This book describes the missionary work of one Miss Patsy, a woman I have heard of all my life, in the community of Canoe in Breathitt Co., KY. There is a good selection of pictures also. I had not expected to find a copy so easily. Thanks Amazon.

Patty Stratten, a wealthy, very religious, highly educated, Boston spinster, decides to give up her comfortable life for the rigors of teaching at an orphanage and school in an isolated area of Eastern Kentucky, a place that is completely devoid of modern conveniences. She falls in love with an uneducated, uncultured, mountaineer, that is a firm believer in the commandment, Thou shalt do no murder, and is eleven years her junior. When World War I is declared, he feels that he should help his country and volunteers for service but refuses to accept a rifle. He is assigned as an aide to the medics that are caring for the wounded. While crawling toward an enemy foxhole to rescue a fellow soldier, he is seriously wounded and is discharged as being physically unable to continue service. He returns home, marries Patty, but is shunned by his former friends and neighbors for his refusal to participate in the killing.

Mogreb-el-Acksa; A Journey in Morocco Review

Mogreb-el-Acksa; A Journey in Morocco

Cunninghame Graham is a superb observer and writer. In Mogreb-el-Acksa, published in 1898, Graham describes his attempt to cross the Atlas Mountains and reach the forbidden city of Tarudant. However, he was detained in the mountains for four months by the Kaid of Kintafi, and ultimately turned back to Marakesh. The places he visits and the people he meets come alive, and a current of humor bubbles throughout the narrative. His observations on western vs. eastern cultures, in many instances unfavorable to both but usually funny and profound, apparently made the book unpopular when it was published. I recommended the book to two friends, one a world traveller, the other a Moroccan. Both loved it.

Rest in the Lord: A Woman's Guide to Connecting with God's Vision for you in Challenging Times Review

Rest in the Lord: A Woman's Guide to Connecting with God's Vision for you in Challenging Times

April 2007
Reviewer: Award Winning Author, Judy Azar LeBlanc
Rest in the Lord is a very unique and practical Christian book that shows the reader how to overcome challenging circumstances that life brings, and how those circumstances can lead you to having a closer relationship with God.
The uniqueness of the book is the way that Author, Liz Shaw not only generously shares with the reader some very real and difficult personal circumstances that have occurred in her life, how she overcame them and how she was healed, but with a touch of humor and practical application, the author shows the reader in a well organized step by step guide on how they too can be healed and move on to live a healthier and happier life. At the end of each chapter, the author includes a helpful work/study guide for your own personal use.
The steps in the book are easy to follow, easy to understand, and very well written. I especially enjoyed the way Liz Shaw used humor throughout the book.
I highly recommend this handbook for anyone who seriously wants to understand how to overcome difficult circumstances in a healthy and positive way that not only leads to healing, but also to having a closer relationship with God.

Deer of the World Review

Deer of the World
Average Reviews:

This is the only book I found that covered all deer, and it was fascinating (although quite technical in places) and well-referenced. I work at a zoo that has several species of deer. This book gave me a deeper understanding of various species, why they are found where they are found, and the impact humans have had on deer populations. It stimulated my curiousity in other areas, and the references are allowing me to dig more deeply into various topics. I will be referring back to this book often and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in deer, evolutionary strategies, or ecology.

The History Of The Gatling Gun Detachment Fifth Army Corps At Santiago Review

The History Of The Gatling Gun Detachment Fifth Army Corps At Santiago
Average Reviews:

This is a large format reprint of Parker's book. While it has all of the text, it does not include the photos, many of which were taken by a member of his detachment.
Parker was responsible for the way machineguns are used in modern tactics, and this work is critical for an understanding of military history, including the present. The mention of Lt. John T. Thompson, later creator of the Thompson submachinegun, adds to the understanding of firearms development.
Everyone interested in firearms or military history should own this book!

Donkey-Donkey Review

Donkey-Donkey
Average Reviews:

I had a very old, very worn, very loved copy of this book and just recently replaced it with this hard cover copy. The book is just as a remember it as a child. The art work is done in beautiful, soft watercolors. The story is about a donkey who is sad because he compares his ears to all the other animals ears in the barnyard. He takes advice from each of them on how to improve his appearance, much to his dismay. The story has a happy ending and is wonderful for teaching children to appreciate themselves and others just as they are.

Donkey-Donkey thinks that he looks ridiculous with long ears that stick straight up, so he consults his friends on the farm. Each animal has its own idea of beautiful ears—all remarkably like their own. Poor Donkey-donkey becomes sadder and sadder as he tries to follow their advice, with hilarious results. Finally, a little girl visiting the farm admires his long ears and, with new self-esteem, Donkey-donkey keeps his beautiful long ears upright from then on. This charming picture book was first published in 1933 with black-and-white illustrations and then in 1940 with beautiful fullcolor pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations. Knopf is proud to reissue a fascimile of the 1940 edition that sold more than one million copies before it became unavailable about 25 years ago. From the Hardcover edition.

This is a fun quick read that you can share with your kids or grand kids. The stories move along quickly and contain some great factual western history. I was left wanting more and I hope the writer continues. More details and discriptions (the'possible bag') would have been nice.
