(More customer reviews)The Lost Princess of Oz is one of L. Frank Baum's most imaginative books. It begins with a serious problem, Ozma's disappearance, and with many of the favorite characters. Yet in a parallel story, an early chapter takes us to the Winkie Country and introduces us to some delightful new characters, The Frogman and Cayke the Cookie Cook. We know that Cayke's stolen magic dishpan is somehow related to Ozma's disappearance.
I love the role that Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, plays in this book. We meet some whimsical new villages and the beings who inhabit them. We pay attention to small details that are nonetheless important to those most affected by them, such as Toto's missing growl. Illusions are turned upside down and inside out, making us think. It's a delightful journey, all in all, one that I highly recommend.

Tik-Tok of Oz Review

(More customer reviews)Growing up, reading the Oz books, I found "Tik-Tok of Oz" to be one of my favorites. Rediscovering them now, as an adult, I find it still delights me more than most.
The plot, I must admit, is quite reminiscent of "Ozma of Oz" -- a girl and a mortal animal wash up on the shores of some fairyland, encounter the man Tik-Tok and find themselves trapped in a battle with the king of the Nomes. It has been said,in fact, that the plot of this novel came when Baum converted "Ozma" into a stage play, then converted the stage play back into a novel.
However, the book itself is still quite delightful. We don't meet too many really interesting new characters in this book -- not as many as most Oz books, in fact -- but it no longer follows the tired "someone tries to get to the Emerald City and meets interesting creatures along the way" formula that began in the very first book and crippled several books after "Ozma."
Tititi-Hoochoo and Quox the Dragon stand out as the new characters, and it is the sequences featuring them that I find most entertaining. Kaliko and Ruggedo in the Nome Kingdom again draw a grin from me, and the final few pages have a laugh-out loud moment that must have come when someone pointed out an inconsistency in the Oz books that Baum had to suddenly explain away.
"Tik-Tok of Oz" may not be the best of the Oz books, but it's probably the funniest, and it's certainly one of my favorites.

Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, Book 1) (No. 2) Review

(More customer reviews)Okay, I have to admit it. At first I was reluctant to read this book. Actually that's putting it mildly. I did NOT want to read this book what so ever. And that's not because Tamora Pierce is a bad author. (Oh my gosh, NO! She is my favorite.) But her Tortall books had been so good I was afraid I would miss the other characters. (I obviously have some unresolved emotional problems somewhere) Anyway I decided to wait for "First Test" to come out. Then I realized I was too broke(or cheap) to buy it in hardcover and to make a long story short I broke down and bought the first two "Circle of Magic" books in the series. And I loved them. I especially love the characters. The whole story is about these four kids, who are very diverse and unique. They are found by this mage named Niko who brings them together at this really cool place called Winding Circle Temple The four kids don't fit in with the other children so they have to live in a cottage called Discipline which is how they are all brought together to form the "magic circle". Each kid has a special magical talent, (metalcraft, weaving, plants, and weather) and in the end they have to combined their powers to save their lives. Maybe the thing that appealed to me the most was how they all had to live together, (I'm a Real World fanatic, heh heh heh.) but the story is just very very interesting and moving and I really really love it. It's right up there with the Alanna and Daine Quartets, so RELUCTANT TORTALL LOVERS LISTEN TO ME: PLEASE GIVE THIS BOOK A CHANCE-READ A SENTENCE OR TWO JUST FOR ME, YOU'LL LOVE IT

Here I found the easy way to work with Goetian spirits, without need the circle, the triangle and all of this things. Also I found powerful rituals with the elemental spirits and a marvelous safely way for contact with spirits for get help with my spells and rituals.
Carl includes the Star Posture, this is excellent for raising lots of magick power and cast it out to get the things that I want. Really, when I read this book, my magick started to get better and better.
I recommend this book highly to the people who likes and practice the "New Avatar Power" and "Mystic Grimoire of Mighty Spells and Rituals". For me this book of Carl is as good as the other two.

Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders, Book 1) Review

(More customer reviews)I have never read a Robin Hobb book before but I liked the cover art on this one and decided to pick it up and see what it was about. The book jacket made it sound like it would be an adventurous read and it really was.
There are several stories going on in this book: Althea's quest to regain her ship, Kennit's quest to become a king of pirates, Ronica's quest to keep her family together, the serpents' quest for who-knows-what, the mystery of Paragon, the political intrigue surrounding Bingtown and, most compelling of all, Wintrow's story. All of these narratives are interwoven into one big,compelling, un-put-downable, can't-wait-for-the-next-volume, story.
Although it would appear that Althea's is the main story, I found the saga of Wintrow and Wintrow himself the most involving aspect of this book. Ms. Hobb has created in Wintrow a likeable, tortured young man who undergoes a tempering that is wonderful and sometimes painful to watch.
I enjoyed how such unsypat! hetic characters as Kyle and Kennit were not created as simple cardboard villains, instead one is a man who truly thinks he is trying to do right for his family (no matter how obnoxious or wrongheaded he really is) and the other a man who is consumed by ambition and not a little bit of self hate.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to the rest of the series with great anticipation. I also plan to seek out Ms. Hobb's other series of books.
