The Trader Joe's Companion: A Portable Cookbook Review

I have used Cooking with All Things Trader Joe's for going on two years now - hands down it's my favorite cookbook and I use it several times a week. Most of my go-to dishes are from that cookbook. I was thrilled when I read an article about this new one coming out and snatched it up. I really liked the idea of a "portable" cookbook for taking to the store with you - just stick it in your purse and consult it as you go through the store picking up ingredients. I can't tell you how many times I would stop by TJ's on the way home from work and wished I had some recipes with me rather than randomly picking up products. The size is kind of like those wine guides - tall and narrow - so it definitely is compact and very cute. The recipes are more of the same quick and easy type as before, with all kinds of cuisines. I had discovered the Simply Quiche recipe on their TJ blog actually, and it's here in this book - it's one of those recipes that is fantastic and gets even better as you try your own variations. Lots of great salads too. The Coffee Chocolate Fudge is a-mazing and addictive. Keep 'em coming!

Cooking with All Things Trader Joe's Review

Overall, this is an excellent cookbook. I've had this cookbook for about one month, and so far I love it.
First off, let me say that this book is targeted to cooks who enjoy creating "gourmet" type meals. This book isn't for you if you're looking for dishes that might show up in a cafeteria. Even though there are recipes for common things like sandwiches and casseroles, they have their own gourmet twist. So for those people who like to serve creative dishes, this cookbook is made for them.
The theory behind the book is that Trader Joe's sells many unique sauces, pre-chopped veggies, and other "half-prepped" ingredients that would normally take a cook a significant amount of time to prepare on their own. So combining the "half-prepped" ingredients of Trader Joe's and the recipes in the cookbook, you can whip up gourmet meals in a fraction of the time it would take you otherwise.
All the recipes have a large color picture, a list of ingredients (sometimes with substitutes), clear instructions, and the estimated prep time (usually in the 20-30min range). I've tried a few of the quick recipes and they have been pretty straightforward so far. The cookbook includes appetizers, entres, desserts, and a "bachelor quickies" section at the end which is basically heating pre-cooked/frozen stuff from Trader Joe's and combining them into interesting meals.
Most of the dishes are very original and look/sound delicious. There were a few recipes that I had question marks about, but I guess I'll find out how good they are once I try them.
So overall, if you like the idea of cooking original "gourmet-like" meals in a fraction of the time, and you have access to a Trader Joe's, this book is very highly recommended. Happy cooking!

The Cooking With Trader Joe's Cookbook: Dinner's Done Review

I own several of the Trader Joe's cookbooks and I'm excited to see this cookbook because 1) It has nutritional information - calories, fat, sodium, etc. Finally! I don't necessarily count the numbers every day but I really like having the information available as an FYI. I've been eating healthier these past few years and much is due to Trader Joe's and the ability to cook more regularly at home 2) This cookbook has all the things I loved about its predecessor "Cooking with all Things Trader Joe's" - the main one being the photos facing every single recipe. I don't want to buy cookbooks anymore unless they have photography and this one is packed from beginning to end with gorgeous, inspiring photos. The recipes have been fantastic so far - easy, simple but impressive, with lots of appeal all around. The TJ cookbook recipes are the only ones in my house that are requested over and over, and I'm happy to oblige.
