The Prospector's Voyage Review

The Prospector's Voyage

This is a good, old-fashioned yarn which has a little bit of everything: high adventure, star-crossed lovers, an unexpected friendship, dastardly villains and enough suspense near the end to tie a tight knot in one's stomach. With his knowledge of wilderness survival skills, author Jim Ballou has fashioned an engrossing and entertaining story about a young prospector's journey from unexpected defeat and despair to his discovery of what really matters in life.

Prunes and Rupe Review

Prunes and Rupe

Based on true events and a stone monument erected in memory of the original Prunes in 1933, Prunes and Rupe is a children's picturebook about the bond between prospector Rupert M. Sherwood and his faithful burro, Prunes. They were a team for nearly forty-one years until their bodies became so worn and tired they couldn't work anymore. Rupe had to go to the lowlands on doctor's orders, and Prunes was faithfully tended to by Rupe's former neighbors. But when a terribly bitter snowstorm came, it would be the beginning of the end for the old donkey, and when Rupe's master's time came, his last wish was to be buried with Prunes. The detailed, folksy artwork complements this warmhearted tale of loyalty and fast friendship.

I read the book The Perilous Road by William O. Steele. If you like exciting books you should read this one. I really don't like to read but this book I really enjoyed reading. The story takes place during the Civil War. Chris Brabson hates the union troops for many reasons. He tries ro get them back for stealing their food through a variety of ways.

Buried Treasures of California Review

Buried Treasures of California

I started reading this book and could not put it down. Perhaps for me this book was something very special that it may not be to all. I travel the hills of California on a regular basis, in search of treasure, or just the opportunity to pretend that I am that forty-niner in 1877 digging around in a cold, dark, creaking mine. There is something incredibly relaxing about stepping back in time and exploring a miner's stomping ground. Well if lost treasure intrigues you, and you love short stories, than buy this book. You will not be unhappy!

This volume, the seventh in W.C. Jameson's buried treasures series, contains thirty such tales of forgotten riches. It was these tales and others like them that drove westware expansion, and though many of the legendary California treasures have been unearthed, many still remain.

The Ballad of Lucy Whipple Review

The Ballad of Lucy Whipple

When I was nearly finished with LUCY WHIPPLE my teacher told me that I might be assighned to that book for a book report. But that would have been fine with me, because I enjoyed it so much that I would've been glad to read it again.
LUCY WHIPPLE is set in the mid 1800's, the time of The California Gold Rush. It is about a girl whos mother decides to move from Massachusets to California to search for gold. Unfortunately, Lucy hates the town (Lucky Diggins) they move to, and wants to move back to Massachusets.
This book was funny, original, yet it had some features that every book must have. LUCY WHIPPLE had some sad parts that made me cry. But all books must have something sad. Some authors don't write the sad parts very well, but Cushman did a fabulus job. The ending suprised me, and I'm glad Cushman chose to end it like that. LUCY WHIPPLE is definately on my list of "Books That Everyone Must Read".
