Digging for Gold is about a young man named Frank Allfrey who lives in England with his miserly uncle. His uncle, who does not approve of Frank's chosen profession of painter/naturalist, sends him to be a clerk in California. The business in California fails, and Frank must make his fortune by gold-panning. He is joined by Joe Graddy, a kind old sailor who had also worked at the firm. They have many adventures on the way, make several friends and eventually Frank gets his fortune, though from an unexpected quarter.
Ballantyne is a wonderful author who writes from a Christian standpoint, and makes a point of creating his characters with good morals and values. He occasionally deals with difficult subjects. For example in this book, he writes briefly about the way justice was typically meted out at that time in California (murder, lynching). But on the other hand, at the end of the book, Frank decides to use most of his fortune helping others and even his uncle decides to loosen his purse.
This is a short book, my copy being only 124 pages. The purpose of these shorter books, and others in the series, was to educate people who could not afford longer more expensive books. Ballantyne was always careful to make sure the facts in his books were correct, though the characters were fictional. He often went to the places he wrote about, and sometime the adventures his characters encounter happened to himself or someone he knew. All of Ballantyne's books are good, I'm just sorry he is not better known.
