(More customer reviews)This bilingual book is an enjoyable and relatively easy way to improve your Turkish. "Fourth Company" is narrated by an "honorary sergeant," so-called because he failed his exam to become an officer. The sergeant's anecdotes about life in the military are humorous and thought-provoking. The first chapter deals with his inventive and entertaining way to pave a pothole-filled road by utilizing in an unusual way the resources at hand. Life in the army is very hard - but not without its soft moments, such as when the sergeant arranges for a lovesick soldier to get a few days leave in his village. The sergeant's accounts of dealing with the mule Canavar (Monster) also show humor and compassion. Ilgaz's vocabulary is rich - though full of military terms, of course - and the translation is a valuable teaching aid. The two other stories are also well worth reading.
