in mysterious ways and soon Sheri and Pace will have to accept that He has a plan for them and it includes their being together.
Meeting Her Match was my first introduction to the writing of Debra Clopton and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I found my way into this series somewhere in the middle but that did not affect my enjoyment of the story. While some of the other characters obviously had their stories told in preceding books in the series, enough back story was given about them that I felt like I got to know them just enough for their occurrences in this book.
I thought Sheri was a little too stubborn for her own good, but then considering her family history it's only natural she's afraid of marriage after what her parents put her through. I never quite grasped the logic behind her scheme to get back at the matchmakers in town since it seemed to me her plans would have the opposite results from what she intended.
Sheri also struggled with her faith in God as a result of her past. She believed god didn't care about her or He'd answer her prayers. She had a sadly skewed opinion that God only cares about the devout Christians. Pace is a "baby" Christian and his new faith in God really makes a difference in his life. I think the newness of Pace's acceptance of God makes quite an impact on Sheri and if not for pace, Sheri may not have come around when she did. I cheered wholeheartedly when Sheri finally comes to understand God and renews her faith, which allows her to accept Pace into her life fully.

Lone Star Cinderella (Mule Hollow Matchmakers, Book 11) Review

(More customer reviews)As always, Debra Clopton's Mule Hollow story immediately grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go until the very last page. The only thing I could ever say negative about one of her books is that it takes me away from life's responsibilities. Truly, once I start I can't put it down. When I do, for does call, I can't help but wish I were reading it instead of what I was doing. There that good. She always leaves you in a state of wanting to know what happens next.
Seth is a man everyone can fall in love with. Strong, caring, protective, and God fearing. I loved Melody's story and how her character evolved. Debra did an amazing job bringing two total opposites together. Melody's relationship with her brother was one true to life that any person that has dealt with a loved ones addiction can relate to and appreciate.
I have no idea if Debra intends to stop writing the Mule Hollow series in the near future, but I for one certainly hope that she doesn't. She's done an amazing job of keeping it going with fresh characters, and new situation. Though I often think back to the other stories with a warm feeling, I'm glad that she doesn't repetitively go over the past characters history. I may one day go back and read some of them, but for now I'm content with each new story.

Debra writes a good storyline, but frankly this story has been done to death. The best thing she has going however is the secondary characters. This is a continuation of her Mule Hollow series and the supporting cast are all back with helpful advise. One of the things l liked best about this story is that even with the theme of the story being about matchmakers, the group of ladies that make up the matchmaking team decided that they shouldn't do anything because they were asked not to. Zane and Rose made a nice pair, as well, even though they had a lot issues between them to work out. I really like the author's writing style and the town setting and the added characters gives new life to a well used subject matter.
