It is almost as if you are sitting around a kitchen table listening to someone's favorite life stories when you read this book. Suggs's The Moonshiner and Other Stories, which is set in the South during the Great Depression, allows those of us who never lived in this time, a glimpse of life we will never fully comprehend. In these literary sketches, the time seems to pass more slowly and relationships are more valued. Each story is a jewel, with themes such as death, prayer, work, honesty, superstition, and religion. I wished for a different ending to some of the stories because I wanted the tale to continue. I wanted to know more about the lives of Wally and Marie, George and Melissa Butler, and Zack. This book sometimes leaves you sad, sometimes chuckling, but always with a sense that a good story is worth telling. Well done!
